Protect your pop pop and your big momma.

I haven't yet. Was in store Friday and I was one of the few without.

Some dude walked by and he was about 10 ft away when he sneezed into his mask. This will probably be one of my last posts. He was going north as I was going south, so maybe that'll help.

No. The virus is not a big problem in my town. Last time I was out 2 weeks ago, nobody was wearing a mask including the grocery store clerks. I'm not that worried about it.

Going out today and will see if that has changed. I doubt it has since our number of cases hasn't. Still just 5 cases in our county.

I can guarantee you there are more than 5 cases in your county. Many people have it, don't know it, and give it to other people. This is why you should be wearing masks.

Yes. Went to Kroger Friday and I would say 40% had a mask on. I think more would wear them if they had them. My mom works in a nursing home and mailed us 2 or we wouldn’t have any.

They don’t even wear em at CFA. My figuring says if CFA ain’t doing something, it ain’t worth doing. WWCFAD?
[laughing]

At our nearest, local CFA, all outdoor employees (directing traffic, taking orders) wear masks. Some indoor workers also wear masks.
----------------------------------------

I was initially cool to the idea of wearing a mask again. After all, during my time in the service, we sometimes spent days donned in M17 and M25 protective masks. Damn things are hot and uncomfortable. I still own a few M17s, but am reluctant about wearing one for fear of getting arrested or my *** kicked.

Then my manager's parents became COVID-19 infected, ill and, thankfully, mostly recovered after returning from a trip to Israel in early March. The father still experiences issues stemming from the illness.

Then my co-worker's mother died from COVID-19 on April 9th, this past Thursday evening. She had been hospitalized for respiratory problems beginning March 31.

By this past Friday afternoon, I began wearing disposable surgical masks to the grocery store and restaurant drive-thru. Roughly 85% of the customers at the grocery store I visited Friday afternoon wore masks.

Prices on these "procedural face masks" increased 9-fold since this pandemic started. Last year, my wife, who suffers from allergies, purchased 2 boxes of 50-each from CVS for $12 total. Currently, 50-count boxes sell for $45-50 on some websites. CVS, Walgreens and everybody else sold out. We have 62 remaining. So, I researched alternatives.

N95 is the gold standard for consumer-grade masks. Good luck finding any. Surgical masks filter much more particle matter than cotton masks, especially homemade, but fit seems a major issue with the surgical style. It's possible to slightly improve a cotton mask (cost $4-$20 on Etsy) by ordering one with a pm 2.5 filter pocket. Finding pm 2.5 filter paper is currently challenging. Paper towels, believe it or not, are rated at roughly 33% on particle capture. Informative sites below.

DIY Masks: Is Paper Towel Effective at Blocking Viruses?

Yesterday afternoon, I purchased 10 new cotton face masks for $15 over Craigslist. Met up with the seller at a nearby grocery store. Masks are made in Vietnam and best fit ladies and also men under 5'10" or so. Many Etsy sellers are getting $9-12 each, shipped. I also ordered 2 more masks with filter pockets over Etsy. Finally, I pre-ordered a Cambridge Admiral Pro from Great Britain. Expecting July shipment. I wanted a Vogmask, but those are naturally sold out too.

Normally, I would not care so much about PPE, but my wife is seriously freaking out. I also realize our work-from-home stint ends in another couple months or so if not sooner. I'll ride the city bus again once everything hopefully returns back to normal. Riding the bus, in itself, is a recipe for infection, if I'm not already infected.

This morning, I hiked 3 miles around our area wearing a cotton mask. You get a few looks, but I see more and more folks wearing surgical masks. Like Asia, it's becoming a new normal.

As I understand it, unless you’re wearing an N95 or to a lesser extent, a surgical mask, you’re not protecting yourself much at all. The **** goes right through bandannas and such. I have no N95s or surgicals.

Since I only get out no more than once every 2 weeks, I’m either negative or have no symptoms. I do social distancing, don’t talk to anybody, and definitely don’t cough or sneeze.

Therefore, the only reason for me to wear a homemade mask is to make others feel better. Since Hardly anybody is wearing anything, including not one store clerk in my store, I’m not going to worry about it.

The reason to wear the mask is not to protect yourself from inhaling germs. It’s to keep the germs that you exhale from contaminating other people and surfaces.

We have to wear them where I work, UK Med Center, but when I go out, no, but I do wear disposable gloves.

I was quite fortunate to have found 8 N95 masks, and I wear them at work.

A few years ago I was talking to a guy from Japan that was here for several months. I asked if the Japanese wore masks because they were still worried about more sarin attacks. He said some wear them regularly but most he knows wear them if they think they may be sick to keep from spreading it. I'd like to see Americans start doing that.

During flu season, at my workplace, a shipping guy threw up before making it to a garbage can. He got paper towels and wiped it up, sloppily, and went back to work quickly. He was afraid he would be sent home because he didn't have sick days and couldn't afford being off work as long as it would take to finish the flu. Maybe all this will change how we handle diseases.

I wear a bra mask with a ski mask over it. There is no f’ing way that doesn’t reduce the likelihood of me getting the Rona. And I know the size of the particles and all the science around it. But a quarter inch layer of foam stuck to my face has to have some effect.
