Pound blue marlin this past weekend while tuna fishing. Well, we fought him for three hours with no chair and only bud light to sustain us. I did have some captain Morgan ratholed and I drank about half that during the event. I have never experienced anything with that much power and he totally screwed up our trip. The moral of the story is cut the line and go catch tuna.

That's awesome. I've caught a lot of fish but marlin isn't one of them. It's on my fishing bucket list with snook, rooster fish and tripletail. Two times I've been this year we've found a tripletail but those things are picky. We didn't have live shrimp so we couldn't get them to hit. I free lined a live croaker right to it, it swam up, investigated and backed away.

The guy I used to work for has only been deep sea fishing once in his life. Some of his buddies were going to Hawaii and they needed a 4th guy to round out the group so he agreed on a whim to go. Once the boat pulled out and had traveled less than 1/4 mile from the dock, they hooked what they could tell might be a good fish so, him being the new guy, he go to be the one to take the line. They fought for about 4 hours and landed the fish on the deck 3 times, the third of which was final. It weighed a little over 1,100 pounds - I forget the exact weight. It would have been a record if he had been using a lower test line. He says his legs held out fine while he was reeling the fish in and out but, after it was all over and he tried to get up from the chair, his legs wouldn't work any more and he had to crawl over to another chair to sit down. He was a celebrity after it hit the local news that night and nobody would let him pay for his own food or drinks the rest of the time he was in Honolulu because they all wanted to pay for his food and drinks and hear the fish story. He had the fish "stuffed" by a professional taxidermist (several thousand dollars) and it hangs in the lobby of his business in Macon today. It's about 14 feet long. This story is no lie; you can come see the fish anytime you want at Trailboss Trailers in Macon, MS.

Tripletails piss me off more than any other fish. I like you haven't caught one yet, but have seen a half a dozen swim right to my bait and say thanks but no thanks. The only time I got a hit was with a voodoo a couple of weeks ago and I guess my anticipation made me miss and just like that he was gone. I guess one of these days I'm going to bring live shrimp along to cross it off the list. Of course it doesn't help that Jason Smith's Rebel *** lands about twenty of them on his Mobile fishing show, just rubbing it in my face.

By rigging a popping cork with the line through the stick so that it slips, swivel as a stopper about 4' up the line. Big fresh dead shrimp with a splitshot 6" up the line. And throw just upstream from the buoy or pile the fish is on. Let the shrimp sink below the fish as the cork drifts past and the fish will dive to get it. If not pull the shrimp back up the the cork and let it sink again. We use to always look for them on the way back home after the trout quit biting. They're usually closer to structure and easier to spot when it's bright and sunny. And don't pass up small pieces of trash when looking for them, because I once saw a 10 pounder using a floating coke can to shade his face.

Snook are awesome creatures. I have caught quite a few of them. Good action on a Zara Spook.

If you get on a school of Dorado. Once you hook one leave it in the water. Then you and your buddies can catch everyone of them in the school because they will not leave the one hooked. If you pull him out of the water they will scatter. But you can pull in the others. I don't know the science behind it but It works.

OK, you wanted pics so here they are. I took these last Friday. The last one is of the small sign sitting on the counter below the fish in the lobby. It tells a little about the experience. I hope that the forum software here will let you zoom in or click on them to make them bigger but I'm not sure. Enjoy.

wow - when I read 1,100 lbs I immediately assumed it was a Black Marlin .... for a Blue, that's an incredible size fish .... Coach66 - that's a very cool feeling that you will carry with you for the rest of your life ... you can try to explain it to someone else but until they experience it for themselves they won't understand totally ... congrats on membership into the Marlin Club ... after a fight like that, I wouldn't look forward to hooking into a Yellowfin to quickly ... very nice dolphin as well - sounds like a great trip

For the record that is NOT Coach66 in the picture, I weigh in at a smooth 216*

I was behind the camera. Ironically the blonde captain there's dad played ball for MSU in the Archie Manning era and laughed with us about sacking Archie's *** in one of the games I think 1970. He said a few years ago Archie, Peyton, and Eli went fishing with them and they had a grand ole time.

I got a chance to fish in Kona once. Never really hooked up with a marlin on my trip but somewhat had a ringside seat to a guy hooked up with a grander on another boat. It was incredible to watch. The guy insisted on bringing his own rod, which evidently was not up to handing a fish that size. The captain pacified him and let him put it out with the other rods on the boat. Sure enough, the grander hit the inferior rod and was off in about 30 minutes.

I caught a dolphin and two spearfish and we did had a small marlin hooked for about 60 seconds when I was not on the rod. The marlin bite was not on during the trip but I did get to see some incredible sights riding around in great fishing boats just offshore. Would love to go back.
