we were accused of spending too much time on the practice field by the NCAA. Instead of spending so much time and resources on the investigation you would have thought they could have cleared up the matter by just simply having one of their investigators attend one of our games. It would have been obvious to them that we had not been practicing enough and the matter could have been put to rest.

My theory is that someone close to the program "turned us in" to try to get Polk fired. These allegations occured a few weeks before he retired, and at the time it looked like he would never leave. One of his supporters biggest things was that he "ran a clean program". And, hey, it worked with Jackie. Plus, Polk looked "fireproof" at the time, and I guess he was since he retired.

I do think that it was one of the contributing factors to him retiring. I think he might have thought that the NCAA was going to be out to get him just like Jackie.
