All the people on here who wanted him fired a couple years ago? Raise your hand.

To be fair, I can't blame those who wanted him fired. His first 3.5 years were a disaster. But props to him for being willing to take a paycut and smaller buyout after falling short of his expectations those first few years. Then bringing in Nate Loenser to run the defense and getting rid of Matt Abdelmassih.

Hopefully now we give him a big NIL budget to continue to bring in talent from the transfer portal. And pay Loenser whatever it takes to keep him here. I am sure he will get quite a few mid-major head-coaching offers after this season.

I never called for Hoiberg to be fired, but I didn't think he deserved another contract extension after the 2023-24 season. But after this season? Totally different story, because now Fred likely would attract substantial interest from bigger-name programs. That's what contract extensions should be about, rather than sweetheart golden parachute deals that just make ADs and coaches feel good about themselves.

Good for Fred - he earned it.

This his record all that much different than Miles?

I really don't remember but it seems like they would be similar?

Me. 3 years of the worst basketball stretch in school history. Would have been warranted, and anyone that claims they knew this turnaround was coming is just as full of ****
Your position wasn’t indefensible but IMO it ignored his history at ISU. Perfect guy for NU. Yeah it took longer than we would have liked but COVID I believe hurt his rebuild for at least a year.

Will you still feel that way if we’re one and done in the dance? Man what a nut punch that would be.

I give more weight to a great regular season than most BB fans tend to. Would have loved to have won the B1G regular season title this year, which would have been far and away the biggest accomplishment in program history. Finishing #2 is not the same, obviously, but it's pretty damn good.

Also think Fred has upgraded his recruiting the past couple of years, which is important going foward. Would like to see him grab a veteran PG out of the portal this offseason to go with the young talent.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I recall the 'con' against hiring Fred was that he was not a big fan of recruiting.

The fact that HS recruiting is a secondary factor now, and that your seasons are won or lost from the Transfer Portal - which is what helped his success at Iowa State - I think Fred and NU may be hitting their sweet spot.

Good move

One thing hurt Fred more than anything else. It was the con artist Matt Abdelmasseh
Fred has definitely upgraded his coaching staff in recent years.

Since this place is big on “remember when you all thought this, blah blah blah” 3 years after something happened… you should all give a thumbs up or down on this extension. I’m thumbs up on this one

Damn. Just had a flashback. Gotta go pour myself another drink.
Hell he’s still sleeping in Self’s coat closet down in Lawrence. I see him on their bench and always think “I could have swore he wasn’t there anymore”

Doc actually did a hell of a job down in Southern Miss, he inherited a disaster from Donnie Tyndall but a few years later built them back into a 20-win team that almost won their conference. It was funny to see him coaching in sweatpants his last year there. I think after the stress of that job, he was ready to settle into a cushy retirement gig.

I will say that the last three basketball coaches we've hired (Hoiberg, Miles, Sadler) are probably three of the best human beings in a profession full of scumbags and shady characters. I don't think I've ever heard anything but great things about all of them as people.

Should've been fired, earned an extension now, possibly too many years on a senior heavy team, we'll see how he reloads next year.

Three consecutive 20+ win seasons, including the best season in school history, two NCAA tournament appearances.....give the man a lifetime contract. Have you forgotten how awful this program was for the past hundred years?
