How do you guys feel about Rula and Dampier meeting with Payne on their own?

doesnt hurt to see what former players think of prospective coaches- and it's good see them still care about the program so much

What if they had met with James Green? Rod Barnes? etc. Does the AD do what they want? If Byrne had been a yes man we'd have kept Croom and hired Raffo. It's not that it's Payne so much that concerns me. It's that other people are making the decisions. or May be.

It could work out, but that would be very concerning. We'd have Raffo and Croom if Byrne had been a yes man.

Once Strick got past his top choices and couldnt reel them in- he has interviewed some more guys- one of them was Payne. If Payne sold him, then so be it

If Stricklin were a "yes man" and therefore we would still have Croom if he had been the AD back then, why in the hell did he "retire" Stansbury?

It is quite a reach to be calling Stricklin a "yes man." Some people (not necessarily you, just people that are head over heals believing this) just need to take a step back, and let things play out. Off the top of my head, I can only think of two coaching hires Stricklin has made. Softball which appears to have been a great hire. If you haven't seen at all, they are competive with a few of the best teams in college softball. And women's basketball which I have no interest in or care about so I can't really judge it.

I would think it would be ignorant of Stricklin if he wasn't interested in getting an impression from a former player that knows what an excellent college basketball team is all about. Especially if Dampier were interested. I am sure he just likes getting other people's opinions so that he isn't duped by one seemingly impressive interview with a guy.

Either way, his hire could be great, or terrible, but we won't know for a couple of years. People would have thought Kevin Wilson was a homerun hire back when we got Dan Mullen, but by judging what has happened so far, I think Mullen could have pulled more than 1 win off of their schedule last year.

So all we know about Kenny Payne is he can recruit top talent to Kentucky. Let's take a step back and think about how difficult that is. Insert heavy sarcasm. Can he actually coach? TBD. Apparently David Rula thinks he can, which gives me GREAT comfort. Again, heavy sarcasm.

Let Scott do his job. Odds are most people reading and posting on here don't have athletic department experience from four schools before coming to MSU. You wanted stadium expansion, Scott is doing that. You wanted a "new direction" for the men's basketball team, done. Would you rather have LT back or Bruce Weber leading the team out of the tunnel?

I'd rather be with Adidas right now. The new "AdiZero" basketball shoes are a huge success. Adidas sponsors Baylor, Louisville, Cincinnati and Michigan. Those schools have the most popular uniforms/shoes in college bball right now. As far as Dampier goes I'm happy to hear that he is investing time and money back into MSU. He is the only NBA guy we have and look at how much just he has helped. Imagine if we had the amount of NBA players that UK, Duke and UNC had? Maybe Sidney will donate a couple Barnhills gift certificates to MSU next year.

I think Big Sid will be investing in Rosetta Stone next year.

and also like the fact that former players are taking this much time and effort to make sure we hire the right guy. This does, however, go against what many said on the board a few days ago that Stricklin was wanting to hire a guy that would get away from the AAU "game". If World Wide is involved in our program it will be as dirty as it gets.

Remember Payne is a former Oregon assistant and has lots of Nike ties. Enter in a year with Calapari and World Wide Wes and the guy probably has really strong connections in the dirty AAU basketball underbelly . At least we will be able to bring in the "talent"

heard Payne is harder on his players than Calipari and John Calipari doesn't take any slack. I think it would be a great hire and he would be a guy that can recruit and be a true leader. Nike would just be the extra benefit to help top things off.

it's hilarious (and not surprising) that people who stated Stans had no idea how to coach are now pushing Payne so hard. Par for the course.

Many? I seem to remember Peachbowl as the ring leader saying MSU was luke warm to Payne because of WWW and his AAU connections. Peachbowl didn't know who Payne was until I threw his name out on day 1 and he didn't know who WWW was until he googled Payne and Wesley's name popped up. <div>
</div><div>Now the walking cry for help is saying he thought the meeting in Atlanta with Payne was a good idea - implying that he knew about it. Problem with that is, about the time the meeting with Payne and WWW was occurring, the Peachy one was on here saying MSU was backing off because of WWW. In other words, he had no idea what was going on. And still doesn't. He's been wrong every step of the way. For instance:</div><div>
</div><div>The MSU job is very attractive. Wrong</div><div>MSU told Scoot Drew no, but offered his brother. Riiiiiiiight.</div><div>Two weeks into a search, MSU is now granting "courtesy interviews". LOL.</div><div>
</div><div>There is a reason this guy is a living train wreck. We get to see why every day.</div><div>
</div><div>And by the way, to your original point, Tony Barbie like the idea of Wesley funneling players his way when he ventured out on his own.</div><div>
</div><div>As HD6 asked the other day, how's that working out for him?</div><div>

I heard about it shortly afterwards- and this is why I made this post- http://sixpackspeak.yuku.com?topic=85903

Calm down, sit back, and watch...Adidas out, welcome back Nike! The Nike deal is worth a lot of money. By the way, Brett Just, the director of college coaches for CAA, scheduled the Payne interview with Stricklin for 1 hour, it lasted 2 hours. Just a little FYI.
