How does Derek Jeter keep winning Gold Gloves?

Ryan Sandberg was similar at 2nd base in his day (plus ankle high infield grass).

Somehow Mark McGwire won one at some point. So, Jeter is hardly the most egregious offender.

Guys like Jeter will win the award out of respect until some phenom comes along. Plus he's white and black which cancels out many qualified Latinos. Most people don't know that.</p>

He's also the Captain. Not onlydto all those schmucks up there vote for him, but people that don't watch vote for him because, he's "Derek Jeter." I never implied he deserved it.

that his range has decreased a little, he still led the league in FP%. It's not like he sucks. He still makes good plays at least once a game. I mean to this point, the greatest MLB franchise ever (by far) feels that he's an integral part of their team.

I will say this- you don't realize how good he is until you see him in person. He is one of those players that it's hard to appreciate what he is doing because he makes everything look easy, and if you just watch him on TV, you can't really tell just how far he goes to get to ground balls and then make a pretty tough play look routine.

Has he lost a step? I would say so, but that's still better than most shortstops in the game right now.

He has the best range of any shortstop that I have ever seen in person.

And also, I'm not sure of very many shortstops this year that really you could say clearly deserve it over him. I think you could make a case for Elvis Andrus of the Rangers. Just out of curiousity, who would you have given the award to?

This is dead on. I never appreciated fully what Jeter can do until I saw him in person. He makes difficult plays look easy on a routine basis.

Can't get to the ball because of poor range, doesn't count against you.... Atom balls only

He led the league in FP% and had the fewest errors; six in 151 games. I watched everyone of their games and just don't remember ever saying he wasn't good defensively (or deserving of a GG).

or Alexei Ramirez.. yeah they made more errors but their range is so much better that they can get to more balls and actually have a CHANCE to field them.

Come on Todd. That's a ridiculous statement, especially for a (I think) Cards fan. Jeter's range has never been his primary asset. What he does well is: 1) not screw up; 2)make an occasional spectacular play; and, 3) hit timely. Before you rail against that as sacrilege, let me remind you that those 3 qualities are shared by a number of hall of famers, and I think Jeter should be mentioned in that group.

But I maintain my point above which is that, right now,he's old, good, and not so rangy. All of this at once minimizes errors and garners the "respect" vote. And without a phenom to take his spot he'll win the Gold Glove. Sort of the idea that to beat the champ, you have to knock the champ out.

he can't get to balls that other guys can get to so he has fewer chances to make errors.. fielding % isn't the best way to judge infielders.

Jeter has never been the best defensive SS in baseball at any point in his career. He makes the plays that he's supposed to make along with an occasional spectacular play.. and he doesn't make plays that other guys do.. because he can't.
I will never deny his clutchness when it comes to hitting (especially in the playoffs) but his defense has never been more than good in my book.

but refer to my other post about Jeter's range. Even if Jeter was a playwood cut out standing on the infield, only having six errors is outstanding for a Major League shortstop. It's not uncommon for a pretty good fielding shortstop to have 20 errors or so over the course of the year. Jeter has to get credit for the plays he did make. And you also have to take into account that Robinson Cano has outstanding range as well, and for a third baseman, A-Rod can cover a lot of ground there. I'm sure there are times that Jeter defers to those players because it is an easier play for them- which is what a shortstop is supposed to do in those situations.

Have you seen him play in person?

I agree that Jeter isn't flashy, that's pretty much exactly what I'm saying after all when I say he makes plays look easy.

Ozzie Smith, I think's who you're refering to when you say Cardinal's fan, was the best I have ever seen defensively all-around. No doubt about that. He made the Hall of Fame almost solely on defense alone, which should tell everyone something right there. Now, I have to confess this about Ozzie- I have seen him play in twice- once in 1985 when I was all of six or seven, and then in 1996 when Ozzie was 40 or something like that and sharing time with Royce Clayton. Ozzie was extremely quick on his feet, and he also had extremely quick hands. He was such a tremendous athlete, and he was all of 5'10" or so.

And I will say this- Ozzie's range was as good at least as Jeter's, if not better.

Now, that said, just because Jeter isn't flashy, it doesn't mean he shouldn't win the Gold Glove. I don't disagree with your three points about Jeter at all, so I'm not sure why you would think that I would rail against that. That said, Jeter's defense is the most underrated part of his game. And in part it's because he does those other things well, and it takes the focus away from his defense a little bit- not that that is a bad thing.

So, I will just say this in conclusion- I know what I saw, and the fact that I have seen both and am not a Yankees fan should be even the more reason to believe me. Because even if his range isn't as good as the Wizard's, it's pretty darn good.

when I say that he makes spectacular plays more than occasionallstated I stated, I watched every game this year and have seen him in person. He's not as bad defensively as people like to make out, and the range thing is greatly misused in his case.
