Reprising Gene's comment about banning....
_________________________________________________
...here is what Gene said. He locked the thread, and I hope he doesn't mind me copying and posting it again.
"In my opinion professional courtesy should extend to the administrators of all sites first and foremost. But for reasons that to this day have not been explained to me, my username was banned from the Ole Miss Spirit forums over a year and a half ago, maybe longer. And despite being banned, I didn't ban any of the Ole Miss administrators. Truth be known, it was really not that big of a deal to me anyway.
Then, Steve Robertson was banned from the Ole Miss Spirit forums with no reason given to Steve. However, when Steve contacted Chuck (the OM Spirit publisher) he was told that the Ole Miss Spirit subscribers didn't want Steve to have access to their forums. Now, I can handle me being banned because it's no big deal to me, but when they banned Steve Robertson, a highly-regarded member of the Scout.com recruiting team who covers Mississippi recruiting and should have access to all of the Mississippi sites due to his job requirements, in my mind that crossed the line of professionalism and common courtesy, so I banned the administrators (Chuck, Jeff and Yancy) of the Ole Miss Spirit site a few days later. And that's where we stand today: Steve and I are banned from their forums and they are banned from my forums. And really, other than Steve and Yancy who should have access to all Mississippi sites due to their jobs, being banned has no effect on the rest of us. Chuck and Jeff make their living from the OM Spirit and mine comes from Gene's Page.
As for the regular members of Scout.com, I rarely ban anyone. In the last few weeks I have personally banned two people. I do, however, have a moderator that watches these boards and when things seem to be getting out of hand as far as Ole Miss fans coming on here wanting to flame (as happened this past weekend) he will start banning those Ole Miss folks. Sometimes those banishments extend to Ole Miss folks who post very marginal comments or no comments at all. In almost all of those cases he will go back and unban those folks a few days later. Or, if those folks contact me, I usually look at their posting history and make a decision on them. And as you know from personal experience, I unbanned several of them the past two days.
Gene"
For years Gene extended professional courtesy to his premium content pages to the principles and employed staff of the Ole Miss Spirit, which is the Scout service Ole Miss board. When Steve Robertson was banned from the Spirit Premium pages, Gene retaliated and banned Chuck, Jeff and Yancy. As a State fan who was banned from Ole Miss sites for no other reason than being honest and truthful, and not even "flaming" on the opponent's sites, I felt for years that Gene was being "too nice" to the Rebels. To borrow a metaphor from "the Pack," he very literally was being "The Swan."
For several weeks I have been in Duluth, Minnesota, where I lived previously, braving blizzards, near absolute zero temperatures, and being "snowed in," before moving back south. I had very little access to the internet, so missed this string about the banning of fans from differing loyalties. I want to publicly praise Gene for finally stepping up to the plate and letting a little of that fuzz on the top of his head raise up! Gene, I say that you did the right thing Brother Dawg!
These web sites are supposed to be "fair and objective," to borrow a marketing term by Fox Network. Recruiting analysts are supposed to be "fair and objective" in their reporting and, when they talk to them, NOT attempt to influence recruits in any direction. It is an NCAA violation if they do. Yancy Porter does everything he can to sway recruits to Ole Miss. He steals material from Steve Robertson, one of the hardest working recruiting analysts in the business, and sends reports to Ole Miss coaches of information about our coaching visits, our in home visits, and other information which would have been classified back in my military. That, in and of itself, is a major NCAA violation. Yancy even has spies on Steve's Recruiting Page which use fake Bulldog screen names to gather information for their illegal activities. Neither "The Swan," nor Steve, would ever stoop to such tricks. I for one, vote that Yancy, Jeff and Chuck never be given privileges again.
