The only point of a red shirt in today’s game is getting an extra year. I’m sure he’s compensated more than me for his commitment to Ky.
Extra year = extra pay. It’s a business now but this is a Kentucky kid that I believe is jumping at the bits to get out there.
Kam Williams is out Pope needs to make a decision that is best for the team. Play Hawthorn!
Trent Noah could get more mins but he’s really hurting himself. He never shoots, can’t get space, can hardly play D, and makes bad decisions lately.
Can he step up and help with Kams role? Idk
But as a back up if he can’t do it then let Hawthorn play.

Haven’t seen him in a game and he may not make an impact at all. Seen him in blue white game and looked pretty damn good but that was the idk what we got game.
I remember he hit a three. Idk if you could call that a game tho. Or even practice. I think they did three man weave for ten minutes then it was over.

Next year maybe get back to the old days and go at it.

If he doesn’t play for UK this year he will transfer. Redshirts seem like a waste these days. If they can’t play, don’t recruit them. Good win tonight, but JJ and others coming off the bench will potentially bolt. I’ll keep watching games, but this broken system is in need of an overhaul (NCAA at large)

Insiders say he balls in practice & has been good at being Ament & WLSON before r
those games. Pope has said he will be a great Pro in the future which means he won’t be in college for 5 years at 6-10 with 7ft wingspan. He would be starting at W Va or W Ky.
He fits perfectly in the Kam spot & practices at full speed everyday without being injured

He simply can't compete physically in the SEC right now. He seems more than happy here and understands the path laid out for him. He committed long after we had a full roster knowing he might not play much.

I don't see it as a redshirt to save a year so much as a redshirt to get physically and mentally prepared to actually contribute.

Exactly. I think he and his parents wanted a redshirt year. If that is the case then do right by them.

Every year the hope is about some guy on the bench that either needs more playing time or in this instance player(s) that are sitting out the season. I don't see a savior for this season unfortunately unless JQ decides to play again. I don't buy that it is injury only that is keeping him out. Plus, without playing time and sitting out so long he may not be very good at this point either.

Now to the debate about red-shirting. It does seem to be a thing of the past given the amount of time guys stay in college or at one program now (especially if they are any good). So I have to conclude that neither of our two sitting out are ready.

Noah is locked and loaded to replace Kam's minutes. No need for Hawthorne unless a few more guys go down.

I don’t have an opinion on this. We haven’t seen him at all. Have no clue. Couldn’t do worse than a couple players at different times I would hope.
Good post. We know he has been described as having a ton of potential but needs more strength and weight and a RS would benefit him and maybe UK. But, no one posting in this thread has a fact based opinion. We just don’t know. The backup Plan QB is always the best player on the team for some fans. This is no different.

I'd be all for burning the redshirt if he can help us (and could he play in maybe 8-9 games and still have the redshirt?).
But I have a question:
If he is better than Noah right now, why isn't Noah the one redshirting?

Ament couldn’t compete physically either. Play the kid.

Playing games number is only for medical redshirt.

Can’t play at all for a non medical redshirt.

Ik I’m being lazy and could look it up. But what was Noah and Hawthorne ranked coming out of highschool? Hawthorne much higher right? Like right outside of the area where he should have been a contributor day one?

Which is odd, since football they can play 4 games and still red shirt, but basketball you can't even play a second. Now football is considering 9 games and still preserving a red shirt. Why can't basketball have a certain percentage and still hold their red shirt too?

The final ranking for Hawthorne was 64 but I think he was ranked in the 30s at one point. Noah was not top 150.

I don't think it is as simple as play him or don't play him. But it should be a discussion Pope and Hawthorne have, including how much does Pope speculate Hawthorne might play if he were to stop redshirting. If Pope tells him he'll get the minutes Noah has played in SEC play (<5/gm), then I wouldn't blame Hawthorne for sticking to his RS. But if he thought he might play 10+mpg, I think it could be beneficial to both him and the team. None of us have seen how he does in practice; Pope & staff have.

I am hoping he develops like that Swain kid for Texas (previously Xavier) has. No reason why he can't.

Don't really understand redshirt in this era.

Devils advocate is this team isn't winning anything that matters most likely regardless, due to poor roster construction and now injuries. So do u bring him in or save it?

Idc either way.

I don't know what the football rule is. But that is odd if it's different.

Currently football can play 4 games and still red shirt but the rules committee is considering expanding it to 9 is what all the headlines are saying. Dumb that football can play 1/4 and considering 90% of a season and still red shirt, and basketball can't play a single second without burning the red shirt.

I'm like you, I don't know what the best thing is. In regard to the team, we haven't seen practice or anything to get a feel for what he might be able to do in a backup role. And in this NIL era that extra year could be worth a lot to him (and maybe UK if he stayed) if he never becomes a projected draft pick. My WAG is they mutually decide on playing now if he's physically capable and expected to give UK 10+ minutes a game.

Pope raved about him when practice started this season, he was a 4* kid so he does have talent. We don't see the practices so we have no idea how well he looks. I guess the coming days will let us know if there could be a plan for him? The media will definitely bring his name up to Pope we can count on that lol.

Noah improved a lot over last season. I don't think he's regressed but I think our offense has, and that's hurt his playing time. But our offense is starting to get there, slowly. He got open looks on last years team and I think he will now on this one. We aren't there yet but Trent slimmed down and is a better player that could show it once our offense flows and gets spacing better. He still can't create on his own right now and may never be that guy on the court. That said, if Travis Ford could do it, I think Noah can too.
