I have a new teenager in my home, and we are letting her stay home alone while running errands and such. She does not have a cell phone and will not for a long time, but she needs a way to be able to easily call us or 911.

I need suggestions for an inexpensive telephone that will work through WiFi. I really don’t care for an Alexa-type device, if all possible.

I think an old cell phone even without a SIM card can call 911. If you have an old iPhone pretty sure you can make a FaceTime call over WiFi as well (or an iPad that doesn’t have cellular data)

Google search "VoIP" and see if that is what you are looking for. Don't know anything about them, but Cisco makes sells them starting at $25.

You said you dont like Alexa

But thats probably the easiest option. I don't know if it will call 911, but our kids (9 and 7) call us on ours if we leave the house to go for a walk or something. Works great.

Use the WhatsApp app on a cheap/old smartphone. Uses internet to make calls, send voice messages and text. Free. I have used it to talk to friends internationally.

Not sure what provider you have, but a smart watch may be an option too. They’re typically around $10/mo to add to your existing plan, and they come with a lot of parental controls that allow you to decide exactly what it can or can’t do

The benefit for the kid is getting a cool new watch. Benefit for the parents is GPS tracking and knowing that she can get in touch with you or 911 in the case of an emergency

If you have an iPhone, she can facetime or call you from her ipad. Probably can call 911 too.

Don't know about that

We just have the little "dots" around the house. I love it. I can walk the dog or go to the neighbors house and still be in touch.

These things are like $20 or so.

I've got an old Galaxy cell phone and it will call 911 like all cell phones will and I have an app called Dingtone that allows me to text and call for free using home wifi. I use it when I'm working from home and calling customers that I don't want to give my personal cell phone out to

OOMA. Mine cost me about -80 bucks to purchase on Amazon. Costs me about 5 bucks a month after to have a home phone, answering machine, unlimited long distance, can forward or check messages online, don't have to give out my cell phone number instead i give out this home phone #,now. It is great. All you need is to plug it in to your router, or you can get the WIFI one and put it anywhere.

you just buy the device, hook it up to internet, and then plug any regular phone in to the thing. That way you can call home and reach her, she can reach you, and she can call the cops or emergency if she needs to. Just get a cheap regular cordless phone with a few satellites and it can be in several rooms.
