It was granted to them because of the golf course. No golf course, no special treatment.

However, it's so ridiculous that this is even an issue. They should be able to sell beer because beer is a legal substance. Not allowing it to be sold in certain areas while allowing it in others is stupid.
Edit: I know it's been said before, but that has got to be the shittiest web site ever.

Set up roadblocks to stop drunk drivers if that's his worry, but to try and shut down someone's business investment because he personally does not agree with people drinking until 3 am or on Sundays is ridiculous. Bryan's argument about '5 deadly car accidents' is completely out of line, considering none of those wrecks had anything to do with Cowbells.

or was that somewhere else.

And I agree with you, no golf course means no resort status. But it should not be an issue anyway. Why isn't it a separation of church and state issue? That's the only reason it's banned on Sundays.

It's just a name to allow places to sell liquor in otherwise dry counties. Just the fact the sports bar is there is all it takes for a valid "resort status." If I wanted to open a bar in any dry county in the state and could convince the supervisors to grant me "resort status," I could get it too.

The only places I had ever heard it mentioned were golf courses, so I thought that without that Highlands couldn't qualify.

Unfortunately, logic doesn't get to come into play when the majority is on the illogical side.

opening a restuarant in the Lake Caroline area, and he received "resort status" and Madison is not a dry county. I think "resort status" gives you the right to sell alcohol until the "wee" hours (like 3 or 4 am).

It's OK to drink on some days and in some places, but not on other days or in other places. And in some places it's OK to drink beer but not liquor. And, hardest for me to figure out, there are also places where it's OK to drink liquor, but not to drink beer (Soso, MS being one unless they've either outlawed liquor or legalized beer in the last 20 years). These are all great mysteries.

You are correct that it does exempt you from laws on closing hours, and it also exempts you from laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol.

Edited to add that you are correct that I didn't fully describe it.

Or does the article say that they'll still be able to sell liquor out there?

So the sherrif's idea is to take away beer sales, which doesn't limit liquor sales OR the hours of operation, and hope that it somehow cuts down on the partying? Sorry, but if you have a bar that stays open for 2 or 3 or 4 hours after everything else in the city closes, people will go, regardless if they can't get beer. And to think that forcing those people to drink whiskey/rum/vodka/Jager/etc. instead of beer will help curb any drunk driving or partying is just plain stupid. As best I can see it, it's a college town and the kids are gonna party regardless; taking away beer but still selling liquor doesn't make a damn bit of sense to me. This whole idea is just dumb.

I'm not sure if it's still the same, but in Olive Branch you could only buy beer in restaurants on Sunday. This was around 95 when I just turned 21, and my bartender g/f had to serve my Jack and Cokes in styrofoam cups so she wouldn't get caught serving liquor.

I understand that law, don't agree, but it makes no sense to sell liquor and beer is illegal.
