Saw on the scout.com Nebraska site saying "multiple sources indicate that Dan Mullen is interested in leaving Mississippi State" and might be interested in the Nebraska job, but it didn't appear to be going anywhere.
Don't know how much truth there is or if Mullen is playing the Freeze game.

Sounds credible

I'm good either way. He's brought us credibility again but don't doubt we can find a coach that can pick up where he left off.

Pelini got fired after winning 9 games (prebowl). Dan has won 9 or more in 2 of his 6 seasons. I know the big 10 is easier, but that's intense pressure. I don't see Dan making that movel

Nothing to see here. They correlated Mullen not being at the Conerly with him leaving MSU. He didn't attend last year either. Both times he was at in-home visits with recruits.

Laughable that people think the head coaching job at MSU, even in it's current state after a 10 win season, is a plug and play. We're just as likely to fall back to perennial 6-7 win seasons with another coach. I pray on my knees Dan Mullen doesn't leave.

The funny thing now-a-days is that Nebraska is a step DOWN from the MSU job. Also, the only viable reason I could see him even considering leaving was because the B1G conference is a joke and he could win much easier in that conference. That and the fact that money is no longer an issue even for the MSU's and Ole Miss's of the conference.

I don't want him to leave either, but I certainly think he has broken through the glass ceiling if you will. It would be much easier to attract an up and coming coach than it ever has been. Again, I want him to stay, but I am not losing sleep over it like I was 5 years ago.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Nebraska is a step down from MSU (or UM either). But both of our jobs are very much more attractive than they were 10 years ago. There just aren't many schools that can come in and hire a coach away from either of us. And if one does, plenty of good coaches would love the chance to make $3M+ per year and recruit in the MS/AL/LA area.

Doesn't seem to me Mullen's name comes up very often when there are coaching vacancies. I find this strange since he's done a good job here at State. Must be something about him that some schools aren't comfortable with, or maybe he just tells them he's not interested.

I have no credible "multiple sources" but I tend to agree that while the Nebraska has the stigma of being a better job than MSU to us old timers, it really isn't anymore. The SEC's dominance on the national level, while driving non-SEC schools and fans mad, has collectively raised all SEC jobs to a higher level. Couple that with the facilities that Dan has upgraded while here, the fan support and moderate expectations, and the apparent institutional freedom to change things with the AD and I think MSU is a very attractive job. Then you have the fertile recruiting ground and a reasonably high salary to add to that. All this to say that I think the MSU job right now is >> Nebraska and even >> Florida since Florida's facilities have declined, they payed Muschamp less than Mullen, and you'd have to deal with Foley.

I think it's pretty simple. His name was hot early on, but the schools calling to feel him out were gigs that had lost their luster, only they hadn't realized it yet (Miami for sure, maybe Michigan depending on who you believe). Then he wasn't as hot of a commodity b/c there were questions about his recruiting and ability to win the big game, so maybe good schools weren't calling at all (or maybe his agent declined interest). Now that he would be a hot commodity again, he's got MSU set to a point where only a handful of programs even have business calling him. His situation (largely thanks to how he has built the program and who is returning next year) is simply too good to walk away from unless he just hates it at MSU, which if he did he probably wouldn't have required schools like Miami to make him a godfather offer.

After next year, Mullen will either leave or most likely that will mean he intends to be here until he retires or things go south. I don't have any insight, but I think he stays. Unless maybe he has a dream school out there that nobody knows about.

Trying to be as objective as possible, Mullen has a tendency to rub people the wrong way. Hell, Tebow nearly didn't attend Florida because of Mullen. Glad Mullen is our coach but I can see why a program like Michigan or Miami would be hesitant to hire a guy like Mullen.

That said, if he leaves I wish him well. He's done alot for State and for that I am thankful. It is a much different program than it was when he got here.

I don't think his record is what ultimately got his fired. He got the boot for the same reason he won't be called by other other schools looking for a HC. He's a dick.

Do you think Alabama would kiss Saban's *** if he was 8-4/9-3 every year? Except Saban is actually GOOD when it comes to booster relations.

Mullen is getting a raise. Sorry man, a competitive SEC coach is not going anywhere except to the NFL. We have the big stack at a table full of smaller stacks. We (ie SEC teams not named Vandy) can outbid anybody because of the revenue stream and the conference's socialist ways as long as the AD is dedicated enough to his coach. I still haven't figured out how a 75 million dollar expansion can be justified if you are not willing to pay coaches 2 million more a year to keep it filled.

The 'game' of hiring coaches has changed over the last couple of years. Now, coaches are NOT contacted about vacancies UNTIL their agents indicate that they are 'willing to consider leaving.'

Jim McElwain was 'ready' to leave Colorado State and his agent put his name out. That's why his name was mentioned to fill positions at 3 or 4 different schools before Florida went after him.

Yeah, a few weeks ago my father-in-law (an A&M fan) said "I assumed Mullen would have gone to greener pastures by now."

My response was "He's got the number 1 team in the country and he's making over $3M a year (in a place where it isn't very easy to spend that much). He's got a fanbase that supports him and a wife that loves the community. How much greener does it get?"

Vandy is competitive salary-wise with the rest of the SEC, maybe even in the upper part (probably not with the present coach). They won't reveal how much they pay but private schools tend to pay coaches very, very well.

It's not about the salary with Vandy. Football is not a priority for the university. They aren't going to dump a lot in their facilities so coaches are going to be turned off.
