Let's take a break from the banter of the below thread of backhanded compliments and derision of DNF and her(?) throngs of fans.

Can someone, anyone, Cavalier or Bulldog, or UVA Apologist RocketDawg, explain to me this Hoo business? I'm completely in the dark.

I believe someone called them a bunch of 'wahoos' (as a derogatory remark), they picked it up and ran with it. Or something like that.

If that's really the truth, I can't say I don't admire that in a way. I'll just be more surprised that it is the truth because you posted it. I think these HOO's have your blood boiling more than anyone else on the board, Good-Dawg.

Yea, I would say Good Dawg has been quite extreme, but I like that better than the RocketDawg "let me hold your hand and help you through these harsh comments" approach.*

The big mistake opposing fans make is: coming over here, registering, then immediately insulting one of our traditions. Those people in our outfield aren't there just to be seen, and cooking away. Most are pretty damn smart.

Yeah RocketDawg is being stupid. Calling me as annoying as a 13 year old doesnt make our fan base seem any more mature. Maybe RocketDawg should realize that they have given us a reason to not like UVA. I don't remember going to their board and immediately attacking their most beloved traditions.

I'm not 100% sure which story is true, but the one I heard is that students used to get drunk and slide down a muddy hill when it would rain and yell "Wahoo!" while they were doing it. I also heard that they got the name from Wahoo being a fish that can drink twice it's weight in liquid. Liquid being alcohol for student Wahoos.

In the last year I had similar feelings about Alabama, Ole Miss, and Northwestern in football, and I had similar feelings about the Vandy series a couple months ago. Their fans feel the same way about this weekend for their team.

Just part of being a fan. At least you're not on their site riddling off Virginia stereotypes - whatever they may be. "Why don't you go try some long military drills off a short pier?" I got nothin'.

Did a little 15 second search, and this is what I came up with from a website. Legend has it that Washington and Lee baseball fans dubbed the Virginia players "Wahoos" during the fiercely contested rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890's. No doubt this was a reference to the carp of the same name found in the waters of Virginia which is capable of retaining a prodigious amount of liquid to increase its size and fend off enemies. By 1940 "Wahoos" was in general use around the grounds (campus).
Today the University faithful or "Hoos" for short, embrace and celebrate the "Wahoos" spirited capacity to prevail as their athletic teams continue the proud tradition of success and achievement at UVA.

Alright it's settled then, UVA is called the Wahoos because they can drink an abnormal amount of Zima or Chardonnay.

This is correct. I dated a girl that was a third generation wahoo. Other fun fact. At one point Virginia had the longest losing streak in D1 football and their stadium is Scott Stadium. Not to be confused with Scott Field.

Yeah... I ran right away from your drivel. You all don't know a comment from a cut. I'd love to party down there but.... as I said DURING the game I saw people lighting up grills smoke billowing from down there. Any self respecting griller can't possibly be watching the game and whatever he has on the grill at the same time. OH wait... maybe MSU fans can and I was mistaken.

You sure you didn't graduate from UVA? Us fans who did not graduate from UVA are the base of our fan base. It surely isn't a bunch of tie wearing whiners who only come to games to be seen. I'll tell you the same as I tell those self righteous pricks. I AM A UVA FAN, I HAVE BEEN FOR 45+ YEARS. I was accepted to UVA but because I was the son of a single parent I had to go to a Jr. college and eventually get my degree from a cheaper school. Doesn't make me any less of a fan. I went to football camp at UVA when we sucked even worse in football than we do now (pre George Welsh) and I grew up 8 miles from VT and NEVER dreamed of being a VT fan. Get over it. I"ve had season tickets for years, support UVA in everything and am a fan.... just not an alumni. Are all those 14K at MSU baseball games, alumni? I bet not.

As a baseball fan you should realize that there are breaks between innings and that pitching changes due occur.
