That's the simple fact and it's pretty obvious. Relf is not the answer, not now, not later. He gets playing time because he is bigger than Lee and is thus more useful in short distance running the ball. Unfortunately, he is absolutely terrible throwing the ball and that is not going to change. Furthermore, he is apparently unable to grasp most of the playbook. Lee isn't great by any means, or really even servicable, but he at least gives us the threat of a pass and is able to grasp our entire playbook. Both are liabilities.
Our fanbase sometimes brings up Croom just to bash him aGAIN, but it is perfectly legit in this case. His complete failure to sign SEC level QBs is killing us this year. We can't move Relf because Croom left us two QBs, one with experience, neither worth a crap. Mullen signed a better QB in his first class before coaching his first game than Croom came close to signing in 5 years. Mullen is trying to patchwork through this season, using these two guys as placeholders for either Newton (or some other JUCO) or Russell next season.
Croom left us with less talent than he inherited. It's just great coaching by Mullen and co. that we are able to compete with SEC teams with this group.</p>
