Don't know bout that, but I can tell you who doesn't need to start. Bracewell chokes in the same fashion as Evan and woodruff

why?

He came to State as a 1st baseman who might pitch
He was the #2 for Gulfport behind Gentry in HS

He starts and you are likely to get the same result we just got from Bracewell

What we need is the ******* guys we signed to be SP's like Evan Mitchell and Brandon Woodruff to do their job, step up, and lead this team from the hill

Exactly... Starting holder would look a lot like what you just saw. Closers are hard throwers coached to get quick outs. Starters are coached to work counts with finesse pitching and eat up innings. Totally different mindset.

Well maybe our starters should be coached to get quick outs or any outs. Lindgren and graveman are the only ones who get outs

... They are coached to do that... The problem is mental with our pitchers... Not whether or not they can actually pitch. Stratton was not that good two years ago, but his mentality changed last year and he dominated. Any number of factors can mess with a pitchers head, and that is what you are seeing.

exactly

A case in point- Roger Clemens and Calvin Schiraldi

Teammates at Texas that led them to the 1983 NC. Schiraldi was named the CWS outstanding player. Some people even thought Schiraldi had more talent than Clemens- but Clemens was drafted 19th in 83- Schiraldi was drafted 27th. Both loaded with talent

Clemens had a toughness on the mound, a killer instinct, and a will to win. He went on to a HOF career(whether they vote him in or not)

Schiraldi? Had no nuts and folded like a cheap suit in the 1986 World Series. He was shifted back and forth between the bullpen and starting because they couldnt find a place where he could settle in. Out of baseball by 1991.

The difference in these two men wasnt ability- it was mindset and the mental part of pitching. Some have it, some find it at times, and some never pick it up.

First of all, Holder was a starter all through his high school career and a district starter for three years so he understands and is equipped to be a starter because he can throw three pitches for strikes. Second of all, he was never the number 2 behind Gentry. That doesn't ensure that he would have instant success as a starter (remember Stratton's first years) but he definitely has the skill set to do it.

I've never said Holder wasnt a SP in HS. In all my talks with his HS coach whom I know fairly well, he always talked of Gentry on the mound and Holder as a hitter. And you obviously arent watching Holder pitch now- because he isnt throwing 3 pitches for strikes and why he has an ERA of 3.50

Personally, I don't want to force some guy who's been closing his whole career for us and is struggling a bit right now for him into the starting role. I think that's a recipe for disaster, the same as I thought putting Caleb there last year was when he wasn't ready- and we knew Caleb could go that many.

Put Ross there for now and let it play out.

He didn't even become our closer until the 8th SEC series last season. I wouldn't mind Ross starting but I want Holder to log more innings. Situations like Fridays 7th are when we need Holder.

Exactly. We brought him in the 7th today and he did well. We've saved holder too much so far.

I'm still not ready to throw him into the starting role right now with the way he is playing.

He has the tools, and he seems a little unsure of himself- a bit like Caleb was last year. Let him come in an earlier relief role if needed, I just don't want to see him trotting out there for 4-5 innings when he hasn't been doing that in a while. Especially when he is not doing what he'd like to be doing now.

Cohen today: "I think we can find ways to get him in the game earlier when the game could be won or lost"

Will James, always on the cutting edge.
