</p><p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"><span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial Narrow','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial">There is great speculation regarding Alabama’s defense.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Pundits have even gone as far to postulate that cross-state rival Auburn will win the SECW Division.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>That idea, when coupled with the Alabama’s returning offensive personnel, and Auburn’s schedule, is stunning.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>For this exercise, however, let’s focus solely on the defense and its net gains and losses.</span></p>
</p><p style="TEXT-INDENT: 0.5in; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"><span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial Narrow','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial">The most glaring issue at hand is the secondary.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Coach Saban regularly plays five or six defensive backs, and all but one are no longer on the roster.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Returning strong safety Mark Barron, who led the SEC in interceptions, is the lone returning starter.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Additionally, disciplinary actions and injury have further decimated the defensive backfield ranks.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Rod Woodson (dismissed) and 2009 contributor Robby Green (suspended) will be missed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Fortunately, the secondary has always been the “pet project” of Coach Saban, and talent, albeit young and inexperienced, abounds.</span></p>
</p><p style="TEXT-INDENT: 0.5in; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"><span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial Narrow','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial">The corners are currently manned by Dre Kirkpatrick and athlete B.J. Scott.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Both are former 5* recruits. The former has the, juaguar-esque look of Deion Sanders, and the latter can play any skill position on the field.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Second team corners include 4* Phelon Jones (transfer from LSU) and 4* John Fulton (ESPN 150).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>DeMarcus Milliner (Rivals #2 CB in 2010) was expected to contribute, has been hampered by injury, but should be able to provide depth.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Strong Safety Mark Barron will play opposite Sophomore Robert Lester.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>While it is my opinion that first round draft pick Kareem Jackson will be Alabama’s most missed defensive player, Lester has drawn praise from the coaching staff and appears to have locked down the position.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>It is worth noting that there are several other players that come to the Capstone with excellent credentials, but for the sake of brevity, we will move along.</span></p>
</p><p style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt" class="MsoNormal"><span style="LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial Narrow','sans-serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1"> </span>The leader of the linebacking corps from the National Champions is now a Raider, and much has been made of the Mike LB opening left by Ro McClain.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Enter Donta Hightower.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>After suffering a season ending injury versus Arkansas, the linebacker reportedly has his weight down to the 260 range and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">

Cody.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>He will soak up offensive lineman.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Veteran defensive ends are Marcell Dareus and Luther Davis.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>They are backed up by players that would start at most SEC programs (Damion Square and Undra Billingsley).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>The two deep rotation has an <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">
average[/i] size of 6-3, 295 pounds.</span></p>
