Hattiesburg mayor is about to catch some serious hell from restaurant owners. He has decided to defy the governors decision to open some reduced dinning in Hattiesburg. Basically they can continue to do curbside pickup only. Will Starkville mayor follow suit?

I don't know how Jackson restaurateurs are not up in arms already.

Restaurants in the suburbs are opening back up, while Chokwe is keeping any owners lucky enough to be located within the city limits of Jacktown on lockdown.

At least one Jackson restaurant solved the problem by just closing down for good. Just got a lot easier to boycott Outback for North Jackson and Madison County.

Toby is a liberal, so not surprising. He fired city employees too due to less tax revenue. He's more concerned with the beautification of downtown and building of parks than the real job of mayor.

That's surprising. Toby is pretty sharp and would have been somebody with a shot at moving to a state level position. I wonder if the restaurants were on board with this b/c limited capacity doesn't help them. OF course he already was in a good position to move to a state level position as a member of the legislature, so he may have no interest in anything beyond Hattiesburg.

He is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Toby is out for Toby, and an over-reaching government bureaucrat. I can say that from experience. Remember that when he runs for a higher office.

I've heard that most restaurant owners are opposed to the quarter capacity deal

Puts them in a spot where they can't remain closed and stay alive through insurance/gov't assistance, and 1/4 is so low they are guaranteed to lose money by opening. Puts their staff in the same spot, can no longer collect unemployment, but won't actually be making decent money at work with extremely low tips and limited hours.

That’s hard for me to believe. Alcohol sales would go up substantially and those are some of the most profitable items sold in a restaurant. Kitchen and or waiters would not need to change much at all from what they are using for curbside pickup.

Quarter capacity is a death sentence. Imagine being told you can only make 1/4 of your revenue. No business can work at that margin.

Is 25% not better than the 10% (curbside) they are currently at?

so would you rather have 10% of what you normally make, or 35%?

I dont think he is defying the order.

Well he has put rules in place for Hattiesburg that are more strict than what the Governor directed for the state. So whatever you call that? Seems
like he’s contradicting the governors directive to me.

I know one prominent restaurant owner that was preparing to open and now the city has shut it down.

Mayors have always had the authority to exceed the state's restrictions. Contradicting the Governor's orders would be if he went the other way and tried to remove all limits on restaurants.

Nah, he's definitely ambitious beyond Hattiesburg. He's only in his mid-30s. He isn't helping himself on this one though. There are some pissed off Hattiesburg-ers right now.

It doesn't work like that. The cost to "turn the key" in the morning is relatively fixed. Most places only manage a profit if they are running at a specific efficiency with a specific amount of output.

Barker is worlds better than what Hattiesburg used to have but he seems like someone who would send his wife out to kill a snake or stomp a spider.

So for those restaurants doing curbside (most of them), is that key not already turned in the morning? I saw my curbside pickup gal walk out of the same exact door I normally walk into at Olive Garden last Saturday afternoon.

There are some things you have to do for dine in that you don't have to do for curbside. You don't have to clean the entire building. You don't have to clean the patron bathrooms (or clean as much if the workers use the same bathrooms). There may be some places with different HVAC systems for the kitchen and dining areas. Then there are the extra costs around sanitation and masks that maybe aren't required for curbside. I would think on the whole they'd do better with dine in at 25% or 50% capacity than just curbside, but if they are doing a good enough curbside, they may be concerned they will convert their business from more profitable curbside to less profitable dine-in. I've seen a few restaurants announce that they are going to continue with curbside only for now.
