Houston looks like they may be tough...

Just watched a CUSA season preview on CBSC. They have a lot of offense coming back, including a QB that chunked it for 5000 yards last year. I know its CUSA but that can't be good for our questionable secondary.

But they're more than beatable... As a USM grad, I saw them a couple of times live, and their offense, assuming is the same one they ran when Kolb was there, is very, very simple. They relied a lot on soft man coverage and would nickle and dime their way down the field, so hopefully, we'll throw some zone blitzes and such at them to throw them off. I think we're probably equal talent wise... So with us being at home, I'd give us the slight edge... But i definitely wouldn't be surprised to see us lose.

I think they were second in the nation in total offense last year, so they will be more than tough. I hate to say it, but I hope no State fans are chalking this game up as a sure win. We could very easily lose this game.

As usual, I'd be more than happy to be wrong and have us blow them out by 30.

CUSA teams in total defense for 2008

41. ECU
43. UCF
57. Memphis
65. USM
74. Tulsa
84. Tulane
100. Houston
102. Marshall
106. UAB
111. Rice
115. UTEP
118. SMU

8 of the 12 defenses are ranked #74 or worse, 6 of those are ranked #100 or worse. I made the same point when we played UCF in the Liberty Bowl and people were predicting that Kevin Smith would run for 250 yds and 3 tds against us. I said there was no way based on this very reason. For the most part, CUSA is defense poor. Not saying we should chalk it up as a W mind you.

Yep. In 2007, CUSA had the NCAA's top two running backs. Kevin Smith at UCF had 2,567 yards rushing, averaging 183 yards per game and 5.7 yards per rush, and Matte Forte at Tulane had 2,127 yards rushing, averaging 177 ypg and 5.9 yards per carry. We played them both, and held them to 119 yards (on 35 carries) and 47 yards.

and a tough team to defend. They will be a high octane offense that is not necesarily used to an SEC defense. But it WILL REQUIRE a decent amount of points on the board
