Last night in Jackson, a fan yelled out "go to hell ole miss". Mullen paused, and looked up a little bit strangely. For a second I thought he might have been offended at that language in this setting. I'm still not sure he wasn't.

Maybe he's just unaware of that "tradition". I bet people don't yell "go to hell Florida State" at Florida press conferences.

I'm not much on getting autographs or meeting people just to shake their hand but I was caught up in the moment. After the rally, I went up to Coach Dan and asked him to sign the "Dan is the Man" tee shirt I had picked up for my 8 year old son. While he was signing the shirt, I looked around to make sure no kids were close enough to hear me and in a low voice I leaned over and said "Coach, we really need you to kick Ole Miss's a$$
." Lame and very much out of character for me. He finished signing the shirt and took my hand and shook it with both of his and in a nice and courteous fashion said "They're just a school north of here... AND, I would really appreciate your not using that kind of language in here." I placed my hand on his shoulder and said "Thank you so much coach and good luck." He thanked me and I moved on.

I am a Christian and was totally embarrased by my actions (word). When I got to the car, I just grinned real big, bowed my head, and thanked God that we have a young man who seems to be of tremendous character leading our football program and influencing our youth. I'm 42 and he's already had an influence on me.

I hope this means something to each of you. </div> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table>

....needed to be taken outside and beaten severely.

The "GO TO HELL OLE MISS!" guy and the "WHAT COLOR ARE THE PANTS GOING TO BE?" guy would be at the top of my list.

I just can't muster up the required level of hate for the Ole Miss folks anymore. Sure I don't want to lose to them, but I realized at some point in the seven losing seasons that playing Ole Miss was a hell of a lot more fun when both teams were good. If more fans of both schools would get that through their thick skulls we might all have a lot more fun in the fall. If collusion works for the corporate world, why not college football?

That's good stuff. Character matters to me and I am glad Mullen may pick up where Croom left off.

Last night Mullen did talk a little about that. He said champions are champions all the time, meaning winning isn't something you turn on when you walk on the field. He talked about education and checking up on the players to make sure they're in class, etc.

but at least this time the character stuff is playing second fiddle to the concept of winning.

of course we want players who are good people, don't get arrested, and go to class. those are all good things. but first we need them to play some damn football and kick people's asses. the coaches can do the rest to keep them in line.

i am so glad winson churchill is gone.

some of our fans' obsession with Ole Miss. It just seems like some of our fanbase would rather see Ole Miss lose than us win. That may be overstating it, but it sure seems that way. I'll never forget the 2006 Tulane game when our fans cheered a 31-17 Ole Miss loss while we are losing 32-7. That still ranks up there as one of the moments I was most embarassed in our fanbase.

I like beating Ole Miss, but I do not hate them. I laugh at their fanbase at times, I enjoyed watching Orgeron's antics when he was there, but I do not hate them. I'd rather pull for State than aGAINST Ole Miss. Call me crazy

hate Ole Miss mentality. Maybe in was inbreed into State fans because we sucked so bad and Ole Miss fielded some good teams back in the day. I would prefer to see both teams ranked #1 & 2 in the country and beat their asses in the Egg Bowl then hate on Ole Miss with them at 5-7 and us at 3-9.

I think it's a problem with both fanbases where we seem to think we can't both be good at the same time. I enjoy cheering against other SEC schools just as much as the next guy, but I've also noticed that our athletic departments both seem to be more motivated when the other is doing well. In 2004 and 2006, when we beat you in "the battle for 4-7 and the battle for 4-8", it was nice to get a win, but it really didn't make me feel better about the fact that we had an awful season.

Still I don't see where the mindset comes that we have to bring the other MS school down in order to be successful. What about bringing down LSU, Auburn, and Alabama instead? Maybe that would help us better.

they are our main rival, and you're supposed to not like them, and they're not supposed to like us.

For about a week after the Egg Bowl there wasn't one day that someone didn't come up to me at work and say "45-0". Now, it's about how you handle it. I could have done what some Bama fans do and calmly go to my car and bring back a sawed off shotgun and laid waste to them, I could have done what some do on GP and called them classless and poor sports and then run off like a *****, or I could have done this- which is how I handled it- I said "Yeah, that was a complete meltdown, but we're looking for a new coach right now, and I think that we're going to get a really good one."

And as far as Go to Hell Ole Miss, that's an old tradition, although I don't hear it as much. But it's no worse than Bama doing Rammer Jammer and telling Auburn that they just beat the hell out of them, and it's no worse than the Hey Song that we do where we tell people that we just beat the hell out of them, and it's no worse than the PG-13 version of Hotty Toddy. The difference is the context of the situation- stands during a football game, OK. Press conference- Not OK. Going up to the coach who you don't know personally and he doesn't know you and saying that you want him to kick someone's ***.- Not OK.

And as far as press conference decorum- You want to know what our uniforms are going to look like? E-mail GB. Don't yell out WHAT COLOR ARE OUR HELMETS GONNA BE? at a freaking press conference.

State/Ole Miss is a rivalry, but I think it's bad to go too oveboard about and it's not good to not acknowledge it. We have to find a happy medium.

but I hate Ole Miss.Come hang out with my Rebel kin and their ilk, and I fugging A guarantee you will hate them too.

It's like that ********** Bruiser. He'll fly here to defend all things Ole Miss. Ole Miss has never done anything low class or wrong while State is always humiliating their selves in some way, which they are quick to try to point out.
He will act reasonable at times, but put him with the rest of the typical Ole Miss fans and he will act just like them. Read his **** over on Nafoom sometime.

Tell us how you got your title again, there Bruiser.

Exactly my point. We both have that segment (a very large portion in fact) that believes only one school can be successful in Mississippi, so they see it as a competition between two schools, when in reality both schools can be successul, and it'd be better for us to spend our efforts on our own programs to try to make them better than all 11 SEC schools, instead of just 1.

You hit the nail on the head. A good example is my uncle. He is a big Mississippi fan and back in the day he used to go to all the games and get 2 tickets to the SECCG every year. Well, along comes 1998. We win the West and go to Atlanta. I'm a 10th grader at the time. My dad didn't have the money to get us tickets to go to Atlanta, and my uncle knew that. Do you think my Mississippi fan uncle offered to give my dad and I his tickets to the SECCG, or at the very least offered to take me with him to the SECCG? Hell no! He took his usually buddy who went with him every year who could pretty much care less about football. I love my uncle to death, he's family and done a ton for me through the years, but I'll forever be mad as hell about that. 17 Mississippi.

growing up in the 70's I had to deal with too many of them and their delusional talk about how they were so much better than us State fans. The hate just developed during that time of how they looked down upon us. Even during the 80's when it was apparent the 1960's were over and they were no longer relevant, they still did that stuff. And of course, standing there watching John Fourcade hold the ball up at us in the end zone after they beat us made me want to commit murder.

I'm not obsessed with anything Mississippi Rebel, but I do root for whomever they play that on any given day. Hearing that they lost does make me smile.
I dont judge our program based on theirs. Our program is about us doing anything we can to win. But hating them is a part of life.

I personally don't care what they do anymore. I have too much other stuff to worry about. I follow State athletics and other big games now and then. But I don't turn on their games, so I can cheer against them like I did growing up, in high school and college. Having said that, I don't like being around their fan base. They can be really obnoxious. Especially their sidewalk almuni who can't spell diploma, but feel the need to tell me what a redneck that I am. I guess as I put more years between myself and the players on the field. I don't look at it as such a rite of passage that our 18-22 year olds do well against their 18-22 year olds. I get more out of beating a ranked team in the big three sports than I do beating them. I would rather go 11-1 and lose to them than 1-11 and beat them. Maybe, it is just me.

observe: Underclassmen student section vs. upperclassmen student section

So there's one job we won't have to worry about Dan "trading up" to in the future.
