Saw it and it only strengthened my beliefs that he was either a.) assisted in suicide or b.) murdered. There are too many red flags, the least of which is that the investigating officer was a friend of Love's as well as the coroner in the case.
The level of heroin in Cobain's system was far too high for him to have even been coherent enough to pull the trigger, let alone load the shotgun with multiple shells(?), position it, etc. Not to mention that his supposed "suicide note" is erratic and written in two different styles. Plus the expelled shell casing was on the wrong side of the shotgun. There were no fingerprints found on the gun (not even the trigger?), the drug paraphernalia, or even the pen used to write the note?? Odd hmmm....
Something else the documentary doesn't really cover is the story of El Duce, an L.A. musician who claims Love tried to hire him to kill Cobain for $50,000 months before Kurt died. He came out with the info after Kurts death, did an interview for the 1998 documentary "Kurt & Courtney" and reaffirmed his claims then was mysteriously found dead shortly after in a train yard after having been hit by a train on his way to "get some beers with a friend". This "friend", according to eyewitnesses who saw El Duce shortly before he died, was someone none of them had ever seen before and vanished after El Duces death never to be seen by any of them again? A little odd don't you think?
My theory is this: Love knew Kurt wanted a divorce, he was very vocal about it and made no attempts to keep it secret. They had a pre-nup before they got married which would have left Courtney with nothing. She had gotten used to a lifestyle of excess in regards to her drug abuse and the thought of having to give all of that up because of lack of money was devastating to her, so she planned on killing Kurt to ensure she got everything and could maintain her lifestyle. First she tried to hire someone to kill him which went south (El Duce), when that didn't pan out, her next step was to try and kill him herself, so while they were in Rome, she loaded his champagne with rohypnol in an attempt to kill him and make it look like a suicide. She conveniently did not report his "overdose" until the next morning around 5:30 am or so. To her dismay, his stomach was pumped and he was awake a few hours later, so she planned on having it done right the third time. She was running out of time and couldn't risk another suicide attempt by OD, because Kurts tolerance was so high so she knew it had to be by some other means - gunshot. This brought her back to her original plan. She called the place where El Duce worked claiming she needed him for some work they had arranged and found out he was on tour with his band. She reportedly went ballistic on the phone over this and hung up.
She had to do it another way, so she convinced his junkie friend Dylan (probably with some heroin) to talk Kurt into buying a shotgun for "home protection" because they had recently had a break in at their house. Although Kurt wasn't really interested in getting a gun, he went along with Dylan who purchased the gun and shells and gave them to Kurt. This set up the suicide weapon. The plan was in motion and after a planned intervention to "get Kurt some help", an intervention planned by Love who, ironically, was a bigger junkie than Kurt was, Kurt agreed to go to detox. This set up the "he's depressed and suicidal" backstory (the doctors and nurses who attended to him at the center said he was anything but btw). Then he escapes the detox center, probably after one of Love's several desperate calls she made to Kurt while in there. Kurt returns home where Love's live-in ex-boyfriend/nanny Cali gives Kurt heroin and after he has passed out, injects him with a near lethal dose to keep him sedated, moves him to the greenhouse and shoots him (as instructed by Love), setting up the scene but making many mistakes along the way. He calls Courtney to tell her the deed is done (4/2/94) - coroner estimated Cobain to have died on 4-5-94, but this is the same coroner who is friends with Love and left the Seattle coroners office shortly after the investigation was over. Love hires investigator Tom Grant on 4-3-94 (to establish an alibi) while she is in L.A. for "business" that her lawyer has no idea about. She instructs him to look everywhere BUT their house (she needs the body to sit for a while to make it tough to determine time of death - something she probably learned from her coroner friend). She is very adamant that he NOT look at the house. Eventually, he does so anyways with Dylan Carlson in tow who fails to inform Grant of the greenhouse above the garage where he and Kurt had spent a lot of time shooting up in the past. Whether this was by design or just because Dylan was so out of it he couldn't remember is up for debate. They go into the house and into the Cobain bedroom and see nothing, particularly on the bed, where Love later says she found the suicide note (this is 4-7-94 btw , two days after the coroner claims Kurt had died and a day before his body was discovered so if the suicide note was really left there, where was it?). After sufficient time has passed, Love hires an electrician to check the homes security system for no reason whatsoever. The electrician arrives and immediately goes to the greenhouse and discovers Cobain's body. Why he went to the greenhouse first is still something of a mystery. The electrician claims its just where he went first, but that seems awful convenient. He sees Kurt and thinks he's sleeping, but then notices the shotgun and calls 911. The door to the greenhouse is locked from the inside, but it is a simple turn lock that could be turned and locked and pulled shut from the outside. The shotgun is laying across Kurts chest with his hand gripping the barrel. The shotgun was fired upside down with the trigger guard facing away from Kurt's body. The eject port for the shell was on the right, but the shell was found on the left side of Kurts body. Nothing in the room looked right, but the police investigators immediately ruled it a suicide and didnt even develop all of the pictures taken that day. The gun did not have Kurts fingerprints nor did the box of drug paraphernalia next to him. So, he managed to wipe everything down before he shot himself? Not likely. Not to mention that had he injected himself with that lethal a dose of heroin, he would've had a syringe hanging out of his arm and the tourniquet likely still on (see the death of Seymour Phillip Hoffman for evidence of this), but neither were present. No one ever mentions the fact that Kurt had many times the lethal dose of heroin in his body and would've likely died anyway. Why would someone shoot themselves up with more heroin than they've ever attempted and then decide to shoot themselves??? It doesn't make sense. There are too many things pointing away from suicide here, but because of a poor investigation led by a detective who was a friend of Loves, and an almost immediate cremation of Kurts body. The truth will never likely be known.
