How do we return DWS atmosphere to 2009?

Knowing the athletic department reads the board, I'd like to see a few suggestions from the Pack on how to return the in-stadium atmosphere to 2009 Florida/Arkansas games. The expansion will certainly help and obviously winning is a huge factor. 2009 didn't feature a dominant football team but the atmosphere was the best it's ever been.

The excessive advertisements have a negative impact and that's well understood... dead horse and all. What would you like to see to bring it back to the 2009 year? What's missing? Few suggestions below:

1) I'd like to see more attention brought to every 3rd down. That starts with the PA announcer. He brings nothing to the table, no emotion or anything but I think he should be requested to put some emphasis on every defensive 3rd down. Last year I looked around on 3rd down and I'm pretty sure my section had no idea what was going on. Could also use the band here, use the same tune every time.

2) All advertisements that require fan involvement (Kiss Cam, Chicken Dance, Chevron Race) need to be moved to the 1st quarter. One of these would be played during the 4th quarter last year during a timeout. It was the perfect opportunity for the crowd to get into the game, yet everyone was watching the cartoon cars racing. It made zero sense.

3) I've always wanted to see the distribution of stick pom poms. I know it is Auburn/Alabama's thing but I think it would pick up pretty easily with those not ringing a cowbell. The ones they give out now kinda suck.

4) Something bigger has to occur at end of the 3rd quarter. For anyone that's gone to an Auburn game, you have seen their players go nuts with the student section before the start of the 4th. It gets the whole stadium going. We don't really acknowledge this point in the game, besides a few traditionalists throwing up 4 fingers.

The Arkansas game in DWS was 2010 and we honored Nick Bell's mom pregame, but I get what're you saying.

When we are on defense and it's 3rd down id love to hear the Harlem Shake. It's got a "crazy" vibe to it and kind of blends with the Psycho Defense mantra and all. I think the place would be LOUD and our d would feed off it. It cld be our 3rd down song, like Uga plays souldja boy

There is something about thunderstruck at a college football game.

For whom the bell tolls should be our obvious get the effff up on 3rd down song

Thunderstruck is good for after we score and are kicking off.

1- Band
2- Band
3- Band
4- Did I say band??

I think one of the worst things that happened was when the jumbotron basically replaced the band. Nothing wrong with piped in music, and it certainly has its place in building an atmosphere, but when I go to a football game I don't go for anything produced on a dadgum jumbotron. I think what I'm saying is that as great a thing as a jumbotron is....and now we have TWO of them..... I feel like we have created an atmosphere that ends up feeling artificial, because it IS artificial when the jumbotron steals the show. How pathetic is it when all I can do in the thrill of the game is endure a blaring jumbotron? I don't even feel inclined to yell/cheer because the jumbotron is playing something so loud I certainly can't compete with. I would much rather hear the band and let them pump up the audience.....we seem to have forgotten how to do that, because we have been taken over by the big Moo Tube. The jumbotron should ENHANCE the atmosphere, not become our identity. That's boring.

I can remember sitting in the stands pregame at Bryant Denney in 2012, the 7-0 "we believe" campaign..when Bama played Thunderstruck and the video board scrolling their accolades and the team ran out I instantly knew then we were about to get our *** handed to us terribly.

yes...thunderstruck needs to be on the playlist.

We should play the beginning of "Raise Up" by Saliva on big defensive 3rd downs. Just my opinion.

2009 was my first football season at State, and even though we lost... nothing in my mind will ever come close to the atmosphere during the UF game.

Sometimes we're going to have lackluster games. Sometimes we'll have big ones. In my opinion, there's nothing the gameday crew could have done to make that game as hyped as it was or if they could have done anything to ruin it.

But in general terms? They can 1. Fix the speakers. 2. Quit trying to swindle all the fans into buying **** they're not going to buy 100 times over with the same bad commercials.... I get it... those commercials keep the lights on... find anther source. 3. Quit trying to create inorganic excitement ("You say maroon! You say white!" "Exxon Mobile will give $100 to this 6 year old kid if he picks 1, 2, or 3 correctly!" "Watch these old people kiss!" "Watch these siblings squirm when the kiss cam comes to their section!") 4. Play bad *** highlight videos like the one in 2009.

Dear god... when I was a pledge saving seats and they played that 10 minute long highlight video like an hour to 30 minutes before kickoff I got amped. Everyone lost their **** when they showed JWS being lifted onto some players' shoulders each time, because I remember it was the first time JWS was associated with MSU since his ousting. Highlights through the years + Cristil's voice = great pregame.

When I was a football pa guy I would work the crowd with the mic on key downs but also would alternate between a barking dog, toiling funeral bells, the imperial death march, and the Friday the 13th theme on third downs. Even if the crowd didn't react initially they would go nuts when the music or sound effect kicked in. We have no one in the athletic department that understands working a crowd. I've offered multiple times to help but the good ol boy network is in full affect.

I will give credit the holder thing was a stroke of brilliance last year but it only works if winning. Something like thunderstruck or welcome to the jungle are great going into 4th qtr winning or losing. Again though you have to use the mic to work the crowd first and then after.

I remember the pa hiring was a sham but who'd this guy know to get that gig? I'd do it for free but only football. That's a big thing if you don't understand and love the sport you will suck at announcing it. You have to bring passion to the mic and not just crescendo the end of every word.

Completely agree with you. The athletic department is so business-minded with all the marketing and such that the PA move makes no sense. Everything should give add value to the gameday experience. The current PA announcer brings nothing remarkable. He needs to add something to the game and unfortunately he doesn't.

I agree. The 2009 UF game was 17'n nuts. It started with Dixon talking **** during the coin toss and both teams meeting at midfield. It only amped up when Banks housed one about 104 yards.

How about something as simple as the intro to Hell's Bells on big 3rd down plays.

Exactly. Doesn't need to be elaborate. It's just something simple that immediately pulls the fans into the play. There doesn't even need to be some big announcement to the fans like "Hey! here's our NEW tradition". Just make it a habit and we'll catch on pretty quickly.

Back during the Croom Error, Bully used to come out onto the field in front of the student section and dance to some hip hop music. It always got the students (or at least the ones who were still there) all worked up. Stuff like that is cool, and I wish they would do more of it.

1. Players come out to "Protectors of the Earth"
2. 17 "Thunderstruck". We are not Bama. "Hells Bells" would be a better song for us on 3rd down. Or Quiet Riot's "come on feel the noise". Iron Maiden's "Fear of the Dark" could work too.
3. Band has to play "Numa Numa" at least once every game. Also, much more emphasis needs to be placed on drum line. We need a Big10 style band at State. We are a land grant university and land grant universities are supposed to have a bad-*** drum corps in the band. The FMB sucks! It could be so much better.

We need to do this in the stadium. Utah State does this chant "I Believe That We Will Win" and it gets nuts!! I believe the cheerleaders need to get the stadium chanting this before the game and it will get the place rocking. I feel this will get us pumped up.

I agree with you sentiments and even that we should play some awesome songs like Metallica "Enter Sandman" like Va Tech does. I agree that the Florida game in 2009 was the most electric atmosphere, other than the 2007 Alabama game (when Anthony Johnson picked off JPW and Titus Brown sacked him to win the game) and 2009 or 2010 Arkansas game. I still remember when they actually played "Put On" by Yung Jeezy and it would pump me up before games. That's when they did the DPR at midfield and Florida came out and almost got into a brawl. Then Jonathan Banks made that place erupt with his 100yd INT that was causing the upper deck, where I was, to shake back and forth. My roomate heard the stands from the rear apartment at 21 Apartments outside his window. It was ELECTRIC!

USU does that chant to the drumline tapping their sticks on the rim of their snare drums. Our band would be completely out of tempo with the crowd. You would end up with the west side, the east side and the end zone all being on different timings.

Yeah, true, but something like this could be done with the cheerleaders all yelling at the same time and portion of the chant. I don't think we would have to use the band but I could be wrong. Also, the scoreboard could have some sound effect to keep them on timing or something. I'm just throwing out ideas but I think this is one of the best chants that would really PUMP me up before a game. I would love to see this in the Hump, btw, when we are actually doing good and packing the house.

USU stole it from Army, and since then USMNT stole and and now owns it... So I'm totally against robbing a twice robbed chant that is now world famous in relation to USA soccer.

If we're going to do that we might as well steal all the best cheers from all the best and most iconic teams. Who dat gonna beat them Saints? No! Who dat gonna beat them Dawgs!

Everything is being forced. Roll with it. When the AD gets out of the way of the crowd, something will happen on its own.

Or it won't. Which is still better than someone telling me that Ford sponsored for my side to yell "maroon." What happened to just showing up and cheering? 1 step at a time.

I always thought it would sound awesome

If we could get everyone in the stadium to ring the bells in unison w the drum beat of hells bells before the team ran out. Would sound wicked. i.e. Like your beating the drum with your cowbell to the rhythmic drumbeat at the beginning. Imagine 30,000 bells doing this. Would be something that no one else could replicate. Could use the jumbotron to keep everyone on beat. Would be the coolest thing in college football. Somebody that knows how to get stuff like this done, get it done.

Definitely agree that the bulk of the advertisements need to be done before the game starts instead of killing the crowd during key parts of games. The whole run-out sequence was awful last year as well, that really needs to be overhauled. Just as the crowd would get really into it, the band stops and they do the maroon-white cheer brought to you by "insert your name here". Is that really that best the athletic department can come up with? The more cowbell sketch has also been beat to death, come up with something new. It was funny the first time, now it's annoying.

Oh yeah, more flyovers would be nice especially if they were close to being on time.

But it's a lot easier to keep time when there are only 2600 fans in the stands.**

My feeling is that the key to a rabid crowd is that you pump them up at the very beginning and then never let up. Think about the crazy fanbases out there (Cameron Crazies, the Seattle Seahawks, LSU...) Those crowds stay pumped throughout the entire game and while that may be a little much to ask for us, the thing you absolutely can't do is continue to kill the vibe time and time again with horrible blaring commercials and stupid crowd games. This isn't the NBA. People don't need to be entertained by dance teams and games to have fun. The football game, itself, is the entertainment.

My formula would be as follows:

1) Get the students back to the games and make it clear to them they're going to be the heartbeat of the crowd
2) Pay a legitimate production team to put together some top notch pre-game video packages to air throughout the season. Include footage of MSU greats, highlight plays, wins against big teams). Seriously, imagine what a simple 2 minute video with guys like Smoot of Keffer would do to the crowd.
3) After you get the crowd going, don't let up. Blast music, get people ringing cowbells, and let the band play at every chance. Save the games and commercials for half time.

That's it...

Oh, well that and allow beer sales

Fewer commercials and quit doing the same thing every week.

Reminds me of my mom growing up. She would find something I really liked for breakfast, and then that was my breakfast till I got sick of it. We do the same thing with music and videos. We don't have to keep the same playlist for every game. And can we not create a highlight film during the season? Just because something was awesome in game 1 doesn't mean we should do it for game 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.
