How has Bumphis gotten this reputation of being a threat?

In the post about the wildcat one person mention running the wildcat with Bumphis would be good. He keeps getting listed as a player to watch when you tune in. I haven't seen the speed, strength or vision from him as Berry has shown. I haven't really seen him run away from defenders yet. I don't see anything negative, just I haven't seen anything special.

the fact is, he has three more years to get better.

/I think we do a poor job of getting the ball to him.

I agree, he hasn't shown the quickness or burst that Heavens has to me either, nor the vision and burst that Berry shows on returns.
He's a stronger guy though with better body control, hands, and awareness than them though, making him a more natural WR.
But the talk of him being "the best WR in MSU history" is quite a reach.

Bumphis is a true freshman and is our leading receiver.

Stats : gp no. yards av. TD long Av/G <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" border="0"> <tbody> <tr bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <td align="left"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">Chad Bumphis </font></td> <td align="middle"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">9 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">26 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">290 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">11.2 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">3 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">69 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">32.2</font></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Not Percy Harvin numbers but he is a TRUE FRESHMAN.
As far as Heavens, i am sure he will be a tremendous player for us but thus far he he been far less than impressive. He has fewer catches than all of our running backs except Elliot but even Elliot has better numbers and I don't have to tell anyone how sad that is.

<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" border="0"> <tbody> <tr bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <td align="left"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">Brandon Heavens </font></td> <td align="middle"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">9 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">6 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">30 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">5.0 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">0 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">14 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">3.3 </font></td> </tr> <tr bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <td align="left"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">Robert Elliott </font></td> <td align="middle"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">9 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">3 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">47 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">15.7 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">0 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">18 </font></td> <td align="right"><font face="verdana" color="#000000" size="2">5.2 </font></td> </tr> </tbody> </table>

</p>

And yes I do believe Bumphis will be one of the best in school history and possibly THE best. But it won't happen as a freshman and I don't think anyone expected him to be.</p>

Leon Berry has been impressive. One things that concerns me about him is in relation to returns. Prior to the Georgia Tech game, everytime he received the kick off he ran like a mad man-like he had something to prove. Since returning the TD against GT he just doesn't seem to be attacking with that same since of purpose and drive. Anybody else pick up on that??</p>

To be devil's advocate here, he is leading the team in recieving as a true freshman. With no QB to speak of. Imagine what he can do in the next three years with Russell and/or Newton.

Edit: With his numbers thru 9 games, Bumphis would have been the leading reciever for MSU in 2005 and 2004, just nudging out Will Prosser for the top spot.

I am not saying he won't be great in the future, I just haven't seen something extraordinary.

Also as long as Eric Moulds wore the Maroon and White, it will be hard for someone else to be the "Best" WR at MSU. He did special things every game.

what about Varnado?

I know that's a different sport, but still, expecting greatness out of true freshmen is being petty.

Even Jerious Norwood played behind somebody his freshman year and we weren't sure who would be the starter going forward.

is Mardye McDole. He was as good a college receiver as there was back in his day. Unfortunately, he was trapped playing in Emory Bellard's wishbone offense his JR season, then Bellard created the wingbone for his SR season with McDole as the wingback. At the time Bellard said, "We may not can throw the ball to him, but we can damn sure hand it off to him."

but he has to want it and do things that are going to be required to get there. Also some good coaching.

from VZ today -

<font size="2"><font face="Georgia">Pass/rush balance:
2009: 64.8 percent of plays were rushes
2008: 50.8 percent of plays were rushes

This is worth noting. We run an offense that is so heavily based on the run that it cuts down on his possibilites. Then, our QB doesn't have the abilities to truly open up the passing game. I'm as big of a Lee supporter as any this year because I think he's our best option. But he cannot make some of the throws to run some of the plays and packages to make more players a threat, including Bumphis.

Next year we'll see a vast leap in his stats and play-making. Will he be the best ever? Who knows? Will he be Eric Moulds? I'm not sure that's even a fair comparison. They're two different types of receivers in my mind. Of course, the Bumphis type of receiver wasn't prominent then. Moulds was incredible and will most likely still be considered the best regardless.

I have seen the flashes of speed on several occasions. That kid is special and he will be a force for us by his Sophmore year. He just needs a strong QB to back him up. Being a true freshmen and our leading receiver that has mini-me throwing to him....i think it is impressive. Only time will tell.

That is one of his weak points. but keep in mind, last fall, this kid was playing on Friday nights. Let this College staff put some meat on the bones and he will improve...

If 290 yards would've led our team in 04 and 05, then that's not really a compliment to Bumphis as much as it's an indictment on how bad our offense was in those years.
I'm just judging off of athletic ability alone when thinking about his potential, and it seems to me Heavens and Berry have a little more quickness and burst, that's all.
And saying he could be the best WR in MSU history if you saw Moulds play is very much a reach. There aren't a lot of 5'10" guys that end up being great WR's unless they have uncanny athletic ability like Steve Smith or Santana Moss

When Berry receives the KO, does Bumphis try to block anyone? I haven't really noticed.

Yes. I don't know if the blocking is breaking down or what. But he was hitting holes a full sprint. Now it seems he is anticipating getting hit. If I had time, it would interesting to go back and see if GT or someone else has gotten a big hit on him. I don't recall one though.

so you just feel like he can read a blitz or an option.

I am sure berry or heavens would do just as well, but people know chad did it in tupelo.

Sure, Heavens may be a little quicker, but Bump is no slouch. I think Bumphis has an overlooked skill that is common in all playmakers, especially WR...great body control (in my opinion, this was Justin Jenkins greatest asset). He just has the ability to shift, accelerate, twist and turn and get in the right position to make a play either with the ball in his hands or in a route. Bump is just a playmaker, plain and simple.

The best of all time talk is premature, but you can't blame folks for getting excited about him. He is without doubt the smoothest looking receiver we have had since Jenkins.

he just needs to get stronger in the legs....he will.....and before his career is over, he'll be throwing lots of passes and doing some punting...he will be the most versatile player we've ever had

that Bumphis is a good fit for the wildcat is because he can throw the ball. He didn't play QB very much at Tupelo because they had Garrett. But, I saw Bumphis play QB for Tupelo against Madison Central when Garrett was out with appendicitis. He has a really good arm- trust me on that. Remember the first play of the season against JSU? Bumphis launched it a good 40 yards downfield to Wilder who didn't catch it, but it got there.

.......is completely idiotic. Chad has shown more "flashes" of brilliance in his true freshman season than most senior receivers ever do at MSU. Let's at least wait until his 2nd year and when he hopefully has a real SEC quarterback before we truly judge him.
