Noticed the line for this wkend vs Fl started at msu +24 1/2. who can recall past msu underdog victories with a 20+ pnt underdog? Would like input. I can recall several upsets but not pt spreads.

but historically, I'd say some of our biggest upsets were Army (forget the year), UT (around 1951 or so), Alabama (1980 & 1996), & UF in 2004. We've had other upsets, but those would be some of the biggest (put 1996 UA in since they were #8 & we were something like 3-5). We beat UM a couple of times we were probably a pretty big dog (65 & 71?). Not sure when betting lines were established, but for most of the games I mentioned, it was probably more rare to have such a large line.
Think about it. In '80, we were a bowl team against Bama. Yeah, they were #1, but we were a pretty good team.
1996, Bama was a one loss team that was #8 and we were 3-5, but on the upswing (a mirror to where we are today, in my opinion)
Jerious Norwood upset Florida in '04, and in '00, we were the better team on the field.
A win over Florida or Bama this year would be comparable to the win over Bama in '96, but it would be bigger.
I'll go ahead and say it, if we beat Florida, we're going to play Oklahoma in the Independence Bowl. Sooners are 3-3 with three games left where they will be road underdogs, plus Oklahoma State at home. If it all falls apart, they may go from preseason top 10 to no bowl.

I don't think anyone else in the SEC will ever match what they did. I think before we beat them, their last SEC loss was in 1976 or something like that. Between 1977-1980 Bama won two NC's, and in that time span their only losses were to Nebraska in Lincoln, Southern Cal in Birmingham- that team had Ronnie Lott, Marcus Allen, Bruce Matthews- all NFL HOFers and a ton of other NFL players, Notre Dame in 1980 in Birmingham like 7-0 when ND was relevant, and....Mississippi State. The ND loss came a couple of weeks after we beat them.
Actually that was a remarkable stretch of games for us. In one month we:

It was 1935 and that game was in West Point. To me, that is probably our most under appreciated upset due to the fact that it was so long ago and Army football today is terrible. But back in the 30s, it was a big deal for a team to travel that far and beat Army in West Point.jwbigcreek said:

was huge. UT was ranked in the top 10 and were the defending SEC champions. To win in Knoxville on Don Smith's run was a stunning upset. TBS game of the week ruled back in the day.
and Miami was still average, a year away from becoming the monster of the early 80's. Also, the 71 egg bowl final was 48-22. Was tied at the half and ole miss blew it open in the second half. Also, I remember the pep rally on the drill field, but it was after we beat bama 6-3 in Jackson.
- Alabama 1980, Florida 2004, Tennessee 1986, Alabama 1996, Florida 1992 Alabama 2006 in that order . I can only think of one really good JWS upset, because he had us playing on a high level we were supposed to beat good teams, therefore not making it really an upset
And some guy named Jim Kelly was their QB. The 70's were when Miami sucked. Schnellenberger came in 1979 (5-6), and then ripped off 3 straight 9-win seasons in 80, 81 and 82. Nat'l Champs in 1983 after stunning Nebraska in that incredible Orange Bowl.
Ole Miss won 48-0 in 1971. 1n 72 it was 51-14.
You're right about the pep rally. It was after the Bama game and Bellard referred to the Miami game in his remarks, saying that the atmosphere we had at that game is what we needed to strive for.

we had Collins, Cooks, Haddix, Bond, Hull and many other Bob Tyler recruits. Dirtiest game I ever watched. Miami actually scored a go ahead touchdown, but it was called back on a motion penalty.

#1 ranked Penn St in 81. Seems like they had a WR that was awfully good & made some big plays in that game (was on ABC I think).</p>
I remember him standing up, Glen Collins clapping and Cooks pointing fingers at the Miami lineman who clipped him. He came in the next play, sacked Jim Kelly and then they snapped the ball over the punters head the next play for a safety. Shades of 2000 vs Florida.

an 'old fashioned butt whoopin!' USM, on the other hand, was typical of most of the games we played them in the 80's. They got lucky and scored after a fumbled punt. Meanwhile, we moved the ball at will, but couldn't score TD's so we missed field goals and generally choked away the game.
gettin all up in the usm huddle in 83? Sent us back 30 yds on pf. Irrelavant, just came to mind.
his locker along with his HS All America clippings to fire him up. Seems the USM guy had a broken nose because Hornback hit him in the face during the game. He never should have gone up to Notre Dame!@#
Don't know what the line was on those games, but those were the biggest upsets AGAINST State that I can remember.
