MHSAA suspends players involved in fight

The Clarion-Ledger

Two high school soccer players ejected for fighting during last
Saturday’s MHSAA Class 6A championship game between Gulfport and
Northwest Rankin were given more penalties today by the MHSAA.

Zach Windom, a senior for Gulfport, has been banned from participating
in any other MHSAA-sanctioned events this school year, according to a
news release from the MHSAA office. Windom might face further penalties
from the Gulfport school board, said the release.

Arlington Shirley, a junior for Northwest Rankin, faces a two-game
suspension from MHSAA events. Both players must also complete the Star
Sportsmanship program presented by the MHSAA office.

Gulfport won the championship game, played in Clinton, 1-0.

The fight started in the closing minutes, shortly after Gulfport had
scored. Windom threw Shirley to the ground after the two players battled
for possession of the ball. Video shows Windom punching Shirley several
times before players from both teams pulled the two apart.

Drew Barry of Northwest Rankin was also ejected from the game.

I think perhaps there was a lady there, possibly a smoker, who desired #28 to be ejected from the match.

Also, anybody else see that the Hinds sheriff office told his dad that he couldn't file charges for assault because it was just part of a soccer game. What's up with that? What if he'd pulled a knife and stabbed him? Would he be able to press charges then?

or something. The reason the other guy got "in trouble" is because the stripes for soccer are a bunch of pussies. They just card and throw out everybody. That said, this is pretty common for high school soccer. We got in 3 or 4 brawls with different schools over my high school days. One even moved to the McDonalds after the game. These werent just 2 people going at it...im talking about full out brawls with multiple "skirmishes" all over the field. Nobody ever gets arrested just like nobody ever gets arrested in baseball, football, hockey etc...

Extreme cases im sure they could and would get involved like the hockey player that put that guy in a coma or something with his stick and a kid that charged the mound with a bat and i believed killed the pitcher.

If they just start arresting folks for these "skirmishes" they will have to do it any and every single time.

If Im a ref there, and I see someone pointing a video camera at what happened, Im going to ask to see it so I can make sure I do the right thing.

Way back in High School, during a game against Long Beach, our football team got into a fight on the Long Beach sideline (Not Smart), and one of our more wired players while leaving the LB sideline, just knocked out cold one of the long beach coaches. They arrested him the next day, so Im sure the kid from Gulfport isn't out of the woods.

It really makes no sense since Gulfport was winning. Why in the world would you pick a fight with less than 4 minutes left in a game where you have a chance to win a state title?

I used to play organized ice hockey. Yep, ice hockey - the one sport where fighting is practically encouraged. The league had a rule that any fighting instigator, chosen by the referee, would be kicked out of the league. One offense and you are out.

Playing ice hockey is expensive. Roughly $1,000 for equipment and hundreds in fees for each season. Plus all of us enjoyed the hell out of playing hockey. So everybody was scared to throw a punch or shove the opponent away from the puck.

Result: I never saw or heard about any fighting in that league.

Isn't it his job to control these kids and break things like this up? Dude ran away when the fight started.

He would have been dealt with accordingly. Either that or one of his teammates would have been dealt with in his honor.

i think that is what they are "supposed" to do in soccer. I believe, if i remember correctly, that they are told to not break it up and to leave it to the other players and coaches.

I'll have to ask my friend/former coach what the exact ruling is on that, but I'm pretty sure that's what I've read. I think it's 17'ing stupid. And that ref did jump away like a little *****. I would have said screw the rules andpulled the Gulfportguy off the NWR guy.

We need to sign him up as a tight end. He is a beast. **I know it doesn't require much to be a BEAST in soccer.**

Just Sayin!

ETA: After watching the full video, apparently they let the players come back out and a second fight eerily similar to the first fight breaks back out between the same players at almost the exact same spot on the field. Scary!

That must be a new rule....one guy started swinging in one of our games and the Ref laid one of the hardest spears I've seen in a while!!!.......It was pretty intense!
Needless to say all benches cleared and about 5 of our players got red cards. The other team forfeited the game right then in the 2nd half, got on the bus and left!

Got red carded because he started shouting profanity after the kid beathim down. I have been told that profanity from any player under any circumstance is grounds for a red card. Not sure that is accurate but that's what I have been told.I think after I had gotten the red card for cussing the guy like a dog, I would have then kicked his nuts up to his Adam's apple. The aggressor deserved it.
