Answer: 132. That's right, 132. 68 in the NCAA. 32 in the NIT. And there are two other post-season tournaments with 16 teams each. I'm sorry for being a curmudgeon, but 132 is just a little too many, and by "a little" I mean "a lot."

I'm sorry to say that I think this has all just gotten too big. The regular season gets longer and longer. There is the conference tournament and now for anyone remotely decent there is the post-season tournament. I can't help but wonder how many of these guys are actually getting a, you know, education, especially since when you're 18 to 22 and people are kissing your rear because you're good at basketball you probably don't care about education.

Assuming they're going to not get rid of college sports altogether, I think they should just de-couple it from education. Don't make the players go to school. Give them some money. And maybe give them some lifetime education credits too so when they get to be 25 and they realize maybe getting an education is valuable they can go back to school when they're serious.

I say that for the revenue sports. For the non-revenue sports, really, what's the point? I know some people like them but why are we paying people to play sports in college when few people are particularly interested in the sport? Why is education and sports so bound up anyway? It's not this way in other countries. I know I'm an outlier on this issue but I am what I am.

remember when ONLY conference champions got in the dance?.... of course there are about 20 times as many "conferences" than there used to be

no. I don't think it has ever been that way. Back when it was 16 teams, there were only about 10 conferences and there were a lot more independents.
there was one year where Maryland had a super team and lost in the acc tournament and stayed home...back in the 70's I think

There are 351 Division 1 mens teams and 349 womens teams. That is 700. It looks like they play close to 35 games on average. 700 x 35 is 24,500. And there are two teams in each game so that's 12,250.

The games are about 2 hours each so that's 24,500 hours. There are 8,760 hours in a year. So there are enough Division 1 basketball games such that there could be almost three of them going non-stop for every hour of the year. And that's just Division 1.

ETA: Or, when you consider the fact that the actual playing time of a college basketball game is 40 minutes, or one-third of 2 hours, there are about as many minutes of Division 1 basketball live action in a year as there are minutes in a year.

Yes, there was a time when that would happen. But it wasn't just conf champions making the NCAA. But back then, the NIT was a very important tournament as well.

I think 48 is a good number for the NCAA and 24 for the NIT and screw these other tournaments....make the post season worth something again

There are 700 Division 1 college basketball teams. 700 is almost as many electoral votes as Donald Trump got in the election.

There are 435 + 100 = 535 members of the US Congress.

So there are 1.3 Division 1 college basketball teams for every member of Congress.

it is worth something, imo.

I like it at 68. I disagree how the committee sets the seedings. Other than that, I love March madness.

or maybe have another division like football used to like 1-AA...I like the tournament too....I'd just like to see the big boys go head to head from day 1

the best thing would be to put 128 in the NCAA...

the 64 first-round losers go to the NIT...

What would really make for exciting game viewing would be if the 64 first-round losers got the death penalty. Then you'd see some real hustle on the court.

It was like that back in the day you are speaking about. Then money got so great and the NCAA made it possible for schools to join Div 1 for bball and not other sports, we got where we are today. I'm sorry but must disagree again. The Cinderalla's are part of the attractiveness and excitement of what it is today. Hell, I loved the Mt St Mary's vs New Orleans game last night. Not only was it good basketball but it had a ton of drama and side stories with the player on teammate choke hole on the neck.

No, I meant that actual death penalty. It was a (bad) joke.
If you want another stupid suggestion, allow all teams to participate in post-season tourney with single elimination. All post season gate kept in a winner-take all. Somebody would have enough $ to give free education to the student body. Other programs would quickly go broke and the sport would eliminate itself. Was that not the intent of OP?
