Has the Offensive Line Been the Problem?

Just finished putting this together really quick... Some interesting numbers and stats that might make you question what you thought you saw the past two years to an extent. It did for me. Sorry in advance for formatting and concision issues -- those aspects are certainly not strengths of mine(as most here already know, I'm sure).

I don't think there is any doubt Hevesy knows what he is doing as a coach. He

makes guys better and he understands how to win with what he has got. I think the big gripe is we can't seem to be able to land big time OL recruits which would make his job much easier, maybe*.

Not to immediately piss in your cheerios.... But, QB Hurries/Pressures is a better stat to look at for a real take on the quality of our Offensive Line.

I remember a TON of times where Russell and Dak both got nailed as they were releasing the ball.

If you can find opposing QB hurries numbers for the west -- I'll be happy to edit it in. It's not an easily available stat...
And I don't really see how it is likely to be very different from sacks in a statistically relevant way... #sacks should be ~ proportional to #hurries/hits taken one would think

On the flip side, there were several times that TR held onto the ball for 18 seconds and took a sack. Our line is better than we give it credit for. More times than not, when our offense wasn't clicking, it wasn't the lines fault.

That's basically the conclusion I came up with. It's what I already thought, but as I got pretty far into the stats, it became pretty glaring really. The biggest complaint about push, which I thought I agreed with, seems to be largely negated by how effective Robinson has been running the ball against the same good defenses that we had trouble with Perkins...

Oh, I am not picking it apart in that regard or saying that your point isn't somewhat valid. But, being an OL myself, I watch the position more closely than most people do. Our OL has not been very talented OR very well coached. We have to have some major improvement in that area.

Perkins vs Robinson

When Perkins did not have a clear path, he danced sideways. (not gonna work against better teams)
Robinson moves on, twisting and turning.

The correlation with the passing stats is probably attributed to the patterns called. Most of the other SEC QBs were completing around 7-10% more passes and a few more yards a completion.

The rushing stats were better for Robinson because he often relieved Perkins in the drive. Plus, he ran between the tackles and took advantage of his all-american left guard.

However, my eyeballs told me that that State did not control the line of scrimmage. State was 74th in 3rd down conversion % @ 39.2%, but they ranked 29th in total 1st downs gained (equal b/t passing and rushing).

THIS is going to make a very large difference this year. I very much believe this.
