I think the man tried for the HR hire, but it just didn't work out. I know he worked his tail off, and I think this is a pretty good hire, especially if it was probably the 3rd choice.

We can say we'd rather have P******n, but I don't think what he did at Boise predicates what he could do in the SEC. . . I like that mullen has SEC experience. I'm not saying, I'd take him over a head coach, but nothing guarantees success. Mullen is a good fit.

He met all the criteria he was after. And I really didn't expect anyone from within the SEC, much less from UF, which is a plus.

Impossible to give an A but I think as far as what Byrne told us he was after, this is high B.

In the end probably a B. I would have gone with a A if he could have gotten him here now and not after the NC. Anyone know what we paid? That could change my rating.

I'd have given him an A+ if he'd have gotten Petersen, but this is such a nonMSU hire that it deserves a high grade. We are talking about one of the best up and coming coordinators in college football who has coached under one of the top 3 coaches in college football.

He meets the criteria Byrne laid out. There are no guarantees, but this is the type of hire we all wanted 5 years ago (Fisher). Now we have it.

And it can't hurt that he has coached a no. 1 pick in the draft, won a NC, coached a Heisman winner, and run basically the same offense Meridian ran.

Yes we all wanted Peterson, but it just didn't work. Now we got a guy familiar with every team and coach in our conference. Add to the fact that we get Urban next year at home.

A ( - ) = Upgrade to A ( + ) if we keep Core Recruits and Land either Bumphis and/ or Patterson Plus .... He does not have a STACHE

Top notch HC would be less of a gamble.

But I am quite stoked about this A- move following the F- coach we've had for 5 years.

B+ Good Hire. I don't think we could have gotten a bigger named coach. If we can get Wilson as OC I would move him up to an A...

...he just hired freakin' Florida's offensive coordinator.

Just about any A.D. anywhere would deserve an A for pulling that off (yet I give him a B+ because he raised the bar too high with the Petersen tease).

We hired a top assistant coach from arguably the top program in college football these days. He's had nothing but huge success anywhere he's been. Maybe not a home run, but at least a double and maybe a triple.

....the problem is that the Petersen hire would've been like that kid in school that got so many bonus points he finished with a 115 average, so on the surface it skews it.

Guys- it wasn't long ago we were dreaming of this day. No more Polk, no more Croom. Tears of joy are starting to trickle down my face.

He tried for the proven head coach but you can't force someone to take the job. A top coordinator deserves an A- for a down school like ours.

Looking only at this single hire, I give it a B. We didn't get the guy we wanted, but we got one high on the list. And that list didn't look anything like LT's would have.

That said, maybe we all let our expectations of GB get out of hand (guilty as charged). Overall, looking back at the history of MSU football, Mullen gets an A when compared against most of his predecessors.

1. It was professionally done.
2. It looks like Byrne actually interviewed multiple people.
3. We will have an offense worth watching.
4. High energy coach without all the crazy normally associated with it.

When this search started, the first name I thought of was Petersen....why, 23-3 record and proven head coaching experience.....That's the only reason I liked him....Big Name Hire....would have brought the spotlight to MSU... Would he have continued his win streak here?? probably not. Whole different conference.

What I like about Mullen is his SEC experience...maybe he doesn't have head coaching experience but I think his overall football experience makes up for that...especially coming from a program as strong as Florida. So, his advantage over Petersen:

Experience in the SEC....he knows the teams
Experience recruiting in the SEC....maybe he'll bring some FL recruits.
Explosive offense...with Russell at the helm, surely we'll see that here.
Offense ranked 1st in SEC and 3rd in nation...he should get us above that 100 ranking.
Seven years experience as a QB coach...that should help us draw some tip notch QBs

I think he'll bring some great things to State!!

Now, I'd like to see GB throw some jack at an assistant recruiting coordinator to help Felker. Someone that could sell sand to a Saudi, a hula skirt to a Siberian or a mullet wig to GS.

Excited to hear who all will be on Mullen's staff!!!

That may seem a bit harsh, but he didn't close the deal he set out to make.

I agree, plus he is a consensus top 5 coordinator. I see huge upside.

This man can coach and he is young. Tyler Russell for Heisman 2009!... (or 2010, that depends on if Tebow stays in college)
