How does this defense compare to 99's?

The 99 D would get a lot more 3 and out's. They could completely dominate teams and make them look silly. Once in a while, they'd hold a team to NEGATIVE yards rushing.

The 2010 defense is better coached and effective as far as not allowing points goes (face it...that's the only thing a defense really has to do). But the 99 defense was dominating and scary. There wasn't any bend but don't break stuff. It was smash mouth push you backwards all day long.

Was it 99 that Homer no-shoes would run the two complete defensive lines on alternating series? Those guys were always fresh and had some real bad attitudes. I think it was Couch, or whoever that was Kentucky had at QB under Mummy that said he hated playing us more than anybody because you just knew on every play some big guy was going to knock your dick in the dirt whether you had the ball or not.

we were penalized a lot if I recall. It didn't matter because we knew with most teams that we could 3 and out them as we pleased if we stepped up.

We had two shut down corners, we had two SEC caliber defensive lines, Barrin Simpson was one of the best LB's that I have ever seen, and is probably going to be a Canadian Football League Hall of Fame player. He was just a tremendous leader, and really kept that team together. Losing him was a big reason why we started to decline rapidly on defense, in my opinion. And then we had some very good safeties that liked to hit, and could run.

This year, we had some very good linebackers, and I think Manny did a great job this year. To me, he's almost like a cross between Joe Lee Dunn and Ellis Johnson in that he is aggressive and creative like Joe Lee (in his heyday), and at the same time, we're very fundamentally sound like we were with Ellis Johnson. Manny is probably superior to those two when it comes to making adjustments in game, though.

Yes, everybody our 2-deep at DL could start on any other SEC team. They rotated throughout the game and dominated all game long.

Playing rough and tough was the goal. Coach even said it was ok to get personal fouls. I remember one of our linemen being interviewed about some flashy QB in an upcoming game and he said something like "well he hasn't been hit yet, know what I'm sayin".

The 2000 BYU game, Mario walks up to the line, in between the tackles, and holds his hand up. Quarterback looks up, kind of confused. Ball gets snapped, Mario jumps over the line and brings his hand down on the poor guy, grabs him and basically drags him into the carnage. From what I remember it was a fumble. It was the biggest own I think I ever saw. Man, Joe Lee's defenses were fun to watch as long as you had the horses.
