On the other side, I hope he is paying attention to the recent collective NIL moves with Conagra and the university of Arky, Auburn's NIL collective build, and the other schools like UL who have obviously passed us in NIL ability.
I get both sides.
Economic side says the money is too good to pass up.
Game day experience and management says hold up, let’s think about this.
Yes, people drink at tailgate prior show up buzzed if not drunk. Sure, but that’s manageable.
Selling alcohol allows those tailgaters to stay drunk and introduces the opportunity for more people who don’t tailgate/pregame to get drunk. Then you throw in all the 21+ students. **** gets taken to the next level quick.
University would have to increase security, police, and EMS presence.
Then you take into account the experience of fans.
More beer and more money for NIL sounds great until you’re getting thrown up on, are seated behind some buzzed shirtless slobs who won’t sit down, your kid or wife gets bumped into and has stuff spilled on, you get wrapped up in some sort of argument or altercation with some drunks, you get rear ended leaving the stadium, etc…

Everyone that wants to get drunk and go into the game, does so. Everyone that wants to drink in the game, does so.

Sell the product. If someone is unruly, then you punish them, not everyone who wasn't.

Barnhart is a hypocrite. He isn't strictly enforcing his morality to the entire stadium. Just to the poors in regular seats.
This is pretty much it. This season, we had fans in front of front us for the USC game drunk when they arrived. They somehow snuck cans of beer into the game so they continued to drink. First time I've seen that, but go down the steps of Commonwealth at the end of the games and it's littered with empty plastic bottles. I see both sides of the arguments for and against alcohol sales however, I would lean toward selling it.
I am 47 years old and have much more important things to do than drink to excess. I enjoy a beer or two on occasion but that is it at this point. Go ahead and attempt to stereotype others Karen. You seem to excel at that.

Depends on what they want to drink. If it’s beer it’s difficult to smuggle in more than 1 or 2 beers, then you need to keep them cold. It’s easy to bring in a flask.
It isn't free. It is alcohol sales and like many have said they already sell to the rich in the club seats which is a huge double standard.

Gate security has been beefed up over the years and I imagine will continually be beefed up and improved. Heard somewhere the stadium was going to install metal detectors at some point.
Its undoubtedly a discussion that the athletic department and university have all the time. I’m sure some people argue for it and others argue against it. At this point, with every passing year the media money and bowl payouts are so big and ever growing I think the economic argument for loses weight.
We needed beer money 15 20 years ago to help pay for a coach, facilities, resources…now we don’t. We’re in a bowl every year, we‘re getting better players, facilities have improve, we’re competing in the east give or take a couple plays n injuries here and there.
Golden Rule ...always has been and probably always will be. "Them that's got the Gold, make the rules.
Maybe the 'rich' are better and demonstrate that by maintaining their dignity and actions, than the 'non-rich'.
And those that have the Gold usually have done the right things and shown the good sense to have gotten the Gold.

And again you are making another assumption since the "non-rich" have never had the opportunity to purchase alcohol and see how they act at the games. The rich have and I have seen plenty of falling down drunk in the club sections.

City of Knoxville was maybe a year late. Remember how ugly it got in the game with Ole Miss last year? Golf balls, mustard bottles, etc. being thrown on the field and at coaches and players.
I don't think so. I bet there are literally thousands of empty mini bottles collected after games. People get in whatever they want. Plus by law noone can be served if they are visibly intoxicated or if the person serving has reason to think they're already too intoxicated.
Yes, contrary to your utter BS argument, the non-rich have many opportunities to purchase alcohol at games, in that other teams play football. Check out your famous 'non-rich' at UT, etc, and watch them falling all over themselves, throwing things onto the field, and being drunks. I really doubt the majority of those folks are 'rich'.

The fear mongering about a hampered game day experience due to allowing beer sales is without any evidence. Have any of the boxes, suites, or other seats that have had access to alcohol seen an uptick in violence or unruliness? Nope.
If there are beer sales in the stadium I’ll happily throw down $20-$30 bucks for two or three beers. I can support the school and my love of beer—win-win. Besides, any flask can easily fit 10+ beers worth of alcohol in it with any strong bourbon. The people that overindulge have nothing stopping them now. Having to wait in a beer line every time you want a drink may actually help some people sober up rather than hitting the flask any time they want.

Far from a prude, but alcohol sells at a college football game isn't a good idea. Only a matter of time before some drunk fan jumps on the field, gets in aplayers face and gets stomped. Kid is in trouble, and we both know it will happen.
