Damn. Seriously? I just can't see them losing 3 potential first/second round draft picks and getting better.

It's hard for me to see either, but we return something like 35 out of our 44 in our 2 deep, including returning the most key position, QB. So I guess that, along with our favorable schedule, would be the reason.

final ranking and a Cotton Bowl victory over the 8th ranked team in the country would have seemed a little lofty.

......on how the SEC is as a whole next season. This year the league was way down overall. If everyone gets a lot better next year, it won't be as clear cut a trip to the top of the SEC West for OM as some may think.

Echoing Bruiser's thoughts, it's got to encourage their fans to see so many of the 2-deep returning. Still, sometimes just the loss of an individual or two can make a much bigger impact than fans want to believe. Oher and Jerry are prime examples, just as losing Mike Brown made a significant impact on our o-line's ability to block last season.

As for Herbie's pre-season rankings, he's just one person. I doubt most voters will see OM as a top 5 team. I mean, that's basically saying they're national champ contenders, which is way beyond realism at this point. I know they beat Florida last season, but great teams have bad days sometimes and good teams sometimes play at a championship level.. And if you have to take into account that OM beat Florida, then it's just as fair to point out that Vandy beat OM, as well as three other teams. Does that mean that Vandy should be a contender for the East title next year? What about MSU in the West, since we beat Vandy? Point is, I just don't(and never have) bought into the hype for the next season based on the one that just occurred. UGA is one team that learned that the hard way this last season, just as many before them and the many to come.

.....does it really matter? For fan hype purposes, sure, but reality tells me that an average program doesn't go from 4 straight losing seasons to top 5 in the country in the 2nd year under a new coach. If a few pundits get carried away and vote them that high, so be it, but the game is played on the field on Saturdays in the Fall.

Hey, I just hope they give Vandy their fair due for being one of the four teams that beat Ole Miss. I say rank them top 15 at least.

the host on the show Herbstriet was on had them ranked 4th. Arrowdawg is in typical "lets keep Croom" denial.

but like you said, number 5 or anywhere in the top ten seems a bit lofty to me too. A preseason ranking that high can only lead to something akin to the auburn crash this year.

next year. Bama will lose their QB, RB, and best Olineman. I know Bama has had the best recruiting classes, etc, but the Rebels return the best QB in SEC West (maybe best in conference if Tebow and Stafford are gone) and many experienced players. I don't see them ending #5 in the nation but they will start out at #14. However, in true Mississippi fashion they will probably finish 5-7 and Jevan Sneed will have a slump. Anytime a Mississippi team comes into the year highly rated they fall apart. (*Mississippi = any Mississippi college team not just "ole miss") I wouldn't be surprised if they end the season with a loss to us. I'm certainly not predicting it.

....for any team. Much of what happens with Ole Miss next season depends on what happens between now and the end of NFL Draft declaration day. If everyone comes back who is eligible, I think they will have a very successful season. How successful, no one knows. Unpredictable things can also happen that could affect a season.

John Jerry and Hardy. And while I'd love to have Hardy back, we played without him most of the season, and Lockett has come on strong to replace him.

I do agree about the unpredictable things.

UGA lost 19 players to season ending injuries this year, and they still managed to win 10 games with only one bad loss (Georgia Tech). They weren't over-hyped going into the season. A healthy UGA team would've been a national title contender, and at the time of all the pre-season polls they were healthy.

That said, I agree on your point about pre-season polls, and I do think they are worthless. Just ask our baseball team. That said, pre-season polls actually do mean something in college football, because they have a big time bearing on your ability to get into the national title picture. Auburn's biggest problem in 2004 was not schedule strength. It was their pre-season ranking.

However, even though the polls are meaningless, I find it noteworthy that we're actually getting this kind of hype. Teams like Auburn, LSU, and Alabama often get hype based on name alone. We don't typically get that in football, so they must really believe we have something. Also, I really don't think the pre-season hype is related to the Florida win. I think it's more related to the way we finished the season with 6 straight wins, 4 where we looked dominant.

Mississippi fans- Mississippi is going to be very good next year. I told everybody last year at this time they would be alot better under Nutt and you guys were. I said he was a great hire and he is. That being said, you Rebel 17's need to shut up and get off our board. We dont care to hear all that **** right now.

State fans- not jumping on me now about what a great hire I said Nutt was huh? Now then, quit worrying about Mississippi. Our future is bright as well. We are going to make the great strides with our new coach. He was a great hire as well. Everyone is going to be pleasantly surprised at the progress we make due to vastly improved coaching, juco players making impacts, impact freshman, and an improved strength and conditioning program. We have a solid chance to get to 6 wins and go bowling next year.

So you think the whole league may get better, but OM will remain the same?

This is no different than Backer's many preseason scouting reports circa 2000 where MSU was getting bigger, stronger, faster, while the rest of the SEC teams sat on their asses and ate marshmellows.

I'm not going to argue that we "have a clear cut trip to the top of the SEC West", but we sure appear to be one of the top 2 favorites. Most people will agree that Bama overachieved this season and they lose key players. Most notably the QB position. LSU appeared to regress and still doesn't know who their QB is. Auburn is in transition. MSU is in transition. Arkansas will be better, but shouldn't contend.

When you look at the big picture, OM is certainly the favorite in the West or 2nd at worst.

I'd be cautiously optimistic...we know what happens to most Mississippi schools (cream theory) with huge expectations. Hell, at this point 9-4 next year would be a let down. I remember 2001 for MSU. Therefore, I'm saying the rebels are a the clear favorite for the SEC West.

was just in reference to his idea that players leaving early will have a big say in the matter. I just think that's a small factor in our performance next year.

I wouldn't say we're the clear favorite in the West. We're going to be one of the favorites, but not the clear favorite. Most of the pre-pre-season stuff that has come out so far have both Alabama and LSU either right around our ranking or ahead of us. It's possible we could be picked as low as 3rd in the West next year, which would be fine with me.

...doesn't mean things might change by around September 1. I don't mean just with Ole Miss' roster, but changes within the SEC West. I am just not a fan of long range predictions for any team...period. Too much can change.

still the most talented team in the division (and on track for another top 5 recruiting class). If Jefferson continues to progress, they'll be the best team on paper at least.
