I've waited a few days to ask this, so maybe we can get clearer pictures as to why State and Ole Miss fans "hate" each other. It has to go beyond a football contest for an ugly trophy.
I go to 2-3 home games at both schools each year, and there really is no difference in the 2 experiences.
I'm not starting a "why can't we all get along" thread. We've all heard the stories of Bama/Auburn fans who refused to do business with each other, and the Florida State Santa who told the little boy that he would get nothing for Christmas because he had on a Gator shirt is priceless. So I'd like to hear real reasons for hating each other. I know the stories are out there</p>

I don't dislike Ole Miss fans. When I dislike them it's for the same reason I would hate a State Fan or anyone else. Now if you are talking Alabama I do hate some of them for being a Alabama Fan. 17 them!

threw a whiskey bottle at my Mom at the 98 Egg Bowl in Oxford, and then when she got upset about it a 75 + year old man told her to 17 off. Before that they were just the rival. After that is when i really just couldn't stand them anymore.

Ive never heard this before. That is an extremely disturbed Florida State fan if true.

we embarrass them in every way. we are the people that they hide from in social gatherings when they are away from the south. we wear camo, have pot bellies, say y'all, lack sophistication, love pork loin, and in general we are dumber than them.

they are the old south chivalry and we are the old south share cropper. they just don't sport their camo to the grocery store and this definitely makes them better than the rest of us.

it is no surprise that the true white collar degrees of medicine and law are found in Oxford. it doesn't matter that we have engineers, PhDs, vets, architects, scientists, etc. graduating each semester from our poor little school in our poor podunk little town. they are still better than us.

ETA: The parallels between then and now are amazing. I know it has been mentioned on here before, but Brewer-Sherrill and Nutt-Mullen are very similar.

...aristocracy vs. common people. They tried to put the land-grant college in Oxford adjacent to Ole Miss when they first opened it. They apparently had it ready to go and nobody showed up on the first day because the common people weren't going to go to school with the aristocrats. I think some of that still remains, though there are plenty of people at State in bowties at football games that look like they belong at Ole Miss. Likewise, Ole Miss has its share of hayseeds. By and large they are the same now, but old stereotypes die hard. My grandfather would immediately start in about how important agriculture is to the world when the OM-State debate came up, but people of my generation don't make the connection anymore.

But by and large, there is a class issue, which some rivalries don't have.

I don't hate MSU or its fans. Or LSU or its fans.

You can find one person, EVEN at Vandy, that will get drunk and be a horrible human being, and spit on your daughter and punch your grandmother and throw whiskey bottles at your unborn children.

You cheer for one school, you cheer against their rivals. It's not much more than that.

The student section was on the east side and they didn't have the expansion. When you walked out of the visitor seats and thru the portal the students were above you looking down. They thru eggs cigars and whiskey on my father, mother, uncle, and myself.

I can't stand those obnoxious mother 17ers. I don't dislike individuals who go there, but as a whole they are the biggest bunch of overly obnoxious 17 wads to ever step foot on earth. And the worst 17ing thing about it is they really do think they are better.

I go to a non MSU game in Oxford every so often and try and sit among the students. The way they act to every other team that comes in that stadium is repulsive. I'd rather go to Death Valley any day and sit amongst corndogs. At least its a 17ing experience.

Ole Miss........17 off.

We as humans look to form communites with those like us. Part of forming that community is having a common rival. It is a story as old as human history.

Oh, and 17 off mississippi.

I hate losing to you guys because I have to hear about it from them. But I dont hate yall.

I wanted to beat everybody, including Ole Miss. They were all the same to me.

Until 1983.

Sitting among the Rebels with my "good" Rebel uncle and cousins, I was wearing a MSU shirt. After that game, while walking down the steps thru the Rebels folks, a middle aged man in a blue blazer with a reddish face, salt and pepper hair, and scar above his eye, jumps in front of me and waves a Rebel flag in my face. He cussed me and taunted me. My "Good" Rebel uncle and my older cousin, a freshman at Ole Miss at that time, get in the guys face and tell him to 17 off or get his *** whipped. My aunt grabs me and my cousin of the same age, and pulls us away. The dudes wife then starts cussing my uncle and cousin, along with half the folks around them. I was 13 years old. I can still see that guy perfectly. I've looked for him every year since.

Whoever he is, he still has an *** whupping coming. Or he finally gets to whup my ***. But we are gonna find out.

At Christmas that same year, my "Bad" rebel uncle on the other side of the family,, when he hears the story, at first laughs then accuses me of making it up.

My hate dates from walking down those steps in 83.

What makes this year and years like it so sweet, is knowing that my 17tard "Bad" rebel uncle's and his ilk's Christmas is now ruined.

17 those people. Damn right I hate them.

Hate of course is a strong word. It should be reserved for people like Nazi's and the like.

I do have some issues with Ole Miss.

First of all, it's the "we're better than you" attitude even though it's not very well substantiated, and it mainly centers around football for them. Does anyone really think that they would act like a football superpower around a Texas fan? A Florida fan? Need I go on. We have a BAD football history at MSU, and basically they live their facade of being a football power through us to an extent. The reality is, when you look at the head to head record in the series, they are one great coach better than us. As I pointed out a week ago, if you take out the Vaught era, we are essentially tied in the all-time series. And you notice how pissy some of them got when I pointed that out. That's the difference- they had one really good coach and we had Charley <17> Shira.

And you will notice that come basketball season and baseball season, instead of using the "we're better than you, look at the record book attitude" because they can't, they use the "we suck because we don't care" attitude. Of course, that all changes if they actually become good. Now, no it's not unusual for people to go see the team once it starts to have success, but it does look a little hollow when those people who "don't care" all of a sudden are hardcore fans, and then once the team collapses, it's back to not caring in the first place.

But of all the things that piss me off about them, because I can put up with being stuck up or whatever, is their reaction to what happens when MSU gets good at football. Our reaction if we suck is to fire the coach and hire a better one. See Croom and Dan Mullen. That's what normal people do. What Ole Miss did was instead of making changes within their program, they decide to try to shut ours down. Essentially, if you're going to beat us, we're taking our toys and going home attitude. Ask USM about that with Ole Miss. Anyway, instead of hiring a better coaching staff, Ole Miss decides to launch a full scale NCAA investigation. That's nuts. They were trying to give MSU the freaking death penalty. I mean, ****. Even Bama didn't try to do that to Auburn when the Plainsmen ran off six wins against them. That should tell you something right there. Who else does that? And while they're accusing MSU of doing all of this illegal stuff, they're doing just as much and probably more illegal stuff. It's too bad we had an AD who was a *****.

So, now Bruiser to the rescue.

Just the half that wears pink pants, a tie, and a blazer to the football games. I hate the OM fans who in August thought they had a legitimate chance to win the West this year and fight Florida for a National Championship. I hate the OM fans who, after we spanked them in the egg bowl, politely congratulated us and then proceeded to talk about how they have never seen their team play that bad and if they would have played that bad all year they would "have the same record as we do."

I have a lot of good friends that are OM fans who are great people and we can talk about football all day without pissing each other off...I also have other "friends" in which I have described above.

Growing up in the 70's, and Mississippi coming off their heyday of the 50's and 60's, my dad's friends that were Mississippi fans were hell to be around. Three instances thru the years have kept it going for me:

1. My Dad's idiot friend staying on me constantly at a party right after they beat us. I was 8 and he was hammered drunk. Kept on and on. I ended up kicking the hell out of him in the shin with my boot. That shut him up and made the whole party laugh

2. 1981- John Fourcade holding the ball up at us in the newly enclosed end zone in Jackson. Dick Pace with the worst pass intereference call in the history of football. He just flat out cheated.

3. Mississippi fan jumping up in my face out of nowhere as i'm leaving the stadium- he was 6 inches from my face and said- "we just @%%+%% ya'll up"...I dropped him by hitting him right in the jaw with my cowbell. Be glad your team won, but dont get in my face about it- I dont do that to them when we win.

Their elitist attitude has always bothered me. Always will.

Ive always been reasonably tolerant of the Hell I have caught from @#*@ fans, bammers, mustard buzzards and the like, but this past week i have been absolutely blown away by the intolerance of @#!^% fans. First off, the dudes at our tailgate came over, ate our food, drank our beer, dogged our season, re-emphasized their lsu victory and talked about going to a better bowl. Before we headed to the stadium, I explained to them that we had all been perfectly willing to listen to their pontification at OUR tailgate, and that we all felt like we had a chance, but they would probably win and we would be there after the game no matter what, BUT should we win, we would expect them to be back for the post game celebration, they never showed, ********!

JWS' last game, I sat in sec 708, 10 rows from the top, eli handed our asses to us, on top of that I sat through a driving rain storm, then a 25mph north wind, not another bulldog fan in site, with a cousin of a friend. He started giving me hell within 10 minutes of being introduced, and it only got worse as the night went on. about the middle of the 3rd quarter this old rebel dude came down from somewhere above me, sat down and asked "When are you crazy *** puppy fans gonna give up?" I said "when You stupid rebel fans stop being ********!" I sat there in that seat, soaking wet and freezing my *** off til the final horn. May sound stupid to most of you, but I was not gonna give them sombitches the satisfaction of my leaving.
BTW, that cousin of my friend was packed up and gone within 1 hr of final last weekend. I told him I was expecting to visit after we kicked their ***, he asked me "What bowl game are yall going to?"</p>

My husband (fiance at the time) and I were walking back to the car after getting our butts kicked and our fill of "Olle Miss by damn". It was going to be a long drive home (isn't it always when we lose?). We were walking about 30 feet behind an elderly Bulldog couple. The gentleman had a cowbell, but was walking with it by his side, upside down, holding the clanger...y'all know the drill. There was a group of about 8 to 10 rebel frat boys coming up behind us and they were feeling no pain. I automatically get nervous, because my fiance is in no mood to listen to anything these guys might say and I am in no mood for a night in the ER or trying to figure out how to bail him out of jail. They must have sensed this and walked around us without saying a word...until they got behind the elderly couple. They got loud and started trash talking. Fiance looks at me and says, "If they say one more word, you know I am..." Before he could finish, one of the boys says to the gentleman "why aren't you ringing that damn bell now?" As I am grabbing for my fiance's arm as he rushes forward, the white haired gentleman turns around, cowbell held high and says, "Which one of you sons of bitches is gonna wear this damn bell home?"

None of them volunteered, and with heads down walked away. The gentleman thanked my hot headed future husband for the back up, but assured him he had the situation under control. His wife looked at me with a gleem in her eyes and said, "See why I love him?"

Yes ma'am, I do.

...Plantation, antebellum image, SOMETHING happens that drags them right back down. They get a Presidential debate, they erect a statue of James Meredith, and everyone thinks "well, OM finally gets it, it's moving forward"....then, POW!, someone with a cell phone and a snootful of Chivas gets loose in the Grove and starts flinging "N-bombs". This is followed by the Klan rally hundreds passively watched and just let happen.

I have nothing against Rebel fans and alum personally. There are some great people I know who are Rebel fans. As a matter of fact, the ones I knew growing up had me leaning to be an OM fan (wasn't a college sports fan at the time). However, after getting around some OM students and fans while I was a student at Millsaps really opened my eyes to them. I remember thinking they were a bunch of self-absorbed jackasses. The State students weren't as pretentious.

I was born in Starkville and spent most of my childhood on or around the MSU campus. Some of my earliest memories are playing ball in the Left Field Lounge with my buddies while my folks watched the baseball games. I spent countless hours riding my bike around campus and damn near broke my neck trying to ride down that steep hill behind the post office when I was 13. For the longest time OM fans were just a bunch of ******** that came to town once in a while whenever OM played State in sports, but I didn't think much of it cause I was just a kid and had other things to worry about.

Then, when I was in high school and college and old enough to know better, I really started to take offense to those OM fans that would come to town and talk **** about State. I have no problem with OM fans that are proud of their university and true fans of their sports teams. I would expect nothing less. But the pretentious OM fan that wants to trash State and make fun of us, calling us "cow college, State Tech, etc." and talking about how much better OM is in anything... you can go 17 yourself. For me, it's not just trashing my university, it's like they're trashing my childhood and my whole upbringing. Nothing makes me happier than for OM fans to come to town and talk trash, only to leave with their tails tucked between their legs after a loss. Here's to hoping that it happens a lot more in the future.
