And is "helping" Cohen with the transition according to WTVA sports. Polk says he has been going to MLB games and watching former players. Guy on WTVA made it a point to say they were getting along and no bad blood is between them. They even showed a short clip of them sitting in the back row of Dudy Noble together.

They interviewed Polk and Polk sounded 180 degrees different than the fit he threw when Cohen was hired.

Looks like Polk is like that guy that you were not really friends with in college that got pissed off when you run them off for being a dumbass when they were drinking and said they would never be back...only to sober up and come back around the next day like nothing happened.

Cohen is who Polk wanted all along. He suggested Raffo out of loyalty, but he knew that Cohen was the man for the job. /2018

I knew that Polk would be back, I just didn't think it would be this soon, but at the same time it doesn't surprise me either. We are his family for all intents and purposes, even if we pissed him off to the point of extreme insanity. I'm actually glad that he is back and is mending fences without meddling, or at least I don't anticipate him meddling with Cohen. The fact remains that he is a big part of our baseball program, and it would be sad for him to just leave like he did, right or wrong. I will give him credit for getting our program to a point where we could go out and get a coach like John Cohen, at the very least. I hate that he had to come back instead of going out like he did in 97.

Another angle on this, and I have absolutely no clue whether this happened or not, is I do think it is possible that Raffo may have gone to him at some point and asked for the job, or dropped a hint like "so, who is going to be the HC after you retire" and Polk gave in and told him he would give Raffo the job.

I also thought that your comment about Polk knowing that Cohen was the right guy all along was interesting, because maybe in Polk's twisted mind, he thought that he give Raffo the keys to the car, but stay along as a safety net and give him some head coaching experience, and then when we run him off, bring Cohen in. That way they both could achieve their dream of being the HC at MSU.

My second scenario doesn't seem very plausible to me, why would you want you choose someone who would fail and hurt your program? I do think that the first scenario could have happened, and Polk being loyal to his former players and coaches just simply went too far by showing his loyalty to Raffo.

Now, what I think really happened is that Polk knew that he couldn't cut it in today's baseball community. He saw that very early in the season that our team was going to be pretty bad, with injuries mounting left and right. Then you had the NCAA investigation, which was probably started by someone very close to the program. Then, his safety net, LT was going to be gone by July. I think all of that signaled to Polk that he could possibly be in trouble. I do think he wanted to keep on coaching, but I think he saw what was going on, decided to wait until the Ole Miss series and kind of play it by ear. After we lost two out of three to them, and were outplayed in every game except for Bowen's inexplicable near no-hitter, he decided to make a break for it. He tried to force Raffo in as the new HC while there was turmoil in the AD, with the plan that by doing so he would protect his staff, his players, keep his promise to Raffo, and at the same time, he would later reveal that he would be staying on as a volunteer assistant, which would keep him involved in the program. I'm sure that his plan was to go along with a national search if Byrne went that direction, while still promoting Raffo, and he would in the meantime try to sabotage the search so that there was no other choice but Raffo. I think his plan almost worked, except I don't think he counted on our fans sending Cohen mass e-mails begging him to come that apparently overrided Polk begging him to stay at UK, and I don't think he counted on us supporting Byrne like we did.

At any rate, I'm happy that he has apparently gotten over all of this. I certainly happened a lot sooner than I thought.

I'd hate to see how Polk would have acted if he'd really though Raffo should have gotten the job.

who throws a tantrum, packs the suitcase and announces that she's running away, only to return a couple of hours later looking for milk and cookies.

And he should be dealt with like an immature 8 year old little girl: Well defined boundaries and expectations, swift and painful discipline, rewards for good behavior, shielded from adult conversation, early bedtime.

I'll eventually get over his [her] incredibly stupid conniption, but right now I still want to kick him square in that empty nutsack.

become a Polk apologist. He is playing right into his typical stereotype. I respect Cohen even more now for spending time with this angry old codger.

For fund raising purposes alone. I think Cohen has made it clear this is his team and Polk won't be able to meddle.

So did Tommy tell Ron to let him run his own team or will Polk split time in Starkville and Jonesboro? While in Starkville, Polk could be a big boost in the fundraising dept. but needs to be kept on a very short leash.

....while I agree that it is to our detriment for Polk to be pissed off and running down the program, I am not sure it's a good thing that he is involved in any way besides fundraising. He has yet to show any concept of knowing when and how to keep his mouth shut. I have my doubts that he can happily help without giving too much input, and when Cohen wants to do things a different way, I fear that he'll get pissed again and say more ridiculous stuff. I think it would probably be better if he just quietly moved on down the line.

We need to keep Polk as far away from our baseball program as we can possibly get him. The man is a ticking time bomb and there's no telling when the next explosion will happen. I just hope that when (not if) it happens again, it's not worse than the last time.

I'm just saying that that'll be his line 10 years from now when Rick Cleveland interviews him after Cohen has won the national championship, hence the /2018. I don't really believe he wanted Cohen.

...I think that with Polk, you get the whole package, and asking him to walk the line of taking orders and using his name and influence to help with fundraising is asking for trouble. I can just see Polk loving some under talented kid that loves MSU and comes to baseball camp, and Cohen passing on him for a bigger name player and Polk getting upset and taking his little dolls and going home. All things considered, I'd rather have him gone.

but at this point I don't trust Polk any further than I can throw him. I'm also surprised that Byrne would let RP have free reign to come back on campus after his remarks and threats regarding him. Maybe everything is hunky dory now that Raffo has a HC job, but I'm still a little leary about Polk's motives with respect to our program going forward. I actually believe another reason Polk really wanted Raffo to get the job was that even if Raffo did accomplish things at a higher scale than what Polk's done lately is that Polk would still get a lot of credit since he would have essentially trained Tommy for the job for almost 2 decades. With Cohen, given that his coaching career has been totally separated from Polk's tutelage, that won't be the case.

..you being the ringleader. Here ya go:

Starkville is Polks HIOME. Has been for 30 years. He will be around. All of his people are GONE. LT included. Cohens is in charge with totally new ppl and administration. If you think you wont see Polk around and at games you are a bigger idiot than I thought. He will NOT interfere. As a matter of fact he prolly will pull an LBJ. There if you need him, but out of sight if you dont. Get a grip.

I'm talking about just going to the games and the public scrimmages and that's about it. I don't want him to do any fundraising.

I don't think he will cause any trouble with the media unless the media goes to him, for some reason looking for a sound bite. It will be no different than Johnny Vaught at Ole Miss and Boo Ferris at DSU when they retired. Polk will just sit around in his luxury box and collect dust.
