According to Amelia Rayno, the college basketball beat writer for the Minnesota Star Tribune,Tubby Smith did not know that he was no longer the Gophers’ head coach until CBS Sports’ Jeff Goodman broke the news. Rayno’s sources says the coaching staff was planning to meet with the administration this afternoon regarding Tubby’s future at Minnesota, and if he was indeed already fired, he had not been notified.

Wow... Win a game in the tourney and get fired.

Has that ever happened before? I know people have lost a game and gotten fired..

Wish you'd have put smith in the title. Thought that Jameon had been dismissed.

People are very opinionated about Tubby one way or another. Hate him or love him.

I don't honesty know what to believe about him. He won a title with Kentucky, but his Minnesota years were pretty average. Is he really that great or is he part of a laundry list of coaches who made a Final Four once and disappeared into average and sometimes above average teams? He's been able to get talent, look at Minnesota, but can't always put it together. Sounds familiar.

In today's world ...

If Pat Forde's article is accurate about putting out feelers about the Auburn job, he probably had it coming.

Tubby's has always subscribed to the theory that its best to go job hunting while you have one. Nothing wrong with that, but you have to be willing to suffer the consequences if your boss finds out you are doing it.

It is the agents that are out making the calls for the coaches. That's part of their job and Tubby's firing is a great example 'why' they do it. Get to the dance 3 out of 6 years and get fired. Unreal.

Tubby was very good in his own right, I just don't think he could have

that type of success anywhere. His years at Minnesota gave him plenty of time to prove otherwise, he couldn't.

Especially considering the conference he coached in. As bad as the sec was this year, the big 10 was that good. Florida is the only team in the sec that would've made tourney in their conference.

Right, but Tubby doesn't subscribe to today's techniques.

Okay?

Right, but Tubby doesn't subscribe to today's techniques.

Please explain. Tubby has an agent, Ricky Lefft, just like EVERY OTHER basketball HC. It's a 'game' and Tubby plays just like every other HC.

UM AD Teague is under the impression that he can go out and get an "up and coming" HC. He is rolling the dice big time. He has to buyout Tubby and spend some serious $$ for a new coach.

Meanwhile, Tubby took over a 'scandal ridden' program, kept it out of NCAA crosshairs, and went to the NCAAT 3 out of 6 years. When Tubby was signed, UM promised to build a new practice facility and improve Williams Arena. Neither happened. UM is actually in a worse position than Mississippi State was last year, basketball wise. Consider Minn relative BB position in a conference with with ... Ohio State, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Mich, Mich State, Iowa, Purdue, Penn State, Nebraska & Northwestern.

That group had 7 teams in the dance and 4 of 16 left to play. They still have a 1, 2, 3, & 4 seed still left.

This will be interesting to watch.
