I don't think the can improve it anymore than he already has. The only way he could improve is it to gain about 30 pounds and not lose his shot blocking ability which I don't think he has the body to gain weight.

...another year.

JV doesn't possess the stamina & body strength/weight to play in the NBA right now.

Of course, that doesn't mean he will not bolt for the NBA after this season if presented the opportunity.

Completely agree. His stamina is not there to compete with the physicality of the NBA, but that does not mean he won't leave this year. I'm scared to look at any mock drafts.

I don't think he would be real effective in the NBA right now either. But the question is, would staying improve his draft position. I say not much - if any. Skyler's point is that if he stayed, he would attract more attention from scouts. My point is, the scouts know about him. No question he lacks the strength to play much at that level right now. But do you think they don't work on that kind of stuff in the NBA?

..a lot if he comes back next year because, as the nation's top shot blocker, JV is going to get a lot of press next year (if he stays @ Miss. State).

Plus, if he stays, it greatly improves State's chance to get to the Big Dance next year. Moreover, Big Swat will be in the middle of all the ESPN college basketball conversations next year.

So if popularity & media recognition improves your draft status (which I believe it does) then JV has a lot to gain by playing his sr. year @ MSU.

I think his stock can go up next year depending on the talent in the draft next year. Not so much on Jarvis's ability. The scouts know what he can do without another year. If you have a deep draft this year at his position, then his draft position could go up significantly depending on how deep the draft is next year.

This doesn't answer the Q, but according to the scout currently sitting next to me at the game, Jarvis would be stupid to come out. Not even close to a first round pick and maybe not the first half of the second. His quote: "he doesn't have a position in the NBA."

I don't disagree with the scout. But is coming back to Mississippi State for a year going to create a position for him in the NBA. I say no. I think he will be back and it will help MSU a ton. But I don't think it will help his draft stock much, if any.

He has chance to continue to improve by staying, he's much better than at the beginning of the season on offense. I'd bet he breaks Shack's record and will get more attention and thereby iimprove his lot!

I don't know how much he can improve his game by coming back next year, but I think if he comes back next year, he goes higher in the draft. I don't really have much to back that up other than what I've read and seen on different internet sites that cover the draft. Most have him as a borderline 1st rounder right now at best, and everything I've seen for next year has him going as high as mid-late lottery and no lower than late first round. I think its best for him to come back. The only improvement I could see him needing to make is to become a little better offensively and develop a little more consistency on both ends. He had a a stretch in Jan. where his block totals were pretty low, and that dropped his stock a whole lot in the eyes of scouts. I disagree with the guy who said he doesn't have a position. He's a PF in the NBA. He may need to add a little weight (which is debatable whether he can do it or not), but he can be a solid bench player without adding a lot of weight, I think.

If you check that one out, he's projected at #16. I don't know if that's because they don't believe he'll come out this year or what, but they obviously believe that there's a lot of interest out there for him to be projected as a lottery pick during any draft.

That said, in no way do I think that Jarvis is ready, but I've come to find out over the last decade or so that the NBA could absolutely care less whether a kid is mentally of physically ready for the league when it comes to the draft.

Truthfully, its basically all due to laziness because I haven't felt like finding a new signature to replace it so I just leave it. I have a love/hate relationship with Barry. I loved him his freshman year, then hated him from his sophomore year until about the beginning or middle of conference play this year, and I'm now a big fan of his again. If you look back at a lot of my recent posts about him, I've been really complimentary and have actually taken up for him a good bit when others were bashing him. The sig will only be up for a few more weeks until basketball season is over, then I'll be forced to find a new one. I apologize if it bothers you.

Edited to add: It is absolutely not an issue of pride; like I said its basically all laziness. The only sadness I have of Barry being good again is the fact that I can't rag SouthPanolaDawg anymore about his crazy man-love for Stewart even though he was awful.

Varnado is what he is as a player at this point. Another year will won't change his game.

Look at Hansborough, scouts said he wasn't athletic enough to really contribute on an NBA team, and he came back for his senior season, and those fears by NBA scouts have been validated. Hans may not even go in the first round this year.

Varnado is a tremendous college player and his reputation has given him the flexibility to go after more shots and not get called for fouls. I wish he would go pro, but I could see him coming back for another season, just to make a run with a really good MSU team next year.
