Haven't heard much outside of East St. Louis down south? That's because there is NOTHING ELSE down here worth talking about except maybe Rochester's three college-talent wide receivers. SHG being ranked #1 in 6A is a joke, so really no use talking about them, Peoria vs. PND hasn't happened yet, so nothing on that front to discuss, and until a possible Althoff/Rochester matchup, southern Illinois football will remain in hibernation. While some fans down south have bemoaned the fact of too much coverage of teams up north, this year especially will show why that type of coverage is more than justified (if it ever needed to be justified in the first place).

You are correct Althoff and Rochester will be a good rematch. Edwardsville will be ok come playoff time that's pretty much it downstate.

What about Edwardsville? Don't they have a match up with ESL? what week is that game?

Could be a big matchup, but I would like to know their records, scores and opponents going into their week 6 game. As of now East St. Louis has been more impressive. This week's Normal Community/PND game should engender some interest, but compared to the week-after-week games up north, southern football should not be in the same discussion.

Well some years it needs to be justified.....

Rochester has won state championships 5 of the last six years, and SHG has won five state championships over the last twelve years, including one in 6A.

The fact that SHG's championships all occurred in years that their nemesis JCA was taken out of their path for one reason or the other (SHG has NEVER beaten them) leads me to discount the statistic you quote regarding them and their championships. Rochester is ONE team. They surely didn't win all 8 classes.

Haven't heard much outside of East Side here. Edwardsville? OFallon?

I will try to give some insight here. E'ville is currently a work in progress. The have a pretty big front 4 wth Epenesa and another long kid at the opposite end however the DB's are kind of small. They had trouble matching up with Rock Island receivers last week which is how Rock Island made it a game until late in the 3rd quarter. On offense they have a sophomore RB that rush for just under 300 yards last week however he is about 5'5 150lbs. With the QB struggling to hit open targets, relying on a kid that size will not last all season. They will find ways to win ball games however the offense will need to step up pretty fast.

O'fallon has a big test tomorrow in Belleville West. This is a must win for both teams in terms of confidence. West is 0-2 losing to Batavia and LWE so a win over O'fallon to restore confidence. A loss will pretty much eliminate their playoff hopes. O'fallon gave up a ton of points to Normal West which is not a good sign. There is no way they can hang in 8A struggling to beat Normal West.

I would like to nominate this quote as "non-sense quote of the year"...
Discounting a team for winning 5 state championships in 12 years as some kind of an underachievement because they've never beaten JCA. Really? What a load of self-righteous crap.

Why is that a joke? They have been one of the most dominant programs in the state for the last decade

All.... Cat Box and USD24 Pope Francis has declared 2016 the Holy Year of Mercy. Citing forgiveness, compassion, and mercy for "one" and all. That would include those that are afflicted as well.... Ratsy P.S. Thank you gentlemen for your kind words as it applies to SHG.

And you sound like someone who probably thought SHG was going to win 6A last year. Speaking of non-sense!!

I apologize, I forgot how they dominated the eight classes through the years. Go back to the shgfootball forum and post your stuff. Your comments would go down good with the Kool-Aid they are drinking, whatever the flavor!!

I "sound like"?
This is a message forum - there is no sound. All there are is words to read. No need to read anything else into my statement. I am neither a fan of SHG nor JCA. Just call out non-sense when I read it.

You're right, but sometimes the ignorance is so blatant that a response is required. Not to do so is almost criminal.

Any good southern IL newspaper rankings? Peoria Journal? St Louis area? Any reputable rankings for Peoria, Springfield, ESTL, Carbondale (basically outside Chicagoland coverage) for a little science experiment.
