Have six inches ever meant so much to a football team?

The LSU game Mullen's first year here still haunts me sometimes.<div>
</div><div>If only Dixon would have scored when he dove towards the endzone. If only Tyson would have pitched it to Dixon. If only the pass to a wide open green had had one inch more of loft on it.</div><div>
</div><div>But looking back, if we would have won that game, MSU would have been #2 in the SEC West instead of tied for fourth and ended up sixth by tie breaker.</div><div>
</div><div>
</div><div>
</div><div>If we would have won, there would have been a three way tie for 2nd place between us, LSU, and UM. And with victories over both we would have been #2 in the West with a 6-6 record (as crazy as that sounds).</div><div>
</div><div>With a bowl game in Dan's first year I can only imagine how many steps further along we might be as a program.</div><div>
</div><div>But, you can't look back. But it helps to realize that ever game, every series, every play could shape the program.</div>

It shouldn't have mattered as the pitch should have been made to score untouched on 4th down. But Dixon did score on 2nd down.
Add to it if Ralph had reached out when torpedoed at Auburn this year. Then we are looking at the Gator or Peach Bowl this year. I'm just glad we punked the Bears.

Also, suppose Boobie doesn't fumble down near the goal line vs. GT?

We could have been an 8 win team with wins over LSU, GT and Houston. Still, I normally don't like to look back at things this way though, because you can usually look at the flip side and find a close play or two that went our way to balance things out. For instance, suppose Titus Brown hits John Parker Wilson just a split second later vs. Bama in '07 on the Anthony Johnson pick 6....the ball probably doesn't float and AJ doesn't take it to the house and we probably don't win that game. If we don't win that game, and eke one out in the Egg Bowl, we don't go bowling in '07.

but what if we go for two and fail or miss the XP? I know Mullen has said several times that we were "one play from beating Auburn and USC" and I know he mentioned after the Auburn game that he would have went for two had Relf scored. But there was definitely no certainty that we would have punched it in and gotten the 2 points there.

We were not very close at all to beating GT. Had we not turned it over several times, maybe.

that Auburn got. They scored 7 on that drive which forced us to try and score 7 at the end just to tie. If that call is properly made, we're kicking a FG from less than extra point distance at the end to win.
