Here's what the other SEC baseball coaches expect from us this year.

with 2 more going an equal number of times. You've never won the national championship.

Historically, you've had a good baseball program. It's probably the 2nd best in the conference, although South Carolina and Georgia might think they deserve that spot as well. I still think it's ya'll based on things that have been stated above (fan support, facilities, etc.)

LSU is the premier baseball program in the SEC and it would still be a big stretch to compare them to Kentucky basketball or Alabama football. </p>

or moving on to another job. And if Raffo knew that we needed to make some changes, he should have also known that the promise Polk made him might not be one he could back up.

couldnt have said it better......does a certain def. coordinator's name come to mind?.......after all that, he was more than just a defensive genius

Rebhead and SoxFan are right. In terms of historical accomplishments, MSU baseball <<< UK basketball or Bama football. Even in by far the best era of our baseball program, we still only went to 4 CWS in 12 years. And we've only been to 1 in the past decade.

MSU has been a very successful baseball program, much moreso than Ole Miss, and any rational Ole Miss fan will admit that.

But to equate it to UK in Basketball or Bama in football is simply sheepish, or dumb....your pick.

I wasn't the one who said MSU's baseball program is the equal of UK in hoops or Bama in football. Lord knows I wish we had a couple of NC's to show for all those good teams, and I think the NC's those two programs have far outweigh any of the 'tradition'-oriented things I mentioned above.

However, we still do have many trips to Omaha, multiple SEC and Regional championships, and other on-field accomplishments to point to. And here was my point:

The guy who said that about Bama and UK theorized that those on-field successes we have had, plus the traditions we have, and then adding a coach who can actually produce are enough in a lot of people's views to ensure we get some credit from pollsters. Even if/when that credit is not warranted.

You and I know how most pre-season polls work. Writers from around the country don't know one damn thing about a particular school, but they know they've heard of them and they 'are usually good', so they rank them higher than they should be. Same goes for coaches polls.

Can you agree that Ohio State football gets artificially ranked higher in the pre-season than they should be based upon reputation alone? He's saying that if we could just put together some competitive teams from now on, dumbass voters will most likely give us credit, whether it's deserved or not.

I happen to agree with the theory. You don't, apparently. Right?

...I thought coach34 was the ultimate MSU concern troll, but patdog tops him.

Let anybody display over-the-top concern about a MSU sports team, & patdog is always there to agree.

Let anybody type out a "this is going to take several years to correct" post, & patdog will always see the wisdom in such an assertion.

Last but not least, let some Rebel ******** hijack a thread & start educationing the MSU sheep on their proper place in the universe, & patdog is always there to verify the "fair & balanced" assessment of the Rebels.

It's like I keep telling you patdog: If Cohen finishes last in the SECW this season, it will be solid evidence Cohen was a bad hire. This is not one of your "It's going to take several years to repair" projects.

Given the man, the school & the circumstances, it's an instant gratification project.

I did mention something about SEC Championships, so it's not like all we have is a nice stadium and great fans. Also, we have gone to the CWS an average of once every five years since 1976. I don't know many programs in the SEC that can make that claim. Maybe LSU can, but I don't think any other SEC team can claim that, and quite frankly not very many teams in the country can claim that.

in baseball as Kentucky in hoops and Bama on the gridiron.

Sounds like the Rebs on this post run in baseball circles. Probably not but they sure talk they have. MSU was known as the standard for baseball among teams like Miami, Texas etc. Baseball kids from all over the nation knew about MSU baseball. A junior college roomate of mine walked on at Birmingham Southern during Shoop's first year. Other players on scholarship at B'ham So. from Illinois, S. Florida talked to my friend about MSU baseball while their mouths watered. He traded them MSU hats etc. They knew the program. They wanted to here about Dudy Noble and the famous Left Field Lounge. Annually MSU was recognized in preseason rankings even when we lost major players. Why? Because we were Miss State and the program was consistently a winner and put players in the professional ranks. Polk was a legend and baseball insiders respected him.

Now, I will say we've slipped. I think Ole Miss is getting the nod for higher rankings and they have proven to be more consistent however I think MSU will bring back that swagger under Cohen.

Also, Raffo was already planning his staff and current pitching coach Mitch Thompson was on his short list. I think it was understood that McNickle was on his way out.
