What did you do before you were let go at 55?I ended up out pounding the pavement looking for a job at age 55. Unless you have some special skill set that younger guys don't have (and everybody thinks they do - but probably don't), getting shuffled out in your mid fifties (they CAN find a way to do it) for a younger cheaper person is a real possibility.
I finally decided that a civil service job was my best bet. They cannot discriminate because of age. They post jobs, set up the testing and let the best test-taker beat out the competition. I had to beat out 72 test-takers but I did (humble brag). Got the job, stayed out of trouble and made it to retirement.

Age discrimination at 55? That's not old. Not trying to be a smart ***, just curious the back story. Glad you scored a better job, at any rate.Oil field industrial electrician for a contractor. I disliked my employer so much I didn't protest an easy-to- prove age discrimination case (one foreman even privately admitted it was true and apologized.) Ended up with a better, much easier and less dangerous job.

Interesting thing. As quality if life improves and we live longer and longer, how discriminating can companies get in the future? Milleneals suck, so that leaves us

Just on the internet. There's literally a new video posted everyday, I'm not out seeking them or anything, but if you were you could. Just treated differently. You know, people would be more cold and rude. When you're out a restaurant the servers and people taking your order being dismissive, people giving you weird looks when you speak in another language, not being invited to certain things. You know when you're in a room and there are maybe a group of people talking about you and making fun of you? You can sense it but its all behind your back but not really? Like that. Not all the time, but a good bit of it. It wasn't that big of a deal, but definitely different.
Where the hell are the administrators? Are there no rational adults around to supervise this narcissism?
No problem, Wayne. That night will live with me forever@GhostVol - on my kids I swear that was a coincidence.

That's rude and shouldn't happen, but that's also because plenty of servers have been burned at an alarming rate by not being tipped. So they actually lose money when that happens.

Yeah, I am working civil service at Ft. Sill Oklahoma for the LRC (Logistics Readiness Center) (DOL in the Past) in the transportation division. Was not a lot of call for a cannon cocker (Artilleryman) in the civilian sector. That is actually one good thing the government did way back when, setting up jobs for military personnel after retirement form the military. Worked for a contractor at first at Sill and after 7 years was ask to join the government side and work for the trans division and have been here ever since (12 years in August). Wife still works for the contractor here. I have set a target date of August 2027 for retirement for good. Will be 70 then and daughter Should be out of college if she goes. She is 11 now.
Congrats!
<- - - - Also retired .mil. Spent 9 years thereafter in the tech sector. 8.5 more years for me until retirement, if no additional cuts occur at our agency. If so, then other opportunities are out there.

All I know is when I waited tables, the best tip I ever received was by a black dude. Worst - an Asian chick with a terse note of "terrible service" written down. But that was probably deserved. I was the best waiter on the planet when I had three tables. And I went to the worst when you gave me the 4th.
