They are going to try to torpedo the OU and Texas thing because they are all cult and no cattle.

Nobody likes change, but the reality is we have all known for a long time that a 16 team conference is inevitable. Until this popped up, I thought the SEC would be fine. But when I realized yesterday that OU/Texas is likely going to be a package deal, that means its either the SEC or B1G 10 that will land them. If the B1G 10 does, well they now are the power brokers of all of college athletics. I do not want that. Neither do any of you reading this.

Does it make the SEC even harder for a team like us? Sure. But rising tides lift all boats. We would probably get an extra 30% in the kitty just because when this deal comes together its going to be massive. And for anyone worried that Texas is going to have some untoward influence on the league office, I would say I sure as hell hope so. Alabama has spent the last 50 years controlling rules, refs, and everything else in the SEC office unchecked. The Aggies could have done, it, but they are just whiners.

I heard that douche Bjork whining on the radio about it yesterday and I realized how fitting it is... I hope you can all see the whining little twerps the Aggies really are.. They don't want to share the SEC with another school in a state of 30 million people. They were so sure once the got to the SEC they were going to win it all... Well 10 years later and they are middle of the pack more often than not.

**** Texas. They acted like they were all big **** and better than everyone else. They haven’t been in the national discussion in 10 years and I like it. Now they are trying to get into the SEC because they realized they weren’t the big dicks they thought they were. Screw Em. Let them wither on that Big 12 vine and enjoy their 9-3 seasons.

I know zero Texas, A&M, or any Big 12 fans or alumni. I only know what I read on the lines of articles & between them, starting with the Longhorn Network deal.

My two cents is 17 Texas. They seem to have a superiority complex (is that a thing?) & treat everyone else as beneath them. Just look at all the teams/programs/schools that fled them.

Some of you guys must of taken a summer semester in College Station.

Let's just talk football since that's what its really all about. As of right now, we are sitting in a division with the greatest dynasty in CFP history. Plus LSU, Auburn, Texas A&M and Arkansas. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but us and the flimmy flammies are at serious resource disadvantage. And it appears we are just now entering a whole new wild west phase of college football, its only going to get worse.

The odds of beating all of them in a round robin style 6 game tournament in a given year isn't so good. I know that, because over the last 30 seasons we have done it once. And that was as much about how bad LSU, Alabama, and Auburn were back then as anything else (14 combined wins among the 3 of them.)

I don't see anyway you do two 8 team divisions in a 16 team conference. Like others have said you might go a decade or more without visiting team from the other division. I think they break it into either 4 divisions or something else creative. You will get a couple of teams you play every year (And I know we are close to Tuscaloosa, but Alabama has to play Auburn, Tennessee , and LSU every year. Nobody gives a **** about our "rivalry" with them.) Anyway, there will be years where you get a good schedule and years where its death row. But right now it's death row every 17ing season.

Let's change it up. In 125 years our football team has had 1 top 10 final ranking (1940.) Its not like we are talking about undermining our vast history of dominance in the SEC west here.

I lived in Texas for the last 15 years. The Aggies are by far the most annoying fans. . Oklahoma is the worst combination of LSU and Bama. Loud and trashy and a lot of them. Texas is just smug. But generally the kind of smug where you tell them to 17 off and they do. The best comp I have in the SEC for Texas is UGA fans. Now if you live in Austin, it would suck because there are so many. But that's anywhere.

I cannot stress this enough, when the Red River shootout came to Dallas you could barely notice the Texas fans, but the OU fans were mongrel hoards of filth. This story always sticks out to me as the best way to describe the 2 fanbases:

https://www.foxnews.com/story/texas-football-fan-nearly-castrated-in-bar-fight-in-oklahoma-bar

I don't like Texas and I don't want to be confused with some kind of sympathizer here... But I see 4 options with those guys... Assuming as we all know, the Big 12 will die sooner or later.

1. SEC
2. BIG 10
3. Independent (Unlikely)
4. PAC 12 (Already failed 5 years ago)

I do not want to live in a world where the BIG 10 has Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Oklahoma. That's a conference that gets 3-4 teams in a 12 team playoff. We need for that to be the SEC if we are ever going to make it. If you could guarantee me that they don't end up in the Big 10, then 17 them both and feed them fish heads. But it looks like they want a conference and are a package deal.

The Aggies have never demanded, and got special treatment from their conference. Texas has always had that. They get a bigger cut of the money in the Big 12 NOW than the other teams do. Texas is poison. They are a disruptive and disrespectful influence wherever they go. Let them go to the BIG or the PAC and bring THEM down. We don't need them to be the best, no matter where they go. 17 them and the horse they road in on.

Isn't that the point? Put an extra $30 million in the kitty for a team you will beat as often as just about anyone else in the conference. Folks have talked about Clemson coming over for years. They would bring minimal money and a lot of *** woopins.

Socks, you make some good points here. Perhaps it’s the State fan in me that sees nearly every scenario somehow working against us.

I’d love to see a Sum Of All Fears scenario where the powerhouses fight amongst themselves over recruits to some sort of glorious mutual destruction, but after the joke NCAA has become, I have little faith in any comprehensive NFL style model to make football talent distribution fair anytime soon.

What I can’t figure out is why anyone wants to add two schools with a combined one football NC in the past quarter century between them to our conference just to add 4 million TV sets in the state of Oklahoma. It’s a bad deal by just about any measure for every existing member of the league. Texas is overrated as 17 every damn season, and doesn’t bring a single additional dollar to the TV revenue table. OU by themselves would be fine. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. The whole thing reeks of desperation on their end. They need the SEC way more than the SEC needs them.

You two get it. As of today Netflix is a $226 billion company. CBS/Viacom is a $26 billion. FOX is worth $20 billion.

If the SEC wants to be too dog, they need to grow the eyeballs, not the footprint. Footprint was 2010 thinking. It's now time to plan for 2030.

The SEC can improve the content whenever they want….without expanding. Just go to a 9 or 10 game schedule with current members. What is added by tacking on two more 8-4 teams (which is the best case average of either of them in this league)?

So you want the SEC to be a content creator like Disney but not enter into agreements with Lucasfilm & Marvel UT & OU?

And you’re wanting one extra conference game for each of the current SEC schools when you could instead have much more— 17-18 additional new conference games involving Texas and Oklahoma?

That’s shortsighted.

I don’t want the SEC to be content creators in the sense that they go to some a la carte model for games, seasons, or teams like some are suggesting with a Disney+ or Netflix model. That would likely be a disaster for consumers…to the tune of $50-$60 per month perhaps if you got rid of the tens of millions of folks who currently pay for the SEC Network but absolutely never watch it. Also, Texas is hardly a LucasFilm / Marvel in the college football world. More like Paramount Pictures…an old name that has been getting by on name alone and occasionally puts out a decent product, but is wildly inconsistent.

Your point is correct about the additional games, but the pie also has to be sliced two more times (and that’s assuming you can deal with the turd in the punch bowl that is the Longhorn Network). Does adding 15% more games and only one state of new viewers generate 20-30% more revenue for the league? That’s the question. I’m not sure that it does.

Not the same. Texas brings more unique fans to the television than any other school. Period. 2 of the 3 most college football games in history were the Texas BCS title games against USC and Alabama (first cfp title OSU/Oregon was number 2.)

Sure the sec can do better and even if they kept winning more titles than a B1G + Texas & OU, they lose the head seat at the table. It's all about the money. The B1G 10 already has more combined athletic department revenue than the SEC, but it's close (1.85 billion to 1.75 billion dollars.) If you put Texas (#1) and OU (#8) in the B1G 10, it's going to completely shift the power dynamic.

16 teams are coming. Super conferences are coming. 2 teams are going to get added to the SEC very soon. They are not going to go for Kansas and Duke... Football is the revenue source. You don't want to add teams that drag the revenue of the other schools down. It's either the BIG 12 or ACC you get to poach from and the ACC looks like they are holding on for a while. Clemson won't leave and the top 2 revenue producers are FSU and Louisville. #12 & #19 respectively.

In the Big 12 Texas, Texas A&M, Nebraska, and OU all got a disproportionate payout of TV revenue. A&M left the Big 12 because ESPN was going to originally air high school games on the Longhorn Network. The A&M board of regents lost their minds on that one. Of course, the LHN never did actually do that, the NCAA didn't allow it. Before that issue, A&M was going to the PAC 10 with Texas. Because they did not want to share reverse equally with the rest of the conference and that's what Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe wanted to save the conference.

I was listening to this crap all day every day for years. It's all anyone was talking about at work and on the radio. I'm not saying Texas is innocent, they are pricks for sure... But the Aggies were just as bad. Now they have come to heal in the SEC, just as Texas and OU would.

I don't want Texas or Oklahoma in the SEC either but I would imagine that the people making this decision are in pretty close contact with revenue sources like ESPN (and others) and have a pretty reasonable idea about whether or not the financial incentive is worth it. And I'm also guessing they don't need to rely on the opinions of a bunch of message board posters (including myself).

I could not care less if Texas and Oklahoma go to the Big10 or Pac12. I have no 17s to give on that matter.
If the SEC becomes the 2nd best conference as a result, I also have no 17s to give there.

People on her continually claim conference influence and conspiracy when MSU loses a game, or doesnt get a ruling in its favor, etc etc. Yet so many cling to the SEC like it will deliver us to the promised land. Its quite interesting to see those two things somehow exist within conversations here.

UT and OU coming to the SEC will not help MSU from a competition perspective. The NIL reality is such a wild card that it has the potential to easily overshadow the effects of conference realignment when it comes to impact and importance.

How many of the viewers in those two games were A&M fans rooting for Texas to lose? Probably just as many as there were Texas fans rooting for them to win, and we already have those in our umbrella now (which wasn’t the case when either of those games were played).

The B1G is slightly ahead for two reasons. The first reason is something we can’t do anything about....sheer force of population. The schools are bigger, they all have way more alumni, donors, etc., and all the states are large population centers compared to most SEC states. Secondly, those numbers don’t take into account the new ESPN contract for the SEC, which should push us past them regardless. I can see it being a marginal revenue benefit, but I think there is way too much up in the air that will still be up in the air when the membership vote comes up....specifically the Longhorn Network. Unless it’s a condition of their membership to immediately shut it down when they get voted in, I don’t see it passing.

16 teams are coming. Super conferences are coming. 2 teams are going to get added to the SEC very soon. They are not going to go for Kansas and Duke... Football is the revenue source. Fans are the revenue source. I still think the most sensible approach is a school from Virginia and a school from North Carolina, or either of them plus Oklahoma is the way to go to maximize revenue with 16 teams. This isn’t simply an “add two big names and count our money” proposition, there is absolutely a ton of complexity....specifically related to Texas. It’s also vote for a 9 or 10 game conference schedule every year...make no mistake. I’m in favor of that, but MSU or multiple other schools might not be. It’s also likely a vote to eliminate divisions and go to some 4-team pod format for scheduling, which drastically alters the conference championship criteria. Then it’s also a referendum on the Longhorn Network’s viability and Texas’ autonomy over their revenue. A lot of moving parts. This can’t be one of those Nancy Pelosi “we’ve got to pass it to see what’s in it” situations, all this has to be ironed out on the front end. And I’m very skeptical that all those questions will be answered to the satisfaction of the voting member schools anytime soon.

This is 100% going to be wrong. The formula for the SEC deal was intended to somewhat reflect reality. ESPN and the SEC are not going to blindly stick to the formula if it costs them a ton of money. If we were adding FSU, ESPN would probably try to use the formula to limit the additional dollars, but would still come to the table with something. With UT, it's going to be a new negotiation completely. The only reason ESPN would not want us to add UT would be if they felt they will get the revenue from texas sports broadcast without adding them to the SEC. Not sure how the long horn network works (I think it was done in partnership with ESPN originally?), but if ESPN will get a better deal from Texas being in the SEC, they will bring some of that additional money to the table if necessary to make it happen.

Yep. ESPN is losing its *** on the Longhorn Network. It will go away (likely through a one time buyout) and Texas will be an equal revenue sharing partner in the SEC. Mississippi State will get an extra $30+ million a year from the new contract. The league will be reworked where we hopefully don't have to play Alabama and LSU every 17ing season.

We aren't winning **** under the current format anytime soon. In a 12 team playing, the SEC super conference might get 4 teams in some years. That's a hell of a lot better situation for Mississippi State than the current one.

Long term view: someday, the SEC will start a streaming service for all of its sporting events (think Netflix) and do away with CBS, ESPN and, eventually, the NCAA. (There was a recent thread about this, right?)

Adding UT and OU is Step One of the process.

Adding the PAC-12 and/or the ACC to our "conference" is Step Two.

Step Three is establishing our streaming service, which will ultimately result in the NCAA's death.

Step Four is adding in what was previously known as the B1G.

After that, we can work on ruling the entire world. ***

Where is the $30 million figure coming from? At last check, the payout was about $40 million total per school. It’s really hard to see that practically doubling just from adding two schools (one from an existing footprint state), and also having to split with those two schools.
