I have moved to Kabul
Current format it all comes down to who is hot in October. The team with the best record rarely wins the WS. Since inception of wild cards in '95 team with best record has won 4 of 21 times. One being the '05 Sox.
The Braves had 3 HOF starters and only won 1 WS in that 15 year or so span so it all comes down to a few weeks. That being said, if the Cubs win 3 WS like Boston etc. I am going off the grid.
It appears as if the significance of a possible Cubs' World Series title extends beyond Chicago. Lester spoke of the draw of contributing to a Cubs' World Series victory, and supposedly Heyward took less money from the Cubs to play on the North side for a chance at it as well. Couple that with good young talent, sound baseball leadership, a committed owner, a renovated Wrigley and additional revenue streams and you have the makings of an organization who is finally ready to compete in today's baseball environment. MC63's view that the past will somehow influence the Cubs' future seems like wishful thinking on the part of a Sox fan, IMO.If the Cubs win 1 World Series Chicago will go off the grid![]()
Excellent post. That last sentence is something I am seeing and hearing from a lot of Sox fans. I have to admit, I am very curious to see what a Cubs World Championship looks like. But I also know to be careful what I wish for. I know I'll never hear the end of it should it happen...even if the Sox win another before the Cubs. It will only take one from the Cubs.It appears as if the significance of a possible Cubs' World Series title extends beyond Chicago. MC63:
I do like your post. But the Mets team the Cubs beat during the season was not the same Mets team they played in October.
It was an improved Cub team, as well.
Most importantly, the Cubs will continue to implode because of the overwhelming media presence. If they actually get to the WS, what they experienced last October will be nothing.
It was so bad ... I was driving away from the UC on the night of the Hawks opener. The cubs had beaten Pittsburgh that night in order to play St Louis. I turned on WBBM FM (the one that wasn't carryking the Cub games, but rather, stuck with news.) The reporter said to "stay tuned for 45 seconds worth of noise from Murphy's Bleachers!" When they stoop that low for Cub stuff, you know it's lover done.
...but let's keep the steroid users in the gameOn a positive note, glad to see Manfred uphold the ban on Rose. I would have definitely been done with MLB. I already was done after the 94 playoffs cancelled for years.
They're supposed to be a Cubs fan backup plan. Go hang with that other thug franchise the Dodgers.Go SF Giants
This might be the dumbest comment I've ever read on this board.Dean - unpack! The Cubs will always find a way to lose. Look at last October. They'd beaten the Mets 7 games to none and were picked to win the playoffs. But the team's hitting went into a choke induced slump. I'm aware that Murphy had a great series, but they should have been able to overcome that
And what about the media. Did they criticize the choke? No - thye said it was a learning opportuntiy. Learning, my rear end. The only thing they learned was imploding.
They can add all the Cardinals they want, but they'll still be the Cubs.
DBacks would be very dangerous in a 5 game series as well. With 10 teams making playoffs, Just gotta get hot for 3 weeks now and get in. regular season not nearly what it meant before. They're supposed to be a Cubs fan backup plan. Go hang with that other thug franchise the Dodgers.
He may have burned out Soto and Browning that way.what about Shoeless Joe in the HOF? 3rd all time highest avg. Rose bet on the Reds problem is when he did not bet on them. He would extend starters, staff-everything to win a game he bet on-then that hung them out to dry the next day or 2. Guy should be banned for life period.
exactly Browning's arm broke while pitchingDi

What does the Cubs' past have to do with their present? Burdens on you, guy...Rather than making a sweeping statement and then running away, perhaps you have the guts or confidence to explain exactly what you mean.
MC scored a Touchdown this year?????What does the Cubs' past have to do with their present? Burdens on you, guy...
Also, a bit of unsolicited advice, you don't need to create a new thread every time MC scores a touchdown. Simply add to the initial thread, or does AOL not allow that option.

I sincerely hope you didn't spend all afternoon crafting this drivel....No need to consider unsolicited advice from a technology cop. You post however you wish and stay out of my business, thank you.
Re the Cubs .... there's an old adage that says those who ignore the lessons of history are doomed to repeat its mistakes.
There is something that overwhelms that team when crunch time comes around. The expectations on the team are far greater than those on any other. First, the players have to repeat over and over and over that they're not concerned with any curse. That adds 50 pounds of stress right there.
Secondly, there are all those simultaneously sappy and crazed fans who beleive that the team outshines the '27 Yankees -- and lets them know it. Another 50 pounds.
Third is the media who need to create more and more controversy to outdo the competition. This year, in addition to the nonsense of previous seasons, the leading TV news station (Channel 7) and the leading radio station -- WBBM -- both went off the charts in their coverage ... losing whatever sense of objectivity they ever had. The Tribune's Paul Sullivan quit writing columns and switched to love letters. I couldn't beleive him. I used to respect his work.
None of these outlets could admit that the Cubs merely choked their brains out against the Mets. If the White Sox had caved like this, there would have been hell to pay. Of course, the White Sox didn't choke -- they went 11 - 1 lin the playoffs and World Series. Can the Sox compete in the future? -- I'm not sure that many teams can with the Red Sox paying a pitcher a million $ a game and the Cubs giving Heyward a small country.

Well MC63, when we make a post on a public board it becomes everybody's business whether we like it or not.No need to consider unsolicited advice from a technology cop. You post however you wish and stay out of my business.
