have our football recruiting efforts been solid the last few weeks?

I haven't checked in a while... when did Rivers become a "high interest" recruit ? Maiden? any other big timers we've made progress on lately?

1) I realized our recruiting will heavily be influenced by our win total this year. Kids want to play for Mullen - we just have to give them a reason. He's recruiting pretty well even to a losing (at present) program. So it doesn't matter until then.
2) Doesn't matter what the recruitniks say - the classes will look like you expect considering the program's trend, come signing day.
3) Players are never as good or bad as they seem.
4) Croom's 2* wonders whipped the **** out of Orgeron's 4* horses. So who was actually recruiting better? We were probably almost as good as Ole Miss last year, given the difference in schedules.
5) We Are Mississippi State, and I know what happens to high school All-Americans once they come to Starkville.

I've known all this for awhile, but always just enjoyed recruiting. Just got better things to do nowadays I guess.

This time of year, it's pretty much set. Unless we have a disaster of a season, we will have a decent class made up of some pretty decent players. What Mullen has been able to do successfully so far is find real diamonds in the rough that play on the lines and in the defensive backfield. He needs to round it out with a QB and some solid WR's and LB's. We have a chance to do that.

The QB situation is as much a mystery to everyone this year as it was last year. From the outside, and even the kind-of inside, it looks like Mullen is locked in on Rivers, but it does not appear to be reciprocated. There are some guys coming to the Big Dawg Camp, but I think Mullen has made it clear who he wants. Hall was the backup, but he had a weak showing at camp, and we let Miller go for some reason. This year is not a make or break year at QB, but we sure could use some talent coming in and developing. This year's on the field performance is crutial to recruiting a great QB for next year.

Other people are going to self destruct when they see Mississippi get the big name WR's like Singleton, Moncrief, and Brassell. I don't think they end up with 5 of the top 5, but they will end up with at least two of the four stars, plus some other talent. We have a good shot at Joe Morrow and several other lower rated guys, but nobody that is going to blow you away. Having a guy like Singleton in state and not signing him is going suck, but it's not crippling as we already have Bumphis and Heavens at his position. Morrow really fits our need, so he is a must have.

If the staff feels Rivers is a lost cause they will turn to Prescott pretty quickly as the backup and give him an offer. Supposedly he did really well at both the LSU & State camps.

With that said, I think people are underrating how much in the running we are with Rivers. We are in his top few schools with Fla State, UCLA, and NC State. Florida State may be out of the running as they already picked up a highly touted QB.

His family has concerns Mullen will not be there long-term.

A coach staying at the same school for six years is a long time these days. And another thing that recruits will never realize is that the big successful schools sign a 4 or 5 star at your position every year and you are going to have to get in line. </p>
