How long til A&M gets unis like ours that say "Gig Em" on the front

It's sad that this may be a valid question.

that said, I really love the new uniforms. Hope they are here to stay.

Definitely an improvement but agree that it's like having Roll Tide on the front of theirs...just 17ing put "STATE" on there

the whole hail state thing is being jammed down our throats. i feel like a goober saying it and its totally forced. hail state is an out of control marketing gimmick that is really not pulling its weight the way the marketing department wants it to. let it die.

Do you remember Varoom Maroon?

**FIRST POST** Before Hail State, the best thing we had were a hundred puns using the word "dawg" and the most generic phrases in the world: "Go Dawgs!" and "Go State!"... Hail State may overdone to a degree, but to say that it needs to die is ridiculous. It took years of work by students and administrators to finally cement that phrase into the minds of the fanbase, and it's one more way for us to market ourselves to the outside world. #hailstate

look, ive got no problem with having it as our athletic website and loose associations like that, but trying to make that our "war eagle" or "roll tide" simply isnt going to happen. i dont give a **** how long it took to ATTEMPT to cement the phrase, but imo, its failed miserably in that regard. if the fans want to do it, fine, but putting it on jerseys and such is crossing a line. other school phrases are natural, free-flowing, and seem to fit. i feel like ours is that weird baby-thing in total recall. its not natural and, moreover, its clearly an engineered marketing ploy to give us our own catchphrase.

I'm not gonna say it needs to die, but it definitely feels forced. If someone gives me a "Hail State" when I'm not expecting it, like at an airport or something, it is awkward. I usually just respond with "yeah" or "oh ok" or maybe "go dogs." But if somebody hits me with a "go state" or "go dogs" like they have for the majority of my life, I instinctively reciprocate. I realize it's just different words saying the same thing, but it feels weird saying "hail state."

Eta: and it's stupid on the jerseys.

precisely. im never going to give anyone a "hail state" at an airport or while milling about the louvre. its awkward....even more awkward than milling about in the louvre.

I can agree with that. In the right time and place it works, and works well for what we are trying to sell. I don't disagree at all that it is not the most comfortable greeting to yell at a random state fan in Disney World wearing some MSU apparel. In time, that may change. It's really only been used for about 4 years, so it's not that surprising that it's not a common catchphrase yet.

It can definitely be awkward. The southern accents pronouncing "hail" as "hell" don't help much either. Yelling that at someone in a lot of places will get a lot more than a state fan to look at you strange...

to me, its an antiquated word and i feel embarrassed even saying the words out loud even amongst fellow state fans....and i can assume my fellow state friends feel the same way because none of them say it. i could type it no problem, but im going to go with "go dogs" to avoid the awkwardness in the spoken word. the words just seem so hollow. hail state.....hail state what? i just never have really gotten it despite it being in the fight song. it just seems that in trying to get a catch phrase, we reached a bit on selecting one.

Doubt if you'll be seeing anyone giving you a "Hail State" at the louvre.

Agree. Don't care for the Hail State crap. But you will never get everyone one the same page with unis. I liked our unis best the first couple of years under Mullen. Many didn't like them though.

I do think the Hail State is forced on us a bit much, and I definitely think it's overboard on the jerseys.

With that said, I guess my skin is too thick. I've had multiple encounters with folks who have greeted me (and vice Versa) with a Hail State and I've never felt awkward. It's part of our fight song, it's unique and it's unifying. Go Dawgs or Go State is very generic. We may as well say Go Team at that point.

So, what you're saying is...

I like the Hail State phrase in general and am cool with it on the uniform. It can be awkward to yell a la Roll Tide. But I'd feel awkward yelling anything at a stranger. It just depends on how the phrase is used.

Surely someone checked this ^, right??

I'm thinking this is a one-game throwback to the late 90s look, maybe for the Arkansas game. I also am not a fan of Hail State on the jersey. I really like having script there, but would rather have State or even Miss State.

It's fine for the cheerleaders to say

and to be the opening lyric of our fight song. But it's getting annoying to try to make it something more than that. It's completely unnecessary for us to have a catchphrase or a greeting. Maybe it would be different if it had been used that way for 100 years - but to manufacture one during our third century of existence is a bit forceful.

For once, I just want us to not go into geek mode when we make a new uniform. I wished we had just one normal jersey to turn to, but our options seem to be limited to a&m stripes, metalic gold, or phrases that should only be said by cheerleaders.

Couldnt disagree more. Its part of our history as the name of the fight song. I love how the school has embraced it.

i was actually referring to a real-life situation. i was wearing a msu track shirt at the louvre about a decade ago and someone came up to me and started a conversation. i think she thought i was a track athlete because of the randomness of my shirt (i dont look like one, but i guess i could pass as someone on the track team that doesnt require much speed)and some lady's daughter and some of her family attended state and we started talking about it. i was reppin' state all over central and western europe.

maybe we should just go with "tote that ball"....or better yet "old state". that would clear things right up especially for the folks at espn.

"Bell yeah" should be the universal dog greeting. 17 hail state

When I see State folks out somewhere, I usually say, "We've got some dawgs up in here!" That's always been my favorite...and it's always very warmly received and reciprocated.

Yes, it is working. I get it around town and while traveling. Heck, I even got it from the boy who opened our car door at carpool a few weeks back (I have a kid in K5).
I've taken to responding in kind.
