even with traveling back to Starkville Sunday night and then having to travel to Tallahassee midweek, you cant say for sure that we are tired and could have used an extra day or two of rest..

But should we lose tomorrow, you would really have to wonder....

I don't like saying it publicly, because a lot of people don't agree, but I don't like staying in the tournament long, either.<div>
</div><div>I was proud of our team and certainly supported them during it- it was awesome to watch. If we could've hosted a regional from it, I don't blame them for trying. But I was kind of worried it would take an unnecessary toll.</div><div>
</div><div>Watching us today- we looked like crap. I don't see us not compete very much, but we were never in this one. And it looked like we didn't care. I don't think that's the case- I just think we're dead.</div><div>
</div><div>And I hope that's not the case. But there's a reason I don't like playing deep in that thing. Shoot me down for it. Don't care. That's the only time I don't care about winning.</div>

We ended up with a worse draw than what we were projected to have 10 games (and 9 wins) prior.

You always have to try to win. The SEC Tourn. Title is a great moment for this team and for our fans. Hopefully we can come back. I do agree that every winning streak has to be broken somewhere, so losing at Hoover may have got that out of the way. I don't think physical fatigue is a factor, but anybody involved as a coach or player in a winning streak knows that the pressure builds and grows.

One thing about that streak is that it proves we can win several games in a row in a pressure situation. It ain't over yet.

Terrible draw.<div>
</div><div>Still, we looked bad today. Like, not even there. 5 days off isn't as much as it sounds like after all of that. It's HARD to play 6 games in a row after such an up and down season. Mentally and physically, I'm sure we're exhausted. There's no way they aren't. Which is fine- everyone's tired. Still, it's unnecessary to do that.</div><div>
</div><div>We don't look like we usually do. Even in a bad effort- this was really bad. Nobody really looked good. Even Stratton, who mostly had a good game. Yes, he gives up a homer every now and then, but it's very uncharacteristic for him to leave that many out for grabs. And who's calling our pitches- the catcher that just played in every game this season. He's tired- and yes, mentally it does affect him. You can be tough all day, and I applaud him for it. I played the same- usually to my detriment at the end. But yes, it matters.</div><div>
</div><div>I'm just not in favor of the tournament unless it helps us... which, a lot of people were saying up front it more than likely would not, even if we won. There was a very slight chance it wouldn't- but, as most thought, it didn't. </div><div>
</div><div>Very little reward it seems from the get-go. I felt that way from the get-go, and my opinion hasn't changed. I'm very competitive, but again, I'd take losing in that tournament and getting needed rest at the end of the season to prepare for what's important any day.</div>

hard to get reenergized and refocused after coming off a high with a difficult and unexpected SEC tournament championship run. Its easy to say you'll get refocused for a regional but hard to do.

I'm NEVER in favor of telling a kid to lose. It's a tough line to walk. I really don't know how I'd get that across to my team... I guess I'd play the scrubs. <div>
</div><div>I do think physical fatigue can factor in here with some guys (Slauter). And probably our hurt guys. But I feel the mental stuff is pretty big (and I normally put a lot into the mental aspects, more than most). I think it matters more than most think- again, that's just me.</div><div>
</div><div>Not saying I'm pissed at Cohen or anything- I think he did a great job this year. And no matter what, I'm extremely proud of our team. I would hate to lay an egg here after the progress made, though. Seems unfair for all of the work our kids did.</div><div>
</div><div>Samford is good, though, and as much as I hate it for us, I do like an underdog. Lots of credit to them on taking advantage of their strengths and the field. Good game plan.</div>

let Lindgren whomever get us thru 7-8 innings and then see where we stood at that point. We came back and won, and it was great for us. But we went on to play 2 more games and used the hell out of our pitching. And we play the same starters now in the field game after game, and they played in the heat of the day all 6 days.

It can be physically as well as emotionally draining. That was a concern I had and us being flat as hell today hasnt made that concern go away. You cant say for certain the SEC Tourney is why we were flat today- we'll just have to see how our bunch responds tomorrow

the guy hitting a bomb off Stratton, which deflated our guys, followed by our usual shittiness at the plate and then several more bombs. The first onewas a no-doubter, and the rest just snow-balled. But once they had the upper hand (at 1-0), our guys just looked like they were giving up. The more fired up Samford got, the more we curled up in the fetal position.

I also think our failure to show up probably had more to do with our guys celebrating the tourney victory, thinking they were hot **** and that they should be hosting and that they would cruise through the regional, especially with the TV talking heads having us as the trendy pick to go to Omaha. Remember the last time a MSU team was the trendy pick to make it somewhere? I do, and Xavier does too.

But you are right, in that there's really no way to tell for certain. I hope to see some fire tomorrow. And with our pitching depth, you never know. If we can win tomorrow against UAB, then we won't see Samford's #1 or 2 or FSU's ace Sunday. We could still make some noise.

Blaming a loss on previous wins is a losing argument, I don't care how you slice it.

If fatigue is your reasoning, blame the 17ed up SECT format. Stupid to make one of your teams play 6 in 6.
I like the ACC tournament round robin format where no team plays over 4. Not trying to tread jack, just sayin.

I think that's a pretty fair position to hold. Unless they change it, unless we get byes, I don't like going that deep.

The old format would have made us play 6 games in 5 days. This is actually an improvement over the old format. I do agree we should go to a format that limits games more, but theold one was worse than the new one. I'd like to see either a 14-team single elimination tournament or a 12-team tourmament broken down into 4brackets. Everyone plays 2 games and the 4 bracket winners advance to a single elimination semi-final and final. If a bracket ties witheveryone at 1-1, go with run differential (max 10 per game) and if they're all 3 still tied just let the top seed advance.

Polk credited the last Omaha run partly because we'd gotten out of that thing so early.<div>
</div><div>If the tournament were limited, as you said, I'd be more in favor. As of now though, unless you just have to do it to get in, I don't see a lot of great things that come from doing well in it. More cons than pros to me. JMO. Always different ideas, and none are necessarily wrong, but I just don't see the great points of it.

Don't give the baseball team a pass.

If this were basketball, and we lost the first game of the NCAA tourney, you would be all over
"poor preparation", "bad coaching" etc. You wouldn't give any credence at all to "fatigue" from the
sec tournament.

Bad games happen, regardless of sport, but hold coaches to the same standards. We didn't
seem prepared, and we sure didn't hit well, and we lost to a lower seeded team. Folks
should have given a lot more credit to Samford, they did a hell of a job.

As a reminder, there were numerous threads earlier this week about how we should pitch our #2
today, and save Stratton for FSU. Stratton gave up -3- HRs.

**** happens, and it's a small field, but that being said.. we were just shut out by their #2 pitcher.
And last I checked, the field was the same size for both teams.
