If he'd just offered half the talent that WANTED to play at MSU, it would've been nuts. But Zach Cozart wasn't good enough. That loser shortstop Bunky Kateon was good enough though!! Throw in a few Louis Colemans and a couple of Henry boys, and it could've been something special!!!

A. Manieri should've been our coach instead of bringing back Bilbo Polk. Thanks, LT, you steaming pile of ****.
B. It's fitting that Louis Coleman got the final out. Very fitting indeed.

I cannot express how ****** this is.

Also, we only have 11.7 scholarships. I mean, I know that top talent wants to play here, but we'd be much better off spreading scholarships amongst mediocre talent. After all, that's baseball. As long as the kids have fun, the atmosphere is great, and Polk gets to type letters to the NCAA on his computer typewriter everything is grand. You can't expect little ole MSU to make it to Omaha every year.

Again, thanks to Doc for ridding us of LT. Let's hope Cohen can put this thing back together.

wanted to recruit guys and would "promise" them that they would have their position for four years no matter what. Idiot should have just recruited baseball players, figured out who was best, and found them a spot for them to play on the field. It wouldn't have mattered if Albert Pujols begged Polk to let him on the team, by God a promise is a promise and Brad Jones is our guy. And my name is on the stadium and I know more baseball than you have forgot, so move along.

That's really how it was.

C. we would of had more $$$ support with John Grisham if Pat Mac, and LT dont <17> that up.
Dudy Noble would not be in the state it is in now.

I'm happy Paul won but Pissed he did not with us.

All the pain and torment would have been worth it. I could live a very happy Bulldog life if we can add to "Polk having to watch players he rejected win the national title" and add a "Polk having to watch the man he WOULDN'T SUPPORT for MSU head coach" win a national championship. And if it happened, I hope Ron Polk doesn't get the first mention in any of the celebration!!!! I hope they give rings to everybody that's ever meant anything to MSU baseball from Jim Ellis to Jeff Brantley to Everett Kinard, and I hope they leave him completely out!!!

LT basically pulled the wool over everyone's eyes, or most everyone's eyes. It was always like, well we have the top baseball facility in the country, doesn't matter what Baseball America says about Arkansas, and we have the man who wrote the book. I believe he knows what he's doing. And the biggest lie was "Ron Polk has the best interests of MSU at heart."

He never kept up Dudy-Noble Field, he just kept telling people that it was the nicest and the best, and I guess if you're from Eupora, and you only really follow your HS team a little bit and MSU, you have no reference point to compare, so you just buy it and accept it as truth. When your idea of elite baseball is Tupelo high and New Hope, MSU probably does look really awesome. But that's only a small part of the baseball universe.

I think a lot of people liked the fact that Polk made excuses because then they never had to go home feeling bad. We lose to Ole Miss 24-0, well that's baseball. Luck wasn't on our side is all. There is an element of luck, but a lot of playing winning baseball is preparation and fundamentals. Polk very rarely talked about that. Maybe he just assumed that everyone has read his book. And if it wasn't that, it was scholarships, the sun, and one time he blamed an error on someone's white t-shirt. It was ridiculous.

And honestly, I'm happy that Tommy Raffo got out from under him. I think Polk really held Raffo back as far as his career. And I'm glad that Raffo didn't get the MSU job becuase Polk would have still been around, and heck probably would have tried to come back as HC aGAIN whenever he felt like it because he was the MSU baseball demigod , or whatever title he made up for himself. Shoot, I hope that one day I get to MSU and Arkansas State hooking up in the finals of a regional in the next few years. Obviously, I would want MSU to win, but to even get Arkansas State to that point would be an accomplishment.

The ONLY damn thing I miss about POLK is him getting thrown out of games and arguing..

I was going apeshit over those two "hit by pitch" in the 6th..saying Augie needed to at least say something..protect his "boys" and team
Could not believe he jsut sat there and took it...especially that first one.

I agree with most of what everyone is saying, but one thing does piss me off. I like how everyone now say hiring Polk the second time was a mistake. He had just taken Georgia to the CWS and when Mac left, these message boards were begging Polk to come back. If you remember, Polk office phone number got out on interner and all the MSU fans called and filled up his voice mail. I thing Cohen is going to get this thing turned around and thinking about Polk the last few years makes me sick. I like all the geniuses (sp) now that knew it was a bad move, when they were the ones cheering the hire.

You're right that most of our fan base was clamoring for Polk to come back. Most of our fanbase at the time also thought LT was the greatest AD ever for "keeping us in the black."

However, many of us realized Polk had quit on our program TWICE before and wanted to go in a new direction. If this message board had existed when Polk came back I'm willing bet it would have been 50/50 as opposed to the 90/10 on GP.

there were a solid number of people questioning bringing Polk back. I was one. I didnt shout it from the rooftops as being a mistake like I did Crooms, but I wanted new blood in the program back then. And I know former players that did too. LT took the easy way out and it cost us.

LT's legacy- Polk II and Crooms- LT should be spit on in public for those two

Coach34 is right that there were lot of message board posters, even on Gene's Page, that very much did not want Polk back. I thought from the beginning that re-hiring him was a train wreck waiting to happen. I saw enough of Polk ruining our program in the 1990s before he brought McMahon back to get us back on track to know I never wanted to see him in Starkville again except in the visiting dugout.

I am sure I am not the only one who thought that he should have been fired then, know you couldn't without horrible press, but did anyone think it was anything but lucky run?

I don't know how you can look at the talent on that team and think is was luck that got them to the CWS any more than the luck that just about every team needs to get there. Did the pitching staff perform a little over their heads in the regional and super? Probably. However, people seem to forget our late season slide corresponded with some injuries, most notably losing Turner's bat for a few weeks. As soon as Brandon returned to the line up the offense really picked it up.

Having guys like Turner, Moreland, Easley and Weatherford got that team to Omaha more than luck did.

you just dont realize how much that last part is the truth. But it was luck.

Those same players you just listed are the ones I have been told over and over called a players only meeting
and said <17> the polk ****, we arent going out like this..and they didnt. for that last month or so of the season,
we started hitting and running, stealing, and bunting. Polk be damned..and we won.

we didn't have enough of them and our pitching staff was average at best (and I'm being extremely kind to call that pitching staff average). When your top 4 starting pitchers have ERAs of 4.51, 6.02, 4.69, and 5.72, you're pretty damn lucky if you make it to the CWS. And if you watched the CWS at all that year, it was painfully obvious which 1 of the 8 teams wasn't like the others.
