Here's a dilemma for those who want Croom fired:

If you're going to blame Croom for the offense, then you have to give him credit for the defense.

If he's to blame for hiring a bad OC, then he has to get credit for hiring TWO good DCs.

Quite the dilemma, since when you consider that the two sort of cancel out and make him at worst an average coach.

I know, he has an offensive background. But he is the HEAD coach, in charge of both units.

I don't know how much of the play calling he does. I've seen posted here people who claim to know for a fact, that he either does all of the play
calling or none of the play calling, and everything inbetween. If it's "most" of the play calling, then he should either stop or be fired.

Bottom line: Woody must go. He's been awful for 5 years. If Croom is to stubborn to do it, then unfortunately he will have to go too. I just know that I
would really, REALLY like to see a Croom-coached team with a different OC. As good as our defense played, if we had any OC at all we would be a damn strong
football team.

edit: OK, the 4th-and-15 was one of the dumbest things i've ever seen. Almost Orgeron-esce. I was ready to fire Croom on the spot right then.

it may be possible that McCorvey is simply his achilles' heel...he and woody came up at the same time and were friends, and Croom may feel guilty about getting the first black HC job in SEC while McCorvey didn't..so he feels that he "owes" him something, because Croom simply got lucky in getting picked, while McCorvey didn't. Croom may very go down with the USS McCorvey.....hence the Slytanic will sink...too bad it has to be that way. BTW, I don't hate Croom, just wish he'd go away.

His record is something like 17-23 coming into this season, and he's staring another 2-3 win season in the face. That would put his record here at 20-32. If you are 12 games under .500 in 5 years, and have shown very little signs of improvement and continually make the same questionable/bad calls that you made in your first year, you should be fired. Its great that he has made two good DC hires, but that should by no stretch of the imagination save him from getting the ax. He's the head coach. He's in charge of putting capable assistants around him. He's failed at that. He's supposed to win games. He's failed at that.

is the one side of the ball that we are successful with and you think that speaks well of Croom? Interesting.

The bottom line is that he is a stubborn coach who refuses to simplify the offense or do whatever it takes to move the football and its likely cost us a 3-0 start. Oh, and his game management skills are pretty brutal too.

If Croom can't see that and make the right call, then put the blame on him.
If Croom will hire a new OC, I will give him 1 more year.
And I've never been to practice, so I don't actually know how hands-on or hands-off he is on defense.

Croom's 19-34 right now (with a few of the wins and one loss vs. I-AA teams). I'm confident we could hire a new coach who could do better than that.

and that's more than enough to get anyone fired in my book. There is no doubt that the team is a heck of a lot better than they were in Croom's first three seasons, but as you said, we're staring straight at another 3 win season and that's unacceptable at this point in his career. The man has an uncanny ability to blame anyone but himself and that mindset will not get you very far in the SEC.

The thing that really sickens me out of this whole ordeal is the fact that he got Coach of the Year last season. I'll be the first to admit that I had fun as hell last year and it was great to get back to a bowl game, but a trip to the Liberty Bowl would get a lot of coaches in this league fired. The only reason that it seemed like such a huge leap for State was because Croom set the bar so low during his first three seasons.

Out of all this, the one thing that I do know is that MSU has bent over backwards to give the man every chance possible to succeed. He's been given support, he's been given money, he was handed complete control of the team, and above all he's been given time. Unfortunately, after also being given a huge raise and a new contract extention , Croom's got our balls in his hands and he knows it. Therefore, I guess the only thing for us to do for the next three years is to deal with his poor game management and contradictions, but I hope that Byrne is already makign a list of his possible replacements.

at the end of this season he should be gone. That is 5 seasons to get the job done. That's 1 decent season and 4 bad ones. If we have any hopes of being more than a very bad program he will need to be fired. We will probably pull out 3 more wins and Croom will stay on another year. He should be told before year 6 that a winning season is a must. He had a very favorable schedule this year.

Get rid of him as quickly as possible before you have an Orgeron situation on your hands (you're almost there now). I promise that the food will taste better, the sun will shine brighter, and the air will smell sweeter in Starkville once he's gone, and you'll be so happy that won't even care if you bring in a coach from Arkansas. That's what happened in Oxford.

if anyone thinks Bob Davie would be a good candidate. I don't mention him because he did the show last night, but because he was my choice at the time Croom was hired. He has good credentials (yes, he came out from under both Sherrill and Holtz, I think), has ties to Texas A&M, and is still young enough...and listening to him last night, he likes Starkville, and he wasn't hesitant in his criticism of some of the offensive calls. For all you Baptists, I also have to mention that he also was HC at Notre Dame..so guess he's catch flack for that...BTW, Go Irish!!
