honest assesment of hire, if gran is the guy.

This is more of the same, and by that, I mean this is another hire that has potential but does not enamor me...now, that doesn' t mean he won' t turn out great, and Im glad he comes with lots of experience, but i am of the personal belief that Stoops, and UK football can ill afford to make anything but a grand slam hire at this point.
In fact, this has always been my beef with Barnhart, and UK football in general. Other Sec schools go out and do what it takes to get the creme of the crop, while we throw stuff at the wall and hope it sticks. Again, not trying to bash Gran, and he could even turn out to be just what the dr ordered, but he is a gamble...Personally, I was just hopin, and have been hoping for 20 years that we would finally go out and make a big time hire that puts our money where our mouth is...instead, i guess well wait and see.

If i may ask..who would you see as a grand slam hire??? There are a bunch of coaches moving around due to head coaches being fired.. Sometimes your better off getting a solid experience oc then taking a shot at a dawson, or helton!!
Not sure there is a proven oc like brown, riley available with all these new coaches hiring...

I like adding an older assistant, I like that he knows OH and could help SFL. Would love to add the QB coach from SCjr now.

Any hire is a gamble. SC just hired Muschamp, most people would say that was a gamble. UT hired Jones and some people said that was a gamble. Kirby Smart has never been a HC and at UGA is a gamble. Mizzou's new coach is a gamble.

You're expecting a "Grand Slam" when there are no men on base.

No idea as to what Gran is capable of doing with this roster next season, but it will be important that he gets that offense to look competent fast. This program can no afford to have the offense look like pure $#!+ for yet another season under Stoops.

Hell, some people saying anything positive on this board could be a gamble.
Amen.
It seems I often forget that we have bottomless coffers, a strong, winning tradition, top-notch facilities and all the peripherals that make a program that can get anyone it so desires. How dare people be realistic and grounded in their demands and expectations or be satisfied with things that don't satiate our every whim and desire.

Sometimes I think this fan base gets exactly what it deserves.

One thing for sure. Gran will improve the offense. write it down. Hinshaw coming also, makes this a home run hire for me.

You're making the assumption a "Grand Slam" hire would come here over other open big 5 jobs or head coaching gigs. We could throw millions and every benefit possible to someone and they still not accept the job.

HBCYB is furtively searching Google for the top offenses in 2015 and looking up their OCs. Be careful - UC is pretty high on that list...

Yeah, I'd like to know who others would want as OC if not Gran. And give me a name(s) without having to consult Google or Wikipedia. Truth is most on here couldn't name 5 OCs if their lives depended on it.

He's an experienced coordinator with some established success at the position. He's coached at a lot of successful programs so he should know what a well run football organization looks like. And he's someone CMS should work well with given their history. I guess that's about as close to a grand slam as we're going to get at this point.

I read until you said "other SEC schools do it," and then I realized that right now we are not other SEC schools in football. So it's easy to see why we don't get the top assist or Head coaches.

This would be a good hire. Name a gran slam hire

This is so easy,

1) We call Chip Kelly, and offer him 10 million dollars to be OC
2). Get rid of Elliot and have Bill Cower coach defense....open up the checkbook.
3) Frank Beamer would be a grand slam Special Teams coordinator and would certainly come if the offer is right.

The only thing holding us back is Mitch not caring about football.

Have we ever tried throwing these millions??? Not to my knowledge. When you are behind everyone else, especially as long as UK has been in the sec, catching up requires we do even more than other programs. I think if we are serious about competing, we offer whatever it takes, and frankly, we have enough money to make offers that cannot be refused. Otherwise, it' s crossing our fingers and hoping we get lucky( like what happened with Brooks.)

So did Georgia make a "grand slam hire" with Kirby Smart who has zero HC experience?
Did S. Carolina make a "grand slam hire" with Will Muschamp who failed at Florida?
Did you consider Jim McElwain a "grand slam hire" when hired at Florida?
Was Derek Dooley "the creme of the crop"?
Pretty well shoots your claim out of the water.

Here, I'll list the coaching hires in the past 10 years that weren't gambles...
1. Nick Saben @ Alabama
2. Urban Meyer @ Ohio St
That's it, that's the list.

To whom are we making these "can't refuse" offers? Do you think the teams that currently employ them can't match/exceed any offer that UK makes? I still would like your list of "grand slam" hires.

Do you know that we haven't?
Will paying just anyone more money make them a better coach?

Honestly don't know if it matters who we hire if we continue to have awful QB and O-line play. I think Gran would be a good hire, but if Barker doesn't improve a lot from what we saw last year then we're going to be in trouble regardless of who our OC is. Fortunately, he was a freshman so there's definitely potential for improvement considering how young he is.

Also, i love how several of the posters making fun of this post were saying similar things when i complained about joker becoming hciw, and subsequently, hc. Its always 2 more years at Uk, then another mediocre hire, then, "its gonna take time" etc etc etc. And again, maybe gran works out. Just doesnt show the commitment i was hoping for.

I could be wrong but I think that if some of the negative posters would read his bio, they wouldn't be as negative about this hire. His offense in 2013 was the most prolific offense in program history at Cincinnati, was associate head coach at Florida state, coached many years in the SEC, and has been a really successful career as a special teams coach. The list of running backs that he's had over the years is real impressive. I just don't think UK could have done any better than this hire, considering that we don't have a very good tradition in football.
