Anybody remember John Ray?

Ray came to Kentucky following a stint at Notre Dame in which the Domers won a NC with a D-fence that Ray coached to an astounding average 3.8 points allowed per game

Ray had great recruiting success: Sonny Collins, Dave Roller, Joe Federspiel....those were just a few of the names that played at UK under John Ray

Ray won a huge game against Archie Manning's Ole Miss team in maybe his second or third game as HC at UK....but little else, unfortunately

He ended 10-33 at UK after four years, was released, and finished out his career in the NFL as a DC

Mark Stoops has brought in some offensive talent (i.e., Boom), and won more games, but then again we play more games (12 vice 10)

I hate to say it, but my personal opinion is we are reliving history and sending Coach Stoops on to a happy future in the NFL

If there is a silver lining to this story, at all, it is that Ray was followed as head coach at Kentucky football by a guy named Fran Curci

Yep, remember him well. Remember the excitement his naming as coach was based on the fact he had been at ND and was a very successful coach. Joe Fed went on to play what...10 years or so in New Orleans.

And like Stoops, it was during John Ray's tenure that UK launched its biggest stadium upgrade with plans to replace Stoll Field. Curci was the coach when Commonwealth Stadium opened, but the plans began with the excitement Of hiring Ray.

I mentioned all of the things above in a post last week. I see the potential for the same thing happening again as well - if Stoops doesn't make the changes and turn around the program - we can only hope a similar situation occurs again - minus the probation of course!

How did this guy named Curci do in his first three years here? I bet by year three he must've been rollin'!

So Sam, I guess you are expecting 8 wins next year and 10 the following year? I hope so!

Another DC ...gotta stop the madness and bring in someone that cares about offense...We should have had 35 pts at halftime on Sat

Yes remember... Think he was the 1st HC to play Commonwealth... Lots of hype... Do think he had good defenses but couldn't score...
One of the UK all time greats played for him... Jeff Van Note... A defensive player while at UK he played center in the NFL for years... Smart guy and a leader.....
