When I was farming for gramps, it was all green, but that was driving 4020s and 4840s. I'm looking for 48" deck, I have about 2 acres to mow. I like to buy stuff and then run it till the wheels fall off, so quality is more essential than price.

I have one that it 9 years old and runs like a top. I just change the oil, air filter, and spark plug each spring.

I took a year off of cutting the grass and had to clean out the carb but that is not unusual and will only get worse with the ethanol going into the gas.

The steel is a better gauge, more heavy duty. I have not heard anything good from people that purchased from Lowes. I got mine from Malone in Meridian. You pay more, but get what you pay for.

That crud will clean up over time. The ethanol gas will clean out your fuel line and cause the gunk buildup to come into the carburetor. E-10 is fine for small engines but I would avoid E-85.

The mower deck and parts are made better on a real Deere. The belt pulleys on the Lowes versions are pieces of crap.

My dad had two John Deere lawn tractors for years (like 30 years) and switched to Cub Cadet and was just as pleased. We cut the cemetary with them along with our 3 acre yard and about three others in the neighborhood. I do agree they are top notch but do not even consider Lowe's they are cheaper made and you might as well go to Walmart and pick up a MTD knock off. Go to the dealer and make sure the deck is made of top of the line gauge steel. The deck is what gets torn up and we would weld a steel bar around the front of the deck as well but you shouldn't need that if you aren't running wide open around concrete blocks all day.

Zero Turn cuts down the mowing time drastcially. Check this out.

"The John Deere EZtrak Z225 ($2800) is perhaps your best dollar for dollar deal on a ztr mower for residential purposes. The EZtrak Z225 has a powerful 18.5 HP Briggs & Stratton single cylinder engine that is air cooled. The hydro gear transmission, caster wheels, and 42-inch Edge mower deck are just a few of the latest features that John Deere provides on this top ZTR mower. The mower deck has 1/4" cut height increments so you can cut your lawn to precise levels. The mower can move up to 7 MPH and the medium back seat is comfortable although there are no armrests. The motion control levers are adjustable to 3 height levels giving the driver of this machine the best ergonomics available. There is a 2-year limited warranty on the Z225, but keep in mind that John Deere has the best durability record amongst the lawn tractor brands and it appears that the zero turn radius mowers are just as reliable. You can order this mower online at Deere.com and have it shipped to a store nearest to you that deals with John Deere products. If you need a larger mower deck, consider the John Deere Z445 which offers up a 48-inch deck for $4550 and the 54-inch deck for $4750. Check out the best selling ZTR mowers for residential use here."

Dad has a John Deere 89 or 90 model. Never done anything to it other than routine maintenance (brakes, sharpen blade, oil, plugs, tires). Thing runs like a top. Mowed 2-3 yards/week for years.

Agree with others about Lowes/Home Depot. Never had one from there (Dad's is from a dealer), but have heard they are lower quality/cheeper versions for the box stores.

As far as cub cadet, couldn't tell you. May be a good one, but know JD is.

I foolishly bought a small yard property and sold it. Immediately regretted it and bought a big yard property two years later that required it.Now have a husqvarna that I have used for 12 years 18 HP Kawasaki engine. Had a friend who bought a POS Cub Cadet, Nothing but problems for two years and then it crapped out on him. He has a Deere now.

Spend as much money as you can. A cheap mower is just that. Buy from a dealer, not lowes or home depot. Small radius turn is nice as is a hydromatic transmission. Deere has a model that the gas pedal takes care of all forward and reverse, depending on how you press it. Not shifting is really nice. Deer has a cast iron block engine with a real radiator that is slick also.

Fill tires with green slime first day.

If quality is the question, get an Exmark. They cost a little more but you can't beat the quality. Get the homeowner version with a welded deck vs one with a stamped deck. Look at what the pros use.

avoid the lowest priced model, around the $1400 mark. They are available at some dealerships, but Lowe's/Home Depot is the main place you see them. The engine runs well, but the deck design is absolutely atrocious. I have literally kicked mine in anger over how poorly it mows. It can't handle any change whatsoever in elevation, and worst of all, John Deere refuses to acknowledge the problem. That model is an embarrassment to the name.

If you buy a Deere go to a John Deere dealership!!!!!!!!! the models sold at Lowes and Home Depot are cheaper grade models and a dealership will not want to work on them. Dealerships have top grade models and will service them better for you.

but do yourself a favor and check out Kubota. I had JD for years and was very pleased. Then I got a zt Kubota - wow! JD zt is not in the same class.

I can tell you that they are the best tractors money can buy. Do not go buy one of the tin cans that they are selling at Home Depot. In my opinion, Deere sold out by doing that. The ones they sell at the dealership are higher quality and you can't beat the customer service at the dealership.

After looking around at specs, the Home depot Deere and the ones at the dealer are different species. A Deere made like the one I used back in the 80's is going to be something like the x340 and that thing is 5000 bucks. And that is the cheap one. Why didn't you 17ers just tell me to just go to sears, damn it.

It runs very smooth and fast and has a commercial feel to it. I think if you go after the heavy deck option with the Kohler 25 HP model you will be please with any of the big boys. Just a matter of how much you want to drop. As everyone else has said go to a dealer not Lowe's.

If money is no option, EXmark is the best you can buy. With Deere, a lot of the price is the name.

Go with the Deere but not the Home Depot version. The Cub Cadet has not been built by IH for some time and does not have the reputation it once had. I just retired a John Deere after seventeen years of mowing two acres of yard and it was still running when I traded.
