There is no such thing as a clear cut national champion. Winning playoffs is as close as you can come to a true title winner. All the champions before BCS ERA were voted in. BCS ERA used a funky scoring system which was better than the playoff selection committee IMO. CFP is a political selection used to keep out G5 and certain non blue blood P5 programs.
