Has an AD ever killed athletic atmosphere more than SS?

Can you explain what he did to basketball seating

that caused it to kill the atmosphere? Haven't been to a game in a few years, and was curious as to what the new seating is and why that has affected the atmosphere so much.

The theory is the loyal fans that sat down low for so many years were shunned away for the money draw of tickets and bulldog club points. So now you see empty seats and no energy.

It does look embarrassing on television when the seats that show up the most, the ones behind the two teams benches, are mostly empty. I assume that where the big money people are supposed to be sitting.

I think students should get court side seats on one side to help with the atmosphere. I mean there really isn't a "bad" seat in the lower level even behind the goal.

It was Byrne who split the student section and fired Flick. I don't think you can blame SS for the deterioration of the basketball atmosphere.

Exactly. Don't know why Byrne gets a pass on all the crap he did. Wait, yes I do, he fired croom and hired Mullen.

Plus he replaced Templton. Do you remember the first time you smoked nugs instead of schwag? Sort of the same thing with those two.

There are several things that are working against basketball at te Hump.

The reseating was Byrne's doing correct? So not on Striclklin. That did change the dynamics for the worse in the Hump for sure by raking the avid loyal basketball fans for the money guys that don't give a rats *** about basketball.

The Stan's supporters haven't helped but I think this has gotten much better this season.

I think it was Strickin that did move the students around and that absolutely sucked But he at least listened and moved em back.

We sucked last season and nobody is gonna come watch a team get throttled We are much improved this year and play hard as hell. We just don't have enough talent or players to win too many. We start winning, the Hump will be back. Dear Lord, please let Malik sign with us. Having very good players puts fannies in the seats too. P.S. Wait til next season when our rivals to the North don't have crackhead to bring the fans in. The SP will have a lot more empty seats in it

There's plenty of blame to go around, but I'll say this. The near empty arena tonight shows me that all the people who said that they'd rather watch a losing team that hustles rather than a lazy winning team were full of crap

If we gave our students the lower section completely and put the big money guys right behind them, it'd do two things:

1. It would create a more intimidating home court advantage which would lead to better results

2. The atmosphere would draw in more casual fans (non-students)

We should be doing whatever possible to put our student section as close to the action on all sides as possible. That helps the atmosphere. It's proven to affect referees. There's no downside to it. Any loss of money from big money guys who want great seats would be negated down the road by b-ball games becoming must attend events.

I remember in my first couple of years at State (last 3 of Stans' tenure) the announcers and everyone associated with the department get the fans on their feet with ease. They gave an iPad away at every game and the halftime show was always spectacular.

1. Nevermind we suck, we don't have any good players... If we had just one superstar I think people would show up.
2. I realize it's hard to get sponsors to give away free **** when no one goes to games. Vicious cycle.
3. The fans who were there for the end of the good times ('10 UK game was the highlight of my time at State) are all gone. This team is all the freshmen and sophomores know.

Get one guy who can at least play in Europe and things will fix themselves. We might give up a ton of points but we're fun to watch on D... just need some shooters.

There was one play that stuck out to me tonight and it was by UF and I can't even remember which player it was. The guy came down on the wing, drove down inside, hit a wall 5' from the basket, and in the most flawless motion he turned around and hit a fade-away with complete ease off his right foot. All I could think about was how we don't have a single guy on our bench who could hit that once or make it look as pretty in 100 tries. WE'VE GOT TO GET SOME TALENT. We're going to have a ****** atmosphere until we do.

If Sword could shoot a 15 footer with any consistency he would be Hell. He can get to the rim with the best of em but if you are one dimensional, you can be shut down by good teams.

Agreed. The atmosphere now is bad. The student section is full but not the rest. We don't have the talent to make the game fun to watch. This isn't about past coach v. this coach. It is about players. I went to 2 of our recent games that we WON, and I left almost bored. First games in 2 years attended even though I still bought 4 lower level tickets to support the program. (Use to have calls each week asking me for tickets - NO calls now.) Tonight's game - I cut it off in the middle as it was boring; had other things I needed to do. We don't have elite players to watch. In the recent past, we could watch Dee Bost take over games or Moultrie skying for dunks/rebounds or Ravern hitting numerous 3's (the ones that Fred misses 80% of the time) - we don't have anyone on our team that can score and is fun to watch. (Sword gets close sometimes but can only drive to score.)

Biggest difference is Stans and company aren't around to contribute funds for players, so talent level is down.

Without going into great detail, I will just say I think you have a terrible attitude about all of this. Sorry you are not personally entertained more.

Regardless of who broke it, it's up to Scott to fix it. He can't possibly attend games like last night and not understand how the atmosphere of the Hump -- irrespective of the talent/success of the team -- is nowhere close to what it could be, as supported by history. How we handle basketball moving forward will tell me an awful lot about its priority within our athletic department. Davis Wade is getting what it needs, and Dudy Noble will be getting what it needs. The Hump is ready, and honestly would not take the millions to fix like the other two are taking. Just a matter of deciding on the priorities - winning, turning a buck, stroking egos, building a program....what are they? One thing is for certain, the model since Byrne moved people around is not working.

for Fans, Basketball is for Students.. Football is for alums

You map out quality seats for students and then you seat around that. UF students have premium seats at basketball games

My 2 cents: It really has nothing to do with the Grasshopper at all.

1) Everyone needs to just nut up and go to the games, that will solve 80% of the problem. Instead of watching it on TV and complaining about how sparse the place looks. Stans is gone, the seating has changed(albeit that's been 3 years ago)...and none of that is going to change so get over it and go support.
2) University needs to give up on the gimmick stuff they do during the basketball games(much like they said about the upcoming football season), which would include that overly loud PA system that chick on the court was talking through last night.

I watch every game I can still. I even got excited about going home and seeing us on national TV yesterday, but I get what he is saying. I wasn't even upset when we lost. The person I was watching it with had no knowledge about MSU and as the clock got down to 0 she said something like "Dang, that sucks!" My response was that we were predicted to lose big and that I expected to lose like this. It used to not be that way, and as a guy who grew up watching us knock off teams like UF, Bama, and UK at least every once and a while I was really disappointed with myself on the attitude I showed towards last night's game.

It's not apathy because I still love MSU basketball... I just feel like one of those kids on the playground who wants to be friends with the bullies who beat me up every single day.

Last night was a perfect example of what we might have if we had one or two go to guys. The team played hard and pretty good on defense. Early in the game we actually had a couple of chances to expand a lead but we really had no one to go to. All we needed was one guy to feed and we didn't have that. You could see it in the players that no one really wanted to step up and try to take that role either. The closest one we have is Sword and I think he spent most of the first half on the bench with fouls.

It doesn't make me apathetic or bored or eve pissed anymore. I will, as you, continue to watch to see if we can steal a few more games and maybe get in the NIT this season, but I am not going to expect us to be any kind of solid contender till we get a little more talent.

I give Ray credit for establishing a hard work ethic in this team on the floor. Hopefully he can either bring in some of the spice we need to add to the mix or he can coach up a few guys to help in that area.

Reminds me of watching the football games during Croom's tenure. You lose the ability to delude yourself into thinking we have a chance.

Even at halftime last night, I was wondering how long we could stay within a few points, nevermind winning.

Apparently those who made this vow were a very vocal minority.

For the record, I'd much rather be complaining about inconsistency from a talented team with relevant wins (that can fill up the gym) than a scrappy but hopelessly out-manned squad of (no offense) no-names who are highly unlikely to beat anybody of any consequence.

I will give Ray some credit. He has his team playing hard. Not yet playing smart, nor playing well, but hard. I think he still has a ways to go to even reach the level Stans was with his last team and thus the jury is still out in my book as to whether or not making the change was the right move. Stay tuned sports fans.

Stan's , last team would beat our current team by 20. They would drag-*** around, maybe get in a fight but rebound, make 3s and dunk the 17 out of the roundball. We don't have anyone that could stop Dee.

How did that last team of Stansbury become the prototypical Stansbury team? Stansbury's teams were routinely at or near the top of the SEC in field goal percentage defense and all rebounding statistics. We were in the top ten in the country in those stats several times.

I've talked to former college basketball players (not for MSU) who told me that they thought Stans's teams played a plodding motion offense, but played great fundamental defense. I've always thought that Stans hurt himself by getting away from that blueprint trying to build a more skillful team that could advance farther in the NCAA's.
