Croom could be very successful here if he only played his cards correctly. If he would hire an OC and let them actually take control and oversee and run the offense, he could be more successful than any coach in MSU history.
The face of the program...and understand what I'm saying here....the perception outside of the MSU family towards our program is at an all time "high"....follow me here....at an all time high as far as "class, character (I know, I know), doing it the right way, etc. etc. I know I lost some of you there....but if you still ask the Herbstreits, Corso's, etc of the world they all pull for Croom (thus MSU) to succeed. The national media does all it can to shine MSU in a positive light is what I'm getting at. (Now think of the Sherrill era and the national media....). That is the point I'm trying to make there.
Next is Croom's ability in momma's living room. We've all seen the results in this regard. Sure we can argue that we are still not getting the cream of the crop in recruiting, which I totally agree. But we've done pretty darn good considering the circumstances. One winning season and we see what happened this spring and summer in recruting. Imagine that with a consistent winner.
If Croom would simply treat the program like a manager of a major league team and "manage" the program, he could be ultra successful. Put your pride aside (we all know you were an OC in the NFL.....for one of the worst franchises in history I might add), and hire an OC and let them actually run the offense. If they become successful, guess what? You then become successful and are all of a sudden a genius.
Why he can't see this, I don't know. This is not a good time to put this comparison out there I know....but it's worked in the past....just look at Tuberville. He makes no bones that he doesn't know the offensive side of football. He hires an OC and let's then run it. Again, not exactly the time to use that as an example, but he's been pretty darn successful with it in the past. And I assure you, he will again. He hasn't suddenly forgotton how to win.
Unfortunately Croom will never have this chance because I don't believe he'll ever do something like this.
Edited to add.....since we all like rumors....I heard that Byrne went in Croom's office after the Ga. Tech game and wanted to get his "ideas" on improving the offense, in which Croom got up and walked out of his office mumbling as he left, "We're going to continue to do the same things we've been doing to make the offense better", leaving Byrne sitting there.
